orcs, wizards, sword n board, medieval setting, these were the starting points and the stable of the rpg genre. However, considering D&D was mostly brought forth by a couple of white dudes with a biased toward european influences, I wonder if the genre has not went beyond its usual stables due to both comfortability and lack of creativity. For instance, the Japanese took the formula of D&D derivatives like waizardy and have followed this formula ever since. A strategic battle centric system with a party likely set in a european like setting. And if not european, it houses the same stables of sword and magic classes, but in a different time. Instance, using a sword despite guns being largely superior. Or games like xenosaga and xenogears.

My question mainly is: can this system go any differently? Is it even possible? Or we stuck to the concepts of classes, sword and magic, objective decision systems? D20, rifts, and many other rp games exist, but they also stem from one place. Basically, if D&D was never made, how different would history be? And would something entirely different would have come instead?

D&D was largely based of wargames and stuf that already existed. Someone would of done something similar sooner or later.
>>
>>47170276
Makes me curious what that something would have been. If it would have even been the same circle of traits.
>>
I agree with >>47170276, but depending on what they do the changes would have quite an effect on video games and subsequent tabletop games. I'm more of a vidya guy, so if someone were to even do a different magic system as opposed to the standard "spells per day" the balance of said games and similar titles in vidya. And let's say that things weren't based off European fantasy, then something more prominent would take it's place obviously.

The thing is really that if someone did a different D&D thing, then everything afterwards would be impacted since there was nothing quite like it, and early computer rpgs were based off of D&D as we see it today.

Guys I have a dilemma.

Me and a group of my buddies are gearing up to play a new campaign soon. I'm gonna be DM. No problems there.

The big problem comes I when a buddy moving in from out of state is planning on joining too. He's kind of "that guy" but that's exactly not the bad part. The bad part is he's recently married to a sweet but incredibly dumb girl and she wants to play as well.

I have no experience playing with a couple at the table. I have a really bad feeling about this. Is that warranted? How do I proceed?

Play it by ear, see what characters they roll up. I'm dming a weird western/call of cthulu/pathfinder game where one of my players is a 10 year old who likes to curb stomp folks and it's been going ok

Sounds strange af. We are just playing a Star Wars rpg.

Do you have any experience with couples in games?
>>
Only as a player, but it was never really a problem. The characters weren't related and didn't pursue romantic ties with anything, which is usually where things get weird.

I'm doing a campaign focused on a space station soon so I'm looking for stuff like interiors of space stations or ships. But I will also appreciate space characters, preferably human and pulp sci-fi is not frowned upon if you have it. I'll dump what I have to help anyone else looking for space stuff.

Say a large alien fleet arrived at earth and just started killing everything it could.

About how long would it take for the military to respond and start fighting back?

Depends on how quickly they get the info, but you're looking at at least 15 minutes to scramble jet fighters

In an optimal situation, I'd say 20-30 minutes to get solid confirmation to send in planes and for the to fly there.
>>
>>47168664

So fighters would be able to scramble pretty quickly. What about ground forces?
>>
>>47168697
Depends on the location a lot more. They'd need to be near a military base, but even then you're probably looking at a timescale of hours.

Some things could be brought in with transport helicopters and planes, though not as speedily as jets. I'd estimate roughly 1 hour for the first troop transports to start flying in, with a slow flow after that as more bases get notified and have their troops arrive.

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying
>The Good
Fast, story-driven, the dice pool system and how it's used is interesting to me.
It handles mobs correctly, and the fate point equivalents aren't always an 'I win' button.
Superpowers are handled in a way that remains true to their roots.
Low-powered heroes that play smart can completely wreck an unsuspecting high-power super with the opportunity system.
>The Bad
Nobody plays it.
Character creation and creating even a semblance of balance can be a headache.
Fights are generally curbstomps one way or the other, don't take long enough.
The dice pool system is apparently incomprehensible to d20 players.
>The Worst
Creating a Marvel super hero is just plain asking for special snowflake bait.
>>
Strike!
>Why is it good?
It strips away all the things I don't give a shit about and leaves me with a nice little system that can be used for most of the games I'd like to run/play.
>Why is it bad?
It strips away a bit too much. Some can't deal with the freedom. The book layout is kinda shit.
>What is the absolute worst thing about it?
Can't find a group IRL to play and playing over maptools ain't the same (nor do I have as much willingness or time for that).

GURPS
>Good
It lets me do everything to my liking. Especially as a DM.
>Bad
Lots and lots of work as a DM.
>the worst
It doesn't actually let me do everything to my liking. See Supers and vehicles. Also high point games make me want to gouge my eyes out with a melon baller.

At what point does a fistful of normal d6s of about 16mm become bothersome to roll?

I'm working on a little pet project that involves the use of dice pools to resolve conflicts. You roll your fist of dice, and count those above a certain value as successes. Your opponent's/defenders successes are subtracted from yours. Any number of remaining successes are good for you, but hitting odd numbers of successes other than 1 confers increasingly powerful 'crits'.

If you're trying to reach that first level of crits with a 50/50 chance of success (target 4) and no opposition, you'll already want to roll at least six dice. If you want to improve your chances or account for an opponent, the number of dice is probably going to explode.

Would this turn you off a game?

I don't care because I only play this kind of game on a computer, and unless you seriously plan on distributing your game in print it's not a huge concern.
But still, more than 10 dice at once is annoying.

Size matters, ladies.

I have large hands and lots, so I can roll around 30 dice without trouble. My younger brother has small lady hands, so he can barely manage 9 or 10.

>>
>>47167549
They're combat systems and not really much good for anything else. It's debateable how good later versions are for anything except combat, but they at least give it a C- effort.
>>
>>47167725
How exactly do you mean? I assume they still have non-combat abilities to some extent (perception, deception and all that)?

>Colonels Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui argued that war was no longer about “using armed forces to compel the enemy to submit to one’s will” in the classic Clausewitzian sense. Rather, they asserted that war had evolved to “using all means, including armed force or non-armed force, military and non-military, and lethal and non-lethal means to compel the enemy to accept one’s interests.” The barrier between soldiers and civilians would fundamentally be erased, because the battle would be everywhere. The number of new battlefields would be “virtually infinite,” and could include environmental warfare, financial warfare, trade warfare, cultural warfare, and legal warfare, to name just a few. They wrote of assassinating financial speculators to safeguard a nation’s financial security, setting up slush funds to influence opponents’ legislatures and governments, and buying controlling shares of stocks to convert an adversary’s major television and newspapers outlets into tools of media warfare. According to the editor’s note, Qiao argued in a subsequent interview that “the first rule of unrestricted warfare is that there are no rules, with nothing forbidden.” That vision clearly transcends any traditional notions of war.

What might a strategy game based on unrestricted warfare look like?

>>
A race to destroy the enemy's civilian population and production centers in order to severely cripple their ability to respond, or sustain the war.
>>
For a start, there is no map. Geography becomes a lesser detail when you are fighting a battle on every conceivable front.

There will be charts, many of them, for the various forms of attack and their impact on the target.

The main resources would be money, time, agents, and armies. To cause a desired outcome, for example disrupting the target's hydroelectic power supply, you could chose to spend Money (bribe the right people to cause an 'accident'), agents (infiltrate the body who owns the dam to gain access) or armies (stage a 'terrorist bombing'). The cost would vary, and depending on how the target choses to use their resources determines the risk of failure/detection.

I just finished this. Did Perturabo really go traitor just because he didn't have any friends? Why would he even want to be a Daemon? Also, how the hell did Fabius get off the Sisyheum? He gets stabbed, collapses between a dreadnought and two loyalists, and somehow escapes in the next five minutes without anyone noticing.

B) it's Fabulous Bile, what did you expect?
C) it's Black Library writing, what did you expect?
>>
Why couldn't we have one traitor primarch who stays uncorrupted and partially sane, who just feels betrayed and bitter?

>Spooky Batman doesn't count.
>>
>>47167350
>Did he go Traitor because he didn't have any friends?
Not quite. He went traitor because he was disatisifed with the way things were going and was offered the chance to finally be appreciated for what he could do. However, Pert himself pads it out when talking with Fulgrim. Things rarely come to expectation. He only continued through with things because he swore to Horus, and Pert was BIG on personal codes. He even is surprised that Fulgrim did not have to swear to Horus.

He thought he had a chance to fix shit and maybe get a lil' credit, but he got fucked over.

During the next session, I intend to prepare the following scene for my PCs: As they travel the road, they spot a trio of red dragons torturing someone. It's a goblin and three young red dragons are slowly spitting lava on him and killing him.

The idea is for three dragons to be:
- teen-age-ish retarded
- stronger then PCs

Basically I want to explain to players: Dragons r evil.

thoughts?
