It's the middle of the 21st century, after an economic collapse leaves much of the country in lawless state, similar to the wild west. Times are hard and my character's father has to work as a drug courier for a criminal gang in order to put food on the table. Shit goes bad on a deal and gunfire is exchanged after an inside man tries to help the buyer steal the drugs. Father is wounded but escapes and goes to ground, not knowing who to trust. Criminal gang thinks he is a turncoat as well and decides to execute his family in retribution. He's half a step ahead of them and is trying to get his family to safety when the hitmen show up. Everybody dies except my character, who is out scrounging for scrap with her friends.
When she learns what happened she flees town and earns enough money to survive giving tug jobs in the backroom of a bar. She knifes a guy when he isn't satisfied with a tug job and tries to force himself on her. She's beaten for the offense, but the boss is impressed with her ability to handle herself and to take punishment. He ends up using her in various criminal operations. At first it's non-confrontational stuff, but by the time she's twenty, she's a full blown enforcer.
She dedicates as much of her free time as possible to becoming as deadly as possible. Physically speaking, she's nothing special, but her determination is 11 on a 10-scale, and once she puts her mind to something, she will not stop until she's achieved her goal. Her desire for revenge carries her through the hard times, and after a few more years, she decides she's ready to go, but the boss refuses to let her leave, and has her beaten again when she refuses to cooperate. So once she's sufficiently recuperated, she walks into his office and lets him have both barrels of her shotgun. She shoots her way out in the ensuing chaos, and she escapes town, joining travelers going to the city where her family was killed (the party).

Gamescience dice have sharp edges compared to rounded edges other dice such as chessex. They do not rock tumble them so there's an imperfection from where they cut it from the sprue sticking out.

You want to know the best method for learning how to run a game? mYou pick up the GURPS books about the genre you like. Not the core book, just the splats. And you read those, skipping over the 10-15 pages of rules. Because GURPS splats concentrate on "how to run this genre, with sidebars on genre mixing and GM hints and suggestions". You can never go wrong reading a GURPS splatbook for ideas and information on how to run good games of any sort.

How long will it take WotC to realize that magic cannot be balanced against not-magic? Magic is a gamechanger. When trying to balance them, you're effectively trying to balance a WW2 machine gunner and a Roman legionaire: no matter how big you make his shield and many pila you give him, the machine gunner only needs a few rounds to kill him. Hell, often just one bullet will do the trick.
Personally I believe that for the inevitable 6th edition, all martials should simply be made gishes, with superficial and highly specialized knowledge of magic compared to the full casters.

Let's say for sake of argument you are trapped in another dimension with very rare and unreliable access to tools and new materials- you and the other people there pool your knowledge and skills and start making firearms, similar to a ww1 or 2 era rifles, shotguns and pistols out of scrap metal and other materials, with engines and automation only being able to mass produce cartridges and shells; meaning most of these weapons must be made and maintained by hand.
Roughly how expensive would these weapons be if you wanted to buy one in this fictional world? As in purchasing...

Once a few people could make a few reliable guns repeatedly, gunsmiths would be some of the richest craftsmen around. (assuming that there were people who could afford to buy them)
rifles of that era would be too difficult and expensive to manufacture, difficult and expensive to maintain, and producing ammunition would be difficult and expensive. It would be inordinately expensive and such a weapon would be far too valuable to ever see use in battle.
such a weapon would also be rather fragile and prone to mis-fires. While misfires are much rarer in modern day firearms, even they wear out after heavy user. A hand made weapon without modern tooling would wear out very quickly.
muskets would be much easier, especially with very simple firing...
