When the party comes across a locked door, the first course of action (or close to it, I don't know how paranoid your group is with traps) is for the one or two PCs who know how to pick locks to roll for that.
If they try and fail, do you then have *everyone else* roll to pick the lock just in case they get incredibly lucky? That doesn't really make sense to me, yet it's usually better than not trying.
Either you know what you're doing or you don't, and if the untrained PC just happens to succeed it's hard to explain without making a fool of the very trained one.
Are there any tabletop RPGs where a party out of combat is treated as a single character for pass-or-fail rolls like that?

You could just say "You've failed to pick the lock, and it's now jammed/broken/stuck."

You're the GM, you can rule it however you want and give them as many or as little tries as you see fit.
>>
>>47662970
Only have the PCs roll if they're under some kind of pressure or there's consequences for failing.
>>
>>47663013
I want to have a discussion about hard rules and potentially find alternative rule systems. I don't care about GM fiat. It's a useless answer that can apply to everything.

>>47663028
There is a consequence for failing. They can't open the door that way.

Let us break Fate 2's Exceptional Luck and show just how badly it and Fate's entire "hex"/"boon" subsystem need to be revised by the upcoming errata and/or FAQ. We can use it to gain tremendous bonuses to important rolls as a reflexive action, costing 0 Mana and 0 Willpower.

According to DaveB in recent /tg/ threads:
1. Fate 1's Quantum Flux should not work on spellcasting: >>47571191

2. Fate 2's Exceptional Luck costs Mana in order for it to grant a bonus beyond +5: >>47579868

3. If you are casting magic under time constraints and/or pressure and fail, you take a cumulative -1 penalty on subsequent attempts. If you are under neither time constraints nor pressure, you must use the "down and dirty spellcasting" rules, which prevents you from using Yantra bonuses or spell factors: >>47572307, >>47571978, >>47572307, and >>47578204

Page 111 of Mage 2e says, "The penalties to spellcasting can exceed the normal –5 penalty cap to dice pools. In cases where the penalty would reduce the dice pool beyond 0 — and thereby a chance die — by an additional –5 even after including bonuses from Yantras, the spell is too complex for the mage to cast and it automatically fails." This should not be an issue if the final pool is -5.

As per page 115, an exceptional success on a spellcasting roll can recharge 1 Willpower, refund all Mana spent on the spell, and regain 1 Mana on top of that.

The rule concerning spell stacking in page 118 concerns "multiple spells [affecting] the same aspect of the character," which does not prevent a single spell from buffing the dice pool for the same spell about to be recast.

Page 119 tells us that "a mage can draw upon one Yantra as a reflexive action when casting a spell."

We talk about our LGS. What do you like/what do you dislike?
I'll start

I like-
> Huge selection of every card game
> MTG scene is very competitive, but not douchey and pretentious
> There's an open copy or every board game on sale for you to test play

I dislike-
> Only 3 workers opposed to the 90+ people in the shop every Friday night
> Play area is cramped
> Bathroom is always disgusting

"You owe me" "Big Sis"'s voice hisses in the back of my head, a sharp almost painful whistle "don't forget that you're in my debt"

She isn't even here, but it sounds like she is. But that's just my imagination, I hope. Don't know why I'm worrying about my little bargain with her right now of all times, I mean it's the perfect night, nice and warm and peaceful. Sighing, I lean back against the top of the castle, resting my head on my arms as my wings spread out over the old, faintly blood smelling stones all covered in nothing, not even dust.

The fly up here was really something, but now that I'm up here, laying between spires, It's...well I'm bored, there's nothing interesting or even neat up here.

Just a bunch of rocks, reminds me of the walls outside of the farm. I growl, and stand up, nearly throwing myself off of the edge from how quickly I stood. A warm wind breeze washes against my face, gently wrapping around me as I stare down at the statue of Maria outside of the front of the castle.

Dad always said monsters were monsters, and that was the end of it...funny that all of the ones I've met have been more human than he was. Besides, never felt more alive like this, don't know what he had against them anyways...or why he was always so angry about them all the time.

Good thing I never listened to him about any of that

And I'm having fun like this, being a familiar is much more exciting than digging potatoes out of the ground. A grin slowly breaks onto my lips, my wings unfurling as my heart starts to crave a little excitement. I mean...Iris isn't awake yet anyways, and sure watching the sun fall behind the forest and city from up here is pretty...pretty, but. But I need something more, blood pumping, more...

I don't know really, just exciting. Probably need to fill my belly with more sin anyways. I slowly put my foot over the edge.

I mean, sure the scraps of it round the castle have been holding me off pretty well. But I just...it just doesn't feel the same, and I get a little stronger everytime I do this anyways. And that makes Iris happy, which keeps me happy...among other things.

Besides, I might meet Big sis out there, and see if she's been messing around in my head. Don't know if demons could do that, but since the book talks in my head, and everything about that guy in the hat...well I'm pretty sure they can now that I think about it.

Still, she seemed pretty nice, besides when I...messed up in the graveyard.I frown, nearly crying just remembering it, before my boredom and hunger for excitement and other stuff washes over it like a tidal wave.

and I throw myself off the roof, giggling happily as I feel the air rush past me, pushing my hair back as my skin catches the light and makes me turn into various shades of reds and purples, before I lift up, and they cool down and slowly flow into other colors and hues.

Barely missed erasing my face on the ground that time. I laugh and try to land on the gate, and end up having to scramble to stop myself from falling off of it.

I give up trying to sit ontop of it, and just hang from it with my four arms, looking out at the glowing city...I'm actually surprised people are still around and about this late...shouldn't they be asleep by now?

Ah who cares, that just means I don't have to break into someone's house again.

What do I do?
[] Walk through the streets for awhile, staring at the lights
[] Visit the sirens
[]Go annoy the ice demon
[]Follow my nose and look for some lust 1d20+ senses
[]try to figure out how big sis opened that weird door 1d20+potential
[] Try and come up with a cunning plot to get lots of tasty sin.
[] Go to the nastier part of town dad said to stay away from the few times he took us into the city.
[] Fly out of the city walls, to the farms and forests outside of it

So Chaotic Good vs Lawful Neutral right?
57 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
>>47664577
Basically. Javert is unquestionably Lawful Neutral (perhaps leaning Good, but not quite getting there).

Valjean actually starts Chaotic Neutral (he's only doing what he does to help his family, and then himself, neither of which are Good innately traits). It's only after he both decides to adopt and protect Fantine's child as well as stepping up and admitting him being Prisoner 24601 rather than letting an innocent man go to jail that he really completes the shift to Chaotic Good.
>>
>>47664577
The Friends of the ABC are all Chaotic Good, by the way, while Monsieur and Madame Thénardier are Neutral Evil, perhaps even Chaotic Evil.

Everyone else is some shade of Neutral since they are primarily motivated by personal goals (Éponine joining the Friends to try and get Marius' attention, for example) rather than any kind of greater goal.

The movie wasn't bad. My sole complaint is that I didn't see Javert on the barricade at the end; it's my understanding that he's traditionally supposed to be front and center right next to or at least near to Valjean.
>>
>>47664932
I'd say Valjean shifted to good earlier. He did lift that cart and probably did all sorts of minor acts of goodness during the timeskip.

Your deck and musclewizardry will usually be themed around a major and a dayjob somehow. So you could spit boiling fryer oil at people if you're in food service or hear peoples' pulses at a distance if you're going for medical assistant.
