So, I'm confused about guns in the mid to late 1800's. So, we have powder and shot guns and rifles, and everybody is using them. Then, cartridges pop in in the 50's and... powder and shot firearms keep being produced? For decades!? What the hell happened? Was the industry resisting change?
I mean, i understand the military going "holy shit, we don't want to replace our 50 million muskets! Shit's expensive!", but what about everyone else? Did powder and shot firearms become inexpensive in the wake of new technology, so you had every cheapass with one? I mean, why would any company produce a brand new model cap and ball revolver when they could as easily produce a new cartridge loaded revolver? Was there a huge demand for them?
>>47621803
Not sure if /his/ or /k/...
>>47621831
It's for my mid 1800's game. I don't think either of those boards will be able to answer the follow up gaming questions. Like, would there be a mechanical advantage to players using cap and ball weapons? would they even be cheaper?
It seems to me like powder and ball firearms in this era might end up being trash loot for PCs...
>>47621803
They didn't have mass production back then, you know. Each rifle was hand made. It took about 2 days on average for a rifle to get made. ball and powder was also easily replaceable - you had to either buy really expensive cartridges, or make them yourself, and that was not easy stuff to do.
It took an industrial Revelation for that shit to be made cheap.

reposting from last thread:
I read some of lovecrafts works and I loved them, I also like this concept about madness letting one see things others normally can't, So I was thinking that for one character I am playing, on a non CoC campaing, he slowly starts going insane, at first hearing whispers he dismisses, then starts being paranoid about a lot of things, things get worse and worse, his dreams are not even nightmares, but a collection of random events, ranging from historical events, everyday situations to cryptic messages and or warnings, easiest way to visualize it: someone took a bunch of film rheels, cut them then mixed them into one big mess.
The character looks like it may never recover, then next day, he's calm and happy, as if every single one of his problems was magically solved overnight. Friends assume their help worked wonders, but in reality, the character realised insanity was a good thing, but at the same time, it was not for everyone.
Now the idea may sound stupid I know, but how would I expand on the last point, the whole "is still insane, but doesn't show it, character does best to pretend he recovered sanity"

Stompy has edged out Mono U Delver as the most popular deck on MTGO. Get wrecked Delver.
(It's only by one more deck in the meta, but Delver has been king for a long time... and it doesn't take into account UB Delver which is objectively worse than Mono U)

If you don't already have some homebrew version with friends, follow the MTGO card pool and banlist (and please spread this to your friends that start playing with you). Currently the only place Pauper is officially supported by Wizards is online, and they have a card pool and banlist, therefore that is the format we should be using offline on paper as well, since decks and cards can transfer to games between each other with no confusion.

The bottom left has a box, select MTGO Pauper, all cards in the card pool and banlist are taken into account.

If you have no local paper competition, but want to play a vast amount of Pauper, it can't be beat, even if it is a clunky GUI, you learn quickly.
Some good decks for newbies include but are not limited to:
>Burn
>Elves
>Goblins
>Stompy
>Slivers
>Affinity
>Mono U control
>UB Teachings

This is what happens when WotC doesn't regularly ban cards to force a meta change, the meta evolves on its own. I'm all for banning stupid cards, but to force a meta change? Nah son.
Green is going to be super popular with Mongoose and now Stompy being the confirmed king Delver killer.

What army can take the most power/force weapons?
Bonus points if it's actually viable on the table for that army to do so.
>>47646566

Well Grey Knights of course. Every model basically sports some kind of force weapon.
What are the evil aspects of white, green, red and blue and the good aspects of black?
>white
Totalitarianism, racism, fascism
>green
The weak are meat for the strong to eat
>red
Anarchy
>blue
Progress devoid of morality
>black
Every noir detective, or the entirety of Watchmen
White is controlling. Green thrives on purging the week. Blue will do anything in the pursuit of knowledge. Red can be overly chaotic and impulsive. Black isn't afraid to do anything to win.
>>47646349
Black can also do the "Sacred Darkness" thing and put the living dead back to calmness.
If JRPGs are based on western games and the classes are taken from DnD etc why are druids usually left out?
>>47620698
Figure it has something to do with Shintoism. If there are spirits for just about everything, the spirits of the forest and nature would just fall under that same category and role that deals with them
>>47620698
Japan favors Shintoism, which is somewhat animistic, and naturally respects nature and the natural world in that religion.
Their Clerics are already druids, and most examples of ascetics that live in the natural world to draw inspiration and power from it wind up looking like Martial Artists instead of Religious Magicians.
Western druidism was viewed as contrasting to clerics and such because of the association with christianity and the like vs pagan faiths the likes of which were native to Europe before the church started getting too big for the roman empires.
Or I dunno, maybe they have another name for tree-hugging animal loving eco terrorists and aren't fond of the notion because ass-hats like that keep getting in the way of their whaling industry.
I'm sure someone can do better guesswork than this though.
>>47620698
The reasons for this are actually usually more mechanical then thematic.
"Pet" Druids wouldn't work to well in older JRPG's where party composition and encounter balance was based off a set number of PC's in the party, usually 3 or 4. And since Summoners were usually their own thing in Final Fantasy, that left that role out as well.
Healing and buffing Druids is the other role they could play, but that role is traditionally taken by Priest and White Mage types; the more "nature" magic that is utilitarian in nature again runs into simple mechanical limitations in early JRPG's.
Finally, it must be said that Final Fantasy is a ridiculously heavy influence on JRPG's the way Super Mario Brothers is an influence in side-scrolling and platform games and Street Fighter is on fighting games.
Though different classes of sorts were used in Final Fantasy games, they never really included a Druid-style class for the mentioned mechanical reasons.
You'll note lots of MMO-style JRPG's tend to heavily make usage of classes with similar or near-identical names to traditional Final Fantasy classes for example.

Previously on Tundra civ:
The second World War is ongoing for over a year and a half now. Casualties are in the millions as the world's nations fight not against each other, but against men of evil intent - the Spirelords - and their vast metal armies. In the greatest and bloodiest battle that history has known millions of men fought to defend the city of Victory and the Vault underneath it, ultimately achieving success. Consecutive successful counter-offensives led to our forcces recapturing all territories on the continents of Aymsland, Veita and Ocras, but now the enemy has taken the initiative. They've assembled massive armies in Eyerdar and have been gaining ground on all fronts.
It is the final days of summer of 1197 After the Exile.
Pre-war stats:
>Population:187 000 000 (79% white, 14 % chink,2%hibibi, 3% darkskin,2% pacharnati)
>Colonials: 28 800 000 Eyerdar 16 200 000 Veita 16 200 000 Ocras
Most of our forces have been occupied on other fronts and the defence of Eyerdar has fallen to our allies and the local militias. The Spirelords have unleashed new automatons, walkers and a mighty doomship from their main base of operations in the former NPU. Many of the disgruntled citizens of that nation - the first to fall due to its disarmament after the Great War - have willingly submitted to the Spirelords and the strongest among them have joined the ranks of their army as humans clad in armor, leading the machines that are being built.
In a short period of time the enemy has crushed all resistance ahead of them and taken a lot of territory. They began by destroying the great city of New Millport and their advance has since then continued ever eastward. They've built smaller, more mobile warfleets and are also using submarines to disrupt transportation across the world's oceans.
With the other fronts taken care of, we must direct our attention to Eyerdar now. Propose a plan of action - currently most of our troops are deployed in Ocras, recovering from the high casualties they suffered in Operation Dustwater.

We've got to lure in the doom ship and seize it!
To do so i propose we lure it on the coast where we will have support from our fleet.
We will use a trjan horse of sort, an inflatable false doomship or so but with a wooden frame.
when the shit will be lure in, we will proceed to fire a nuke above it so that it will disable the shield and lot of electronics due to the EMP as well as giving it downward momuntum and therefore forcing it to crash.
We will then use very competent fighting force to board the doomship and eleminate any resistance while our mechnized infantry deal with the troops they deployed after the crash.
also need an operation name give me your ideas!

FAQ:
>What the fuck is this?
Somewhat a campaign of crack-infused free-form roleplay in the grim darkness of the far future.
>When do you guys make these threads?
Usually mondays at 4PM GMT, but they sometimes extend to Tuesdays if we got caught in the middle of something when the thread died and it was too late to make another one the same day.
>Can I join in?
Sure, just think of a character and have fun, you can find most info in 1d4chan albeit it's ussually a little bit out of date in comparison to where the threads are.
>Is there any requirement in character creation.
Not really, we've had Xeno infiltrators, Chaos infiltrators, Villains, Heroes, Normal Guardsmen, Crazed Guardsmen, Assassins, Psykers, Space Marines, Inquisitors, Squats... just think whathever and join the fun.
>Is it allowed to have more than a single character?
Yes as long as you don't use it to powerplay.
>So how you guys do the playan'?
We tend to use spoilers for OOC chat, but nothing is set in stone.
We tend to use greentexts for describing a character's actions, but again nothing is set in stone.
Use d20s for combat checks and d100s for other things you want to roll, higher Is better.
It's important to know that the regiment is now in the employ of a radical Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, with influence from an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and under the watch of an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor. Yes we've been through a lot of shit.
are we still on the spess hulk?

Which system is better for beginners: Pathfinder or 5E?
Gonna be running a game for a group most of whom have never played tabletop before.
>>47641274
Neither.
Give them an easier entry into the hobby with Risus, Everyone Is John, or a D&D Basic retroclone.
Between the two 5E. 5E is also the most newby friendly D&D edition.
5e.

What the fuck were they thinking?

Blue is actually terrible by itself. Mono-blue cant do jack shit about most things once they hit the field. It's the support color.

They weren't early on, and by the time they started thinking it was already 'defined' so they were screwed. If they decided to give, I dunno, fucking green draw or bounce, people would throw a fit.

From media, rather than those made for roleplaying games.
From books, television shows, movies, video games, whatever.
So Pathfinder has some issues. It's pretty well established and has been discussed to death and I don't think this is groundbreaking news or anything.
But one thing I noticed whenever the problems inherent in Pathfinder(DnD as well) is that systems suggested as alternatives are usually shot down or comments are made like 'well at least its not as broken as system x'. My question is is Pathfinder a bad game or is it a bad game even relative to other games? Are there systems that do what pathfinder does that aren't as broken?
>>47633512
i am on the same boat ma friend
First of all it is important to remember that just because /tg/ says that a game sucks does not always mean that /tg/ hates the game. If the people on /tg/ refused to play any of the games that they said sucked, then they would never play an RPG again. As for your question, pathfinder, like a lot of games, becomes grossly unbalanced as soon as some asshole attempts to exploit the system or optimize. As long as you are playing in a good group, it should not be a major problem. Also, there are plenty of other games that are unbalanced like pathfinder, but since pathfinder is the most succeseful, that is the one people talk about.
It's not a bad game. It's just that it triggers three anons who need to shitpost about it at every available opportunity.
Just ignore them.
Hey /tg/, so what are some ways to make it so automatic guns co-exist with melee weaponary, in the same setting, in the same place and in the same battles?
Basically, I'm looking for good story explanations for why swords are still used even though things like rifles and machine guns exist.
>>47632672

>Not buffing swords
RULES OF NATURE
Same reason fighters exist when you could be a Wizard
Guns are DISHONARABRU.
Any suggestions for fantasy systems where the PCs aren't superheroes like in D&D?
(my dad suggested RuneQuest but he's from the 80s)
>>47632119
Why would you want to do that? Fantasy games are all about being the big hero guys, aren't they? Why would you want to be a dirt farmer?
It's be like running a game of V:tM, but no one gets to be a vampire. They have to be Dave the accountant.
>>47632161
No, they can be heroes. But I'd rather the players had to work to separate themselves from the group, not just be able to easily beat almost every non-magical stock NPC in the MM from level 1. To me, the players should start out marginally above average and become competent and experienced by the end of the campaign, not start out as Spider-Man and end up as God.
>>47632119
Listen to your father.
