Can someone explain to me why the UESRPG combat system is so damn over complicated. The fucking thing expects me to figure out the fucking Da Vinci to make a roll.

It's based on Runequest, right?
>>

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Runequest based, which would be OP's problem. RQ appeals to a certain type of autist, and OP isn't one.

How do I learn to roleplay? Specifically, how do I get into a character's mind well enough to decide which exact words they say in accordance to their personality that is not my own?
I want to keep playing tabletop RPGs for the story, combat and exploration, and part of me craves human interaction in small doses so I can't "just play a video game", but it's really mentally exhausting for me to the point of being not fun.

Of course I can get by when I want to suggest a course of action, or I feel my character agrees or disagrees with someone, but those are short sentences and far between. What's hard for me is separating how I think from how my character thinks when I as a player have nothing in particular to say on a topic.

Whenever I think about speaking in-character, I have to think "Am I sure my character's opinion and their manner of expressing it are consistent with all the traits I want to convey?", which takes too long and by then the in-character conversation has moved on.
When inspiration finally strikes me and I can spit out a half-decent line of dialogue quickly, I'm never sure if it actually makes sense for my character's intended personality or just sounds dramatic.

In real life, I only speak when spoken to, when I seriously have something to add to the discussion, or when I want something. But in games I've been pressured to participate more when I haven't said anything in 10 minutes, and my last group kicked me out for being too quiet.
Playing a mute character probably isn't the answer, because I've been in a group with one, and she was one of the most nuanced and likeable PCs I've ever seen through eloquent descriptions of body language, which I have even more trouble writing on the fly.

Please try to give a more detailed answer than "practice", because I don't want to be kicked out of any more groups.

Here's as basic an explanation of acting as I can give.

In every scene, your character has a goal that they're working toward. Keep in mind what that goal is. Everything your character says and does is something that character feels will get them closer to achieving that goal. Worry less about affectations and traits. Just stay focused on simple goals.

Okay this is going to sound a lot like "practise" but stay with me because I'm going to tell you how.

If you can join a local improv' or drama group it is literally the best thing to prepare you if you can afford the commitment. I did youth theatre for over a decade, I find shifting in and out of character incredibly easy and when I GM I roll out new stuff on the fly. I'm not special I've just been doing it for a long time.

You don't just find it hard just because it's not in your nature you're also bad at it and this demoralises you. Only by forcing yourself to be in uncomfortable learning situations will you improve.

Try reading some Shakespeare or other plays and getting into the characters as you read them, try and mimic them personalities on the page especially the larger than life ones. Whenever I see a new film or read a new book I like to think like the character I liked most for the next few days, try it it's super fun.

Sweet, now we don't have to worry about disturbing other people while gaming. And it's a lot easier to send secret messages laced with profanity.

I think it actually might improve our ability to game
>>
As in, everyone is constantly reading eachother's thoughts at all times?

Yeah probably, most of us are brutally honest. It might make secret character motivations and GM planning and the like kind of lame though.

Why would I be mad that the author of D&D 5e signed my player's handbook? It just increases any resale value the book has.

Would depend on if it's with a pen or a marker. Also if any artwork is covered vs one of those extra blank pages that sometimes happen on print runs.

As far as game books go I can't remember the last time I've been in a FLGS.

How many of you folks still go to brick and mortar places to buy RPG books?

Quite. It means they didn't sign it for me, but for their own amusement.

What's the most shameful defeat you or another player has ever suffered? The most pathetic enemy that has defeated a member of your party?

I was a level 5 bard in a 5ed campaign and I lost a fight against a fucking turtle

We got a TPK because of a fucking sword
no, it wasn't a magical animated sword, neither it was wielded by the enemy, it was just really damn heavy

Playing a vampire game, one of the players insisted on trying to carry a huge-ass sword that was meant for characters with strenght 4, while he had strenght 2 only. The poor idiot pathetically dragging the sword with him was so funny that it made us fall prey to an ambush and got completely fucked over

This was caused mostly by stupidity on my end
>doing test game for JoJo /tg/ homebrew system
>version of the rules were sparse at best, so had to make a lot of calls myself, which lead to dumb results.
>two players are put into an arena and told to fight with their stands
>let's call them John and Ted
>at some point in the fight, Ted finds an extremely heavily reinforced door
>Ted decides to start ORAORAORAing the door
>decide the best way to resolve this is to have him roll against the door
>two crits and five minutes later, he almost has the door completely destroyed
>Ted goes for one more punch
>crit fail
>door rolls crit success
>ohfuck.jpg
>"Anon... What just happened?"
>"Well you see Ted, do you know the difference between plastic deformation and elastic deformation?"
>"Uhh... No?"
>"Neither does your character, one of the indentations you made while punching sprung back and smacked you in the face"
>his character gets flung away though several walls
>almost dead
>lands next to John's character
>manages to run away just long enough for the John to corner him
>John then proceeds to punch Ted in the dick until he dies

Needless to say, I don't let inanimate objects roll back anymore

I didn't see one of these threads, fellow fa/tg/entlemen, and I'm incredibly bored. How about we make have another of those build a setting threads?

Post a fact about the setting, each fact is true unless it contradicts a previous one. I'll begin:

The universe is the interior of a gigantic, four dimensional clock, with habitable clockwork islands evenly spaced within it. In this universe, each island is a separate time, and the passage of time functions differently. Travelling to a different island clockwise causes your personal time to move forward, aging you. Travelling counterclockwise does the opposite, making you younger.

There are evil forces that want the clock to stop working. And a holy order of watchmakers repairing the damage they cause.

There's a race called Coggets living on Twilok at 9:12. The males are tall and fat, the females short and skinny to the point of looking emaciated by human standards. The males wear thick, rusted bronze armor covered in moving gears; the females wear a curved, thin strip of metal that covers their dainty bits, as if someone fashioned clothing out of springs.

They are not born there, but are instead grown as a slave race in the Ozymandius factory at 12:08. They are then sent to mine metal, mostly at the massive ore field of Twilok.
>>
Nobody actually knows anything about the true creator of the universe. A creature existed in the darkness before everything else, but it did not know anything about itself or the world it saw suddenly come into existence. At some point, the creature shattered itself and the beings who collected the fragments became the current gods of the setting, who are given credit for making everything.

Hello, I am fairy new to GMing and I've been running a basic D20(I think it's called GURPS) based campaign.

Since most of the rules, skills I've made up myself I dont have much reference when creating NPCs or Scenarios.

Any suggestions for interesting Boss or enemy mechanics that I can utilize?

Things like:
-Must kill adds before boss
-Shield that's is generated somehow
-Only hit by certain types of attacks

Trying to make combat more interesting than spawning enemies and waiting for the group to kill them without thinking.

You can always incorporate environmental factors into the fight. Be it a big firepit, a geyser shooting steaming water, a poison cloud or lasers flying about a mad scientists lab. Give them a separate turn on the initiative roster.

Another alternative is to have multiple statlines for the Boss, and use each one for a different 'phase' of the fight. So as the boss gets beaten down he gets more desperate and stops casting magic and becomes more frantic, wielding a giant blade and trying to cleave the heroes apart, with different stats to represent that.
>>
>>47696726
Ahhhhh. I never thought about incorporating environmental hazards. I like it.

Your friend was cheating. Cheating in points, cheating in game mechanics, and probably cheating in any way possible.

We didnt need a second thread about this. Learn the rules so you can call him on his bullshit. Because if what you said was true, your friend is a tremendous faggot.

I normally play neutral-aligned dickheads or pragmatic people, so I decided in my latest game, where due to party balance I agreed to play a healer, she'd be a pure-hearted kind and patient chick. Is there any kind of twist I can add to this character to make it more interesting? The campaign is 100% inside of a single city, it's a rebels-vs-evil-government situation.

>>47693786
She's a government/church secretary, possibly a liaison between the church and crown, the sole breadwinner for her household, and legitimately wants to keep her job.
>>
>>47693786

Refuse to just deal with the cognitive dissonance of killing enemy combatants like they're not real people too. If your character is really a pure-hearted healer she probably wouldn't be too understanding of just killing the enemy because they're the enemy and even if they're obviously deserving maybe she's more focused on reforming than punishing them for their sins. Especially since the "evil" part of the government is probably the heads of the state and not the cops you'll be fighting along the way.

Some ideas.

Make her pure-hearted and kind, but go the Charlie Brown route. She's genuinely a good person, but she's like that because she thinks she has to be, not necessarily because she wants to be. That's why she went off and learned healing arts, because she felt like it was the right thing to do and the world needed it. She's always thinking of other people first, even when deep down she just wants to act selfish like everyone else. Ideally, this would best manifest in a situation where she has to either put her life on the line and probably die for others, or have the chance to walk away scott free.

Give her some kind of mental issue relating to her job, or at least start her down that path. Paramedics/EMTs--IRL "healers"--have some of the highest rates of PTSD of any career. As a cleric who's focused on healing and attaching herself to adventurers, she's making a living to dealing with people on the worst days of the lives. That gets to someone. Have her start turning to her god(s), and be left wondering why if they're so great and kind they always let such awful things happens.

Put some kind of angle on her role as a cleric. I always liked clerics because they open themselves up as great paranormal investigators. By virtue of their job their surrounded with myth and lore about all kinds of weird ghosts and demons. Maybe even though she's a good person, she's obsessed with finding creepy stuff and it gets in the way of her better judgement.

Have her totally be unable to reconcile reality with Good vs Evil. She's not a smitebot, but she's monumentally confused by things like an Evil person being out in the daylight. After all, the Sun is your god, right? And it's a Good god. So how can Evil walk in his light? It doesn't make sense, guys.

And above all, above fucking all, don't do the basket case healslut shtick.
