I'm looking for art in a similar style to pic related. I'm going to run a game in the vein of Bloodborne/Innistrad/that colonial victorain style. wild west and other similar 1700-1800 type dress is fine too. I'll post what I have.
Why are clerics and paladins so similar?
I would understand and enjoy a class divide between the wimpy priests/healers and the badass holy warrior guy, those are cool. But as it stands Clerics are just a little weaker then Fighters but are holy, and then paladins are holy too but better. I feel like they are too similar and unnecessary in the game.
Way back supposedly the DnD cleric class was based around a vampire hunting sort of concept, and I'm guessing paladin came later
Aside from tradition I would say combat healing isn't very encouraged in most editions, so a more fighty class makes more sense to at least some of the people that make that decision as opposed to a more priest-like role
>>43767925
At the start, clerics were based on healing, while Paladins were based on attacking. Clerics were holy mages, Paladins were holy fighters.
These days Clerics are not nearly as squishy, so the gap isn't as big. However, Clerics do tend to have more abilities that can be used at range than Paladins, and can can be more versatile.
Clerics were always meant to be healers rather than front-liners, but people bitched about clerics dying too easily because everyone would run off and ignore the fact that their cleric couldn't keep up until suddenly they realize their healer's down and there's still twenty more goblins. In response, later editions made clerics beefier.
Maybe it's too subtle for you to see, but clerics and paladins do fill very distinct roles in a roleplaying game. I would hate to see either of them go.
This is why I prefer them as distinct things. Clerics as basically holy versions of sorcerers/wizards. Not built to be tanky or physical combatants.
Is it really the best RPG system out there? Or is it just a /tg/ meme?
>>43767849
Recommending GURPS in every thread is a meme.
Liking GURPS is a thing, however, that some folks do unironically. I hear it's pretty good for gritty modern settings with firearms.
>>43767849
The name stands for Generic Universal Role Playing System, and it is exactly that. It can run any setting, any theme, any genre, in any time period, however it does not do anything exceptionally well.
My advice is that if you want to homebrew as much as possible but you don't want to make a game system from scratch, run it in GURPS because it will run it well, no matter what it is, but if you know of a system that is built to do what you want it to do, then run that instead.
The game itself is complicated at first glance. This is because it has a rule for absolutely everything, however it is recommended that you toss out any and all unneeded rules and use only the rules that are relevant to the game you are playing. The system is built specifically to allow you to do this without breaking the system in half in the process. This all means that while you as the GM can customize the setting to be what you want it to be, it requires you to know the ins and outs of the system so that you know what to include and exclude, and that you spend a good amount of time before running the game determining what you want to use from the system and what you want to toss out, which optional rules you want to use, and what modifiers you want to implement if any, as well as what skills are available, what point value the players are, and other such things.
Once you get all the front loaded crunch out of the way, the game runs surprisingly smoothly.
To expand on the previous posters' points a little, the reason recommending GURPS is a meme is because that's its purpose, to serve as an option for ANY situation.
So, no, it's not by any means the best system out there, but it is a viable option for essentially any campaign, and therefore, potentially the solution to any given issue you're having with it.
It's like, say, a Swiss Army Knife. If your friend asks you for "a tool" without being super specific, you hand him a Swiss Army Knife, because it's a mediocre version of a high number of tools. So recommending GURPS became akin to the "Have you tried not playing D&D" meme; in that, often, the complaints people have are direct results of the systems they're using. So unless they get more specific, or explain how they want to solve it IN system, the GURPS suggestion is technically valid.

What warnouns would do well in the IK Hunger Games?
Got a tourney coming up for thanksgiving weekend.
Should I try to play Khador in an attempt to git gud with them or should I stick to my usual of trolls, albeit my lists are bit experimental?
>>43768114
Play what you know.
Also, Khador is terrible and Trolls are very likely in the top 3 in terms of faction strength right now, so jumping ship to Khador to be competitive makes no sense.

this happens down in a dungeon with no (nearby or yet known) exit and everyone is pretty fucked up, for the record.
Fuck no, it was obviously undead, and also, who cares? Alignment is the worst part of D&D, and that's saying something.
>>43767494
Seems reasonable, given the circumstances.
sup /tg/
my d&d campaign has been running for a few months now, and as the dm i'm getting a bit bored. they've been tracking down macguffins to release a trapped god and they're just trucking along each week, hunting them down. i think part of the problem is that i have given them too much of a time limit, and now they won't stop just travelling between the different plot points. i don't know what to do to get them to stop down and do some sidequests unless they kind of have no choice (eg. if they might die for not doing a sidequest, they'll do it. but that's it).
i really need some ideas for good sidequests for a mid-high level group to make them forget their time limit. i won't punish them for not relentlessly pursuing the main quest, but they don't seem to realise that.
You have a group that is focused and directed towards your plot coupons, and you want to throw them off?
Have one coupon get stolen by a crime ring, which steals from a party member once the crime ring notices the party systematically disassembling them.
If you get bored, you can always kinda force them onto a sort-of "sidequest" like them getting trapped in a different dimension or them getting displaced in time by 100 years or something.
Have some other macguffin magically shrink them down to microscopic size and now they have to deal with the fantasy microscopic world.
Have fun with it.
Or straight out tell them you aren't really timing them on shit.
Ask one of your players if they have a past that could flesh out into an interesting sidequest for a short time.
It's ok for one character to have the spotlight for a little bit.

Shouldn't this game be right up /tg/'s alley?
- Fantasy RPG
- Better system and more balanced than DnD5e
- Heavily inspired by Warhammer Fantasy
- Written by one of the writers of Warhammer Fantasy RPG
- Pretty good reviews all around
- You can play a robot powered by the souls of the dead, if you want
SotDL general, what's your impressions? What are you doing with the game?
Shadow of the demon lord - Survival of the Fittest
https://u.pomf.io/bxrhhh.7z
An official (but actually relatively uninspiring) adventure for starting characters.
I think it would be a cool idea for each person to make two level 0 characters - one hand-made, and one totally random - and then they have to use whichever one survives (or just pick one if they both do).

You made it sounds like they tried to create worst game ever.
>>43766839
I tried this, they tried to make a super simple d20 system that just ended up being largely dull. It doesn't ever feel like the players can really become super powered heroes (whether or not you want that is personal preference) also they had a super edgy additional class in a separate rule book that had some of the worst magical relm I've seen. Let me see if I can find it.

As an example, this is from a one-off hentai.
The world has been covered in a thick toxic fog that is heavy enough to sail on. Humans constructed walls and shelters to live in.
Some people have jobs delivering messages back and forth, and some fish up old tech and artifacts.
It's a legend that some people adapted to the fog and live in it like mythical creatures. However, it's observably true that horrifying creatures resembling deep sea life live in the fog and will attack humans.
>>43765058
Wouldn't your players still wind up trying to fuck monster girls, though? Or would you just excise them entirely?
>>43765250
Just don't make them fuckable, or if you do, make that trait be a predatory tool to catch people, and have the PCs know folklore and rumors about it. Nothing makes a player more paranoid than knowing that it's a horror-y game and then meeting a strange, beautiful lady in a creepy place, in my experience.
Become The Vampire Quest 6
You look at the shot for a moment, then at Stephen.
“You know what? I'm up for it. I'm trying to keep a low profile, so if I hold back a bit it's only because I don't need a vampire hate mob chasing me around the school.”
Stephen nods slightly.
“I was thinking something similar, actually. But we won't leave you out of the fun. We're mostly just going to be chasing them off. I don't think we'll be hunting to kill tonight, but you never know.”
You nod slightly, down the shot, and give Sammy a smile.
“I promise to come back in one piece.”
Sammy nods and smiles, first at you, then at Stephen. Stephen gives Sammy a wink and clasps you on the shoulder, leading you away.
“You know, I couldn't have planned tonight better myself. Prove yourself at the hunt and I think we'll be having another party soon to celebrate the newest member of our clan.”
He leads you over to a group of young men, teenagers and a few older men who, frankly, are built like two brick shithouses stuck together. Some of them regard you with curiosity, one or two with some level or scorn, and the rest look eager to get out on the hunt, grinning at you and making comments back and forth in hushed tones. Stephen walks past them to a large wooden door.
“Alright lads, into the locker room. Hang up your stuff, get changed and we'll gather by the old oak tree. And Matthew, no streaking. We've got fur when we shift but that's no excuse for indecency, especially when we've got pants that fit our shifted forms.”
The werewolves file into the locker room and Stephen chuckles a bit.
“I'll meet you by the front door in a moment.”
The door closes, and you shrug a little. You head for the front door and spot Marie making a straight line towards you.
>Head for the front door, you've got a vampire to kill

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.
Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!
Currently, you were part of Artois' hunting party, chasing after a traitorous lord that had tried to assassinate you and Tarin. You had wondered what he would have to gain during the night you were waiting for Clementine to be repaired, with Tarin pointing out that having killed two of Reikland's biggest thorns in their side would have put him in a very good bargaining position when he defected. You guess it made some sort of sense.
However, that sort of subterfuge, not to mention the idea of even defecting at all, had seemed to put the entire Breton camp in an uproar. There were so many volunteers to join Artois' hunting party that he could have practically just led the entire army out.
However, Artois was playing it wise, and only took knights and squires that he could trust, mostly from his own house and his closest allies, which included your platoon.
"I hope that your steed is well?" Artois asks as Tarin deflty weaves through the trees to stay on his tail.
"Yeah, she's running almost as good as new." You grin. "They still rushed a few things though, so she's not at 100%."
"Let us hope that it will not prove to be a problem for us." Artois chuckles. "I know that your steeds are more suited for traversing this terrain. Would you not mind riding ahead of us?"
"Well, how many VTs does this Kalendor guy have?" Bannon asks.
"In addition to his own steed, Kalendor has six knights and a dozen squires." Artois explains. "Not exactly an army, but not a small force, either."

We can't catch him with such a large party, but if we go in front of them, we have an actual chance. Further, his numbers don't matter for much, so long as we can slow him down.
Besides, we're hunters. While a royal hunt might consist of many men and hounds, a hunt out in the mountains is a solitary prowl.
