In 3rd edition D&D (and by extension Pathfinder), was the inclusion of "touch AC" a mistake?
Touch/Flatfooted AC added a sensible new layer to combat that made certain abilities range from not much better than an ordinary ability to extremely useful, depending on the opponent.
Anything that encourages players to analyze their opponents is good in my book, and using touch attacks on slow enemies and avoiding using them on fast ones makes sense.
The issue is that there were few non-spell touch attacks available to players, and there were a few of them with fairly wonky math.
Overall, it's a good design direction, but not one without its flaws.

being 3aboo is suffering.
So, recent BL publications pretty much confirm that Sanguinius was corrupted by chaos and was basically a ticking time bomb. Who do you think they'll ruin next?

What are good systems for Warhammer Fantasy und 40K if you do not like the official systems (Dark Heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay)?
>>43805466
Orks, check. Elves. Check. Dragons. Check. Sci-Fi. Check. Shadowrun.
>>43805466
Burning Wheel can do low-powered Warhammer Fantasy pretty well.
I guess we have super colorless now
So /tg/ I just had an idea for a fantasy setting.
Basically, elves and dwarfs were precursor races who were locked in endless war due to their differences. Both races were taking heavy casualties, so the elves decided enough was enough and magically created a warrior race. This new race was more physically imposing than the elves, they were sturdier, stronger and more aggresive. Their name was Humans.
With humanity as their front line, the elves pushed back the dwarfs to their deepest strongholds. And as the end seemed inevitable, the dwarfs came with an answer. From captured humans, through the means of alchemy, they created their own race of warriors. They distilled qualities such as brute strength and aggression and unleashed the orcs upon the world.
The battlefield equal again, the two new races thrived in the war they had been born to wage. It wasn't long before neither of the precursor races actively participated in the war. As time passed the dwarfs retreated deep in their mountains and the elves disappeared in their ancestral forests.
Now, millennia has passed and the precursor races are nothing more than a myth, a faint memory of times long past and gone. The known world is split in the Empire of Man and the Orc Khanate. The war continues, as it always has, as it always will.
Is it good/bad/terrible?
Would you run/play this setting, and if yes, how?
What system would you use?
>>43805257
It's alright.
>>43805257
It's fairly interesting. It wouldn't get me to play the game just because of the lore, but it's not turning me off the idea.
Would be cautiously optimistic. 8/10
OP here. Glad to see some you folks like it. I was wondering how a campaign in the setting would look like. I was thinking that perhaps the 'end goals' would be finding the precursor races and putting an end to the war, or something along those lines.
Alright you lazy whoreson bastards! On your feet! Scans show an inbound Tau strike force, prepare to take defensive positions!

They're here already? We might not even be able to get the second Chimera down at this rate.MY MAD MINUTE IS READY.
>>43805277
I wouldn't worry too much. We'll get fire support from the ship.
I am here fellow human. What do you command me to do in order to repel these honorable Tau scum?
I've been thinking /tg/, and this is the kind of thinking that watching Fist of The North Star, and reading up on Warhammer 40K fluff leads to.
I'm thinking of a Sororitas order devoted entirely, if not mostly to melee weapons, maybe this is to satiate my weeb fetishism for close combat weapons or because the only notable female centric faction (Well, apart from the Eldar, dark and craft-world, though they're to a lesser extent), should get as much opportunity to brain a cultist with their bare fists and/or a thunder-hammer as the marines do.
And yeah, there are the Sisters Repentia, but they're not looking to survive their berserk charge in any fit state.
Anybody got any ideas rules wise? Or even better, how this would work out in fluff?
Hmm, check out the death cultists, they have a nice mix of religious zeal and focus on pointy sticks.
fluff proposal 1) : Order is designated keeper of cathedrals/relics/library/whatever... Their duties are mostly ceremonial (plus a bit of security patrols). No need for guns, but since they have to stay fit (idleness begets heresy after all) they do a lot of martial art training.
Eventually bodyguard duty with emphasis on crowd control, no need for guns either, just put your power armor between the cardinal and any threat, and gut anything that comes to close of his...

I was actually thinking of something more classical, well, number 3 sounds good, but I was considering that their library contains some old earth stories, perhaps of medieval heroes and such (St George, King Arthur etc), and they happen to have quite a few power weapons or similarly useful melee type implements, not just chain-swords, and fight using the standard shield/hand-weapon combo, perhaps operating alongside a group of unarmoured sisters providing fire support from behind the lines.
Alternatively it...

How's troll lifestyle, economy and governance affected by the inability to go in the sun? How do trolls grow food? How do they interact with other cultures? What do trolls trade, and when? What do they do with all the inevitable statues popping around every morning?
Trolls don't trade, they hoard gold. And when they do offer gold to humans, the gold turns out to be an illusion.
And in folklore, it seems they're predators, and thus don't farm.
>>43805019
Than where do they keep the troll cows and sheep?
>>43805031
Ah, I forgot about Norway, I was going after Swedish folklore. The thing is, in Sweden, there's a distinction between trolls and giants. Giants tend to be much more like humans, and have cattle and stuff. Trolls are magical, tricky creatures, kinda similar to the Faerie, living underground and messing with people's minds.
In Norway, trolls and giants are kind of the same thing. Bigger and dumber, less tricky.

Um, Witch Hunter, I guess. What other ones are there?
Is it worth using a higher slot to cast bless to cast it on more people?
Does the dwarf 'advantage on saves against poison' mean the poison effect, or both the effect and a save vs poison damage?
Many RPG systems give a bonus to a fighter that has higher ground in a melee fight. Is there a higher ground advantage IRL, and if there is, why exactly?Star Wars fags, not every thread is about your precious Obi Wan
>>43804918
Yeah there's a higher ground advantage for ants.
Why do we need two threads for this topic, OP?
>>43804918
It's a case-by-case basis. The advantage is in rpgs solely to add tactical depth to the game.
Does anybody else hate how Rangers are portrayed in DnD (and to be fair, other games too)?
I love the archetype of le nature man who can track and fight with the best of them, can find and create natural poisons and cures, has awesome animal companions and such, but I DON'T like the fact they get magic. I think its a very poor way to give the class strength or spice them up.
What abilities should Rangers get that aren't super magical in nature? Something mystical, like being able to calm animals with your voice or see through the eyes of your companion...

So basically, this supernatural shit is good, that supernatural shit is bad. Because magic, I ain't gotta explain shit.
4e rangers had no magic at all, and everyone complained about them because "not muh old school ranger" or "damage damage damage."
Spellcasting is all in how you fluff it IMO. 4e Rangers were functional and strong without spells, but in 3e and 5e the removal of spellcasting is almost certainly going to weaken the class more than any replacement feature will strengthen it. The archetypal Ranger does have magic to some extent in LotR (but so do many fighting/rogueish classes in D&D inspirational materials, like the Grey Mouser or Cugel the Clever).
In 3e particularly the spell-less ranger variant was its weakest option. Its strongest was the mystic ranger (with enhanced spellcasting) or shapeshifting...

Dear /tg/.
What is the purpose of wearing shin guards without boots or shoes?
The answer is probably going to be "fetishes of the artist" but I figured I'd ask if there was a valid reason as well.

Subtopic: The Nemesis RPG
I've always heard Nemesis put forth as this sparkly alternative to Call of Cthulhu for nasty survival horror--but it always seems like a lot of theorycrafting and not much actual play. I'd be curious to hear some actual play reports.
And a horror gaming general if you feel like it. I'll bump with the occasional pic if this doesn't slide right off the board.
>>43804371
Interested
Got any sample of the scenarios or mechanics?
>>43804380
Nemesis is free online. AFAIK there's no official scenarios or continued support from the publisher--it was a one off freebie based on the One Roll Engine. Basically ORE lite with the unknown armies sanity mechanic.
Hope other anons will post pics. Gooey creatures and body horror are cool, but more atmospheric stuff is cool too.
A rogue player in the game I'm running came up with an interesting way to cheat in a gambling den and I'm wondering how /tg/ would react to it. The player's logic went something like this:
>gambling den is likely full of cheaters, but there should be some honest players as well
>against honest players he could win via cheating
>against cheaters he would lose as they are more experienced and wouldn't get caught
>since he's a...

I definitely think the idea is a clever one, and the player ought to get something for his idea, but his idea doesn't have to work out perfectly. While he might have scared away many cheaters, the most adept and undetectable may not have been cowed. Additionally, the threat of guard intervention doesn't work on everyone, as some of the cheaters might have bribed some of the guards or developed some sort of repor.
I definitely think this player's idea is a fun one. It's up to you how much you want to reward him for it. It depends on the kind of NPCs he's dealing with, which is something you control. Perhaps the cleverest cheating NPC saw his trick and became impressed by him. Perhaps nobody saw what happened and his plan worked flawlessly. Or perhaps it just failed and cheaters still think he's an easy target regardless.
>>43804340
That's actually pretty clever. Although giving him carte blanche over the gambling den is probably a bad idea, he definitely deserves some kind of payoff. Maybe throw in some minor conflict with the pit boss/equivalent later on down the road as an extra plot hook if you need one.
>>43804390
It's very early in the campaign and the group needed extra funds so it was a one-off thing with the rogue netting a large (but not unreasonable) amount of money. They probably won't visit that gambling den again.
I think the idea of some clever cheating NPC being impressed is a really good one though.
Thanks for the reply anon.
