So, my DM is pretty tough on us, I need some help on how to survive in a campaign with wacky monsters that act like god versions of themselves(trolls with 500+ hp, class levels above 9, bumped stats, and generally boosted everything).

He isn't unfair, he has been extremely apt to allow us creative freedom with our roleplaying, but the combat is brutal as all get out.

The grand total of deaths in his campaign is close to 15. The party level is averaging on 9-11. The system is 3.5, the only books he has banned are the dragon mag(and compendium).

Any and all suggestions needed.

The obvious answer is leave, but since you won't be doing that, I can tell you how I dealt with killer DMs, back in my younger days when I was too stupid to just leave and play with other people.

If the GM is going to kill you in every combat scenario, talking to him about it is your first step. I have never, NEVER had a GM improve as a result of this. Some have remained the same, others have become worse to punish us for questioning them. But even though it is pointless, you should still try and speak with him, say you're concerned, just in case he's one of these mythical GMs who supposedly exist who actually listen to feedback. Ask other players if they feel the same way to judge if you're just the odd man out, in which case, again, probably best to leave.

When he ignores you or becomes worse in retaliation, the only option you have (other than the option of leaving) is to invalidate him. You can't try and compete. For one thing, you'll never be able to minmax a character strong enough to overcome a dick GM who can simply alter reality at his whim. But more importantly, he WANTS you to try and beat him. He wants you to build more and more powerful characters so he can keep crushing them, your frustrated inability to defeat him increasing the blood flow into his dick, much like someone who goes on the internet and defeats children at a game he plays 40 hours a week as a way to stroke his ego.

Instead, do the opposite of what he wants, and create characters who refuse to engage with his bullshit. Play minmaxed face characters with low intelligence, severe apathy, and borderline depression. When things get dangerous, just give up. Constantly try to surrender to enemies, even as they pummel you to death. Act as though you just don't get it, and let him kill you over and over. Just keep shrugging it off and making the exact same useless character each time.

More often than not, this kills their spirit, and they give up.

Or you could leave.

Good advice, anon!
>>43802010
I'd just do what this guy said. If he's making combat difficult for you just refuse to do it. Whenever he sends a monster after you just have a winge about how unfair this campaign is and just refuse to try and have the least bit of fun with the campaign he's running as you possible can!

Is it a combat orientated campaign because he's pushing you to do combat, or because the players constantly seek it out?
>>
>>43802010
GM yourself, watch everyone have more fun when you're running the game, maybe That GM will get a clue (if only out of butthurt jealousy).

Discuss.

>What is it that makes a Horseman of the Apocalypse?

Hey /gents/, how's the night/day going?

I come to you for advice on a Mutants and Masterminds 3e question.

Basically, I'd like to trim a pl15-20 concept into a playable pl10 one.

Pic related.

What's essential for a Horseman of the Apocalypse?

Does Death need to have the full suite of powers? Or can he just be damn good at appearing somewhere and killing everything in the room?

Does War need to be good at all arenas, or can he just be a damn good swordsman or a crack shot?

Basically what I'm after is "How do you make a Horseman of the Apocolypse for a PC that's still recognisable as more than 'That guy who's really good at killing'?

And just as a side question, kind of related but not really, since we've had a few threads with people who seem to enjoy the Fate universe...

What are the limits on Servants anyway? Do they have to historical in some sense of the word, or can they be more conceptual like the Four Horsemen?

Would their Phantasms be their Horses?

Is there any system where magic uses a deck of playing cards, and where stuff happens when the deck is depleted? As a representation of "too much magic in one place = reality gets fucked up".
18 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
To clarify: everyone using magic in the same general area is drawing from one deck. Some spells would work off the discard pile and let people replenish the deck if they're trying to avoid the reality fuck.
>>
deadlands USES a card deck, so might be a good base for a system. Haven't heard of one that you're looking for though.

might I suggest if you homebrew, using the suits for types of magic (spades/swords for attack magic, diamonds/pentacles for creation magic)?

I'm in a frustrating situation /tg/: a while ago I agreed to trying DMing for a group of friends. We're doing DnD since this is the first tabletop we've really tried, but the main problem is there's anywhere up to 9 people at the table at any given time, and since they're all old friends I can't convince them to make separate groups or boot anyone. Even in spite of having to simultaneously learn the rules myself and scale up, the real problem is the lack of courtesy at the table: people are constantly talking over each other, slowly raising the volume and wasting time. It's also not uncommon for them to throw multiple questions at once, and while simple "just checking" questions would be fine, some people lie between not having read the rules as much and just not having any common sense (just last session I got asked if survival was used for searching rooms.) If they weren't my friends I would've given up by now, but in this case I have to ask if there's any way to moderate noise without seeming like an asshole. A talking stick is starting to seem like a decent choice but I'd like something that doesn't make me seem like a disgruntled teacher or an angry mum. Where do you draw the line between "we're having fun" and "I'm dealing with uni students that scream like primary schoolers?"

>>
Talking stick is fine I think.

It does send the message of "I'm done with your shit and I'm gonna treat you like kids for a while" but that, if these people are actually not just pieces of shit, should be enough to make them realize their behaviour is pretty unacceptable for what they're doing.

Nine people is too many. If you really can't get them to split try this:

Appoint an assistant DM. They can distract the other people and discuss mechanics with them and stuff while you handle four or five of them at at time. Try to split the party in social encounters. Put a turn timer on them so that combat progresses faster.

Just some thoughts.
>>
>>43801491

HOW THE FUCK DID YOU THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO START OFF IN AN UNFAMILIAR SYSTEM WITH NINE FUCKING PLAYERS!?

Like, there's your problem right there, Jesus fuck. Start with three people and work your way up to five. Nobody runs nine people and stays sane unless they all approach tabletop like an order of benedictine monks.

Can you cut down your group size? Take out the most serious players and run them in a small group? Would your friends understand if you told them all that nine people is too many to deal with when you're still learning the system yourself? Would they understand if you picked your favorites and perhaps promised to run them in groups of three when each group has completed a short campaign? Don't run multiple campaigns, however, that's not a good thing for a beginner.

Been watching some mecha anime lately, and I want to try run a mecha game for my buddies, since our perma-GM is looking for a break, and I've run a few. What does /tg/ think about Mekton Zeta's system? Anything I should watch out for? The 1d4chan page* seems to make it out as something a little nutso, which sounds fun.

It depends on how serious you want the campaign to be.

Mekton Zeta is great for more super robot-inclined stuff (e.g. later Gundam Unicorn, Gurren Lagann), whereas I prefer using modified AdEva for more realistic stuff (Gundam Thunderbolt, VOTOMS).

A few minutes after the taxi drops Theresa off at my house, I find myself the recipient of an especially cheerful text from Irene, complete with a selfie of her hugging a very embarrassed-looking Theresa. While feeling pretty damned good about myself, I lean back in my seat and turn to Charlotte.

"So..." I glance out the window, "what exactly did you have planned for the rest of the day?" I ask. "Since I'm just kinda tagging along."
"Nothing in particular," Charlotte shrugs. "I was just going to go to the mall for a while and then wing it from there."
"You think Mina would still want to hang out?"
"Eh?"
"Well I kind of messed up your plans with her," I shrug, "and I've kind of been missing her myself."

I haven't seen her since we left school on Friday and I didn't even bother to call her up yesterday... sometimes I feel like a really crappy friend.

"Might as well call her," Charlotte replies. "And if we're lucky, she hasn't already made other plans."

Following a naval bombardment and invasion of the East Coast by the German Empire, the United States reformed its society along Prussian militarist and 19th century progressive/modernist/rationalist lines as per the history presented in "The Repairer of Reputations". As does not actually occur in that story but is suggested as a possibility, this United States has been a monarchy since soon after its founding, perhaps in an early counter-revolution like some kind of alternate Shays Rebellion or Hartford Convention, under the Castaigne Dynasty.

A major war before our world's Great War where the government was capable of nationalizing/seizing military control of key industries has led to the major monopolies only growing stronger and turning into sovereign megacorps, rather than being broken up in an anti-corporate Progressive era. Centralized corporations helped us win the war and helped rebuild the East Coast, no progressive in this alternate history would want to break them up, instead the laws regarding corporate sovereignty and a largely Congress-replacing consortium of megacorps were themselves Progressive innovations by the likes of Teddy Roosevelt.

The Big 10 are...
Standard Oil, Bell (telecom), U.S. Steel (and coal), General Electric, United Air, Western Union (bought Sears and Roebucks and became 19th century Amazon and Paypal), American Dry Goods (19th century Walmart), International Mercantile Marine Co., International Harvester (agricorp), and Leland Motors.

To prevent infighting among the Big Ten, the monarchy chartered a unified railroad consortium under the management of the neutral Vanderbilt Family, given ducal titles and divested of their corporate holdings.

Welcome to Saiyan Quest. This takes place shortly after the war against the Tuffles, as the Saiyans look for more foes to battle in the absence of their old enemies.

Voting will operate on a first to five system, at least for the time being.

Dialogue is allowed to be added to votes, as are actions (though I'll ignore what I consider shitposting)

During battles, options will usually have a number assigned to them. After that vote has won, players will roll a d100, and have three chances to match or beat that number.

If a 100 is rolled, it is considered a crit success (unless 100 was the number you had to match).

If a 1 is rolled, it is a crit failure, regardless of whether or not the other two rolls are high enough to succeed.

If, during a battle, players want to attempt a writein action, that is allowed, but I am the one who will assign the number to it, so use caution

You're a young male Saiyan who fought in the war with the Tuffles. You are an average fighter for now, but have the potential of one of the greatest warrior races to roam the universe flowing through your veins. There is no limit to what you can accomplish through blood, sweat, and tears.

As the Alpha charges, you fire an energy blast into the ground in front of him, causing him to trip up.

With a yell, Bardock gives the Alpha a strong punch to the face, knocking him flat on his back. Rugula flies above the wounded lizard, firing an energy wave that pushes him away.

With a roar, the Alpha fires an energy blast up at Rugula, and with a yell, she falls and crashes to the ground, going still.

Your scouter tells you that she's still alive, but he's wounded. Her power's dipped below a thousand.

"Take this!" Bardock shouts, firing another energy wave into the creature's face and forcing it to stagger back.

Based on your description of California being a "bulwark against China", I would think that would give that region a nice mix of cold war esque red fear of communism and the tension of full war with the other NA remnants.
>>
>>43799922
When you say "the entire population of North America now lives in three locations", do you mean that everyone outside those areas were killed, or that the population of the entire continent immigrated to those locations?

Because my mental image of the situation will change drastically depending on which is the case.
>>
>>43800407
Almost everyone in urban environments died, suburbs did better, rural survived pretty well, all survivors congregated to military fort which then turned their labor to making the mega city while defending the territory. Fast forward and the population rebounded and grew like crazy thanks to technological advancements, population topped over a billion in NA alone, before the second apocalypse event knocked out 70% of them all over again. The mega city wasn't entirely killed, there's a large bulk of survivors fleeing in every direction from the mega city ruins.

The land of Aeons, a beautiful land full of mystery, magic and adventure. A place were great heroes are at a constant battle with the forces of evil, great monsters and demons alike. Wizards and Clerics are common place, along with creatures such as ogres and dragons. A land where adventurers travel in search of wealth, fame and power.
Kings and queens, under the protection of these well payed and respected men and woman rule with absolute authority, bringing glory to their allies and death to their enemies. It is truly a wonderful and dangerous place, and to be a adventurer in these times would truly be a life of freedom and prosperity...
At least it would be, if you were stronger...

You are Joe, the Farmer without a farm, who is in search of a new life in the capital city of Aldres, the largest and most prosperous city in the region after his home had been taken from him by the king. On his travels he had decided to take the long route around a fairly ominous forest that had blocked his path, adding an extra day to his travels in which he ran out of food and energy. Finally, after traversing finding his way back on the main road he had discovered a horse and cart being attack by a group of Rat men, and being the brave and brash soul he is, tried to protect it, leaving him with a terribly wounded leg and a new companion. The merchant, in gratitude, offered to take you to the city of Aldres, as he had no were left to go with his cargo destroyed.

It is a few uneventful days of travel with the young merchant, who had on your travels revealed his name to be David Alters. Apparently he was trying to pay back some debts in another town by doing some trading for the local guilds in the city, though with his miserable failure he doubts he should even show his face around there now. You each survive on the little bit of food that was left on the cart and after a few days travel, you finally catch a glimpse of something quite breathtaking for a person who's lived in a small cottage all his life. A large wall, about 30 or more feet tall, going out far and wide across the land, with many men stationed at the top with crossbows and bows. As you make your way down the road, you see a large, red and thick wooden set of doors with what seem to be a group of well armed and well armored guards standing post.
"Huh, there's usually only one or two men at guard there. Seems they've raised the security."
As you slowly make your way closer to the entrance, one of the guards,a large brute of a man with more hair on his face then on your head, holds out a large silver spear to the the two of you.
"Halt! What brings you dirty bunch to this fine city?" The guards look over the cart, seemingly cracking jokes to each. "Probably more stinkin farmers, like we don't got enough shit in this city as it is."
They don't seem to care much for you two.
