Hey /tg/, is there any way to make money from dming? Is there a way to make a decent living? I ask because I've been told by every party I've ever had that I'm a really good dm, and I really love doing it... I was just wondering if such a thing was even possible.

Pic unrelated.

My players want to run a GATE themed game. I thought the show was fun to watch, but no way realistic. How does /tg/ think things would go down if a fantasy world invaded Japan like in the animu? Or should I change were the portal is? Any thoughts tg?

Japan is fine, if you dont mind weeabo stuff.

A lot depends on which fantasy setting you are gateing to. As far as what would happen if gate...I think its pretty acurate. The Gate world does not have rampant magic the way say, Greyhawk or Golarion or Toril would. And the result is pretty much what you would expect when modern army goes against roman legion.

You open a portal to Golarion though, and you have things like ancient, intelligent dragons, centuries old litch lords, and other monsters that can change reality on a whim, and suddenly you wind up with a setting that looks more like pacific rim than gate. It all depends on where ya go.

Then again, its an anime about a magic gate opening up to a fantasy world, how much realism do you want?

So umm... Why does Edward Raggi get such a strong Hatdom? I mean sure you don't have to like his games but I don't get all the personal snuff.

Lamentations of the Flame Princess General as well I guess.

I don't get it either. I guess maybe some neckbeards are miserable angry dickheads who need someone to project their anger on?
I haven't read a lot from him, but I wouldn't describe what I have read as "smug" or "insufferable." That seems like people reading in stuff that's not there.
Then there's all the internet urban legends, like "he had a bad breakup and then made the Flame Princess to look like his ex so he could commission art of her being killed OMG" which is total bullshit, but I can see that folks who buy into that would be predisposed to hate him.

Personally I don't really care about his personal life, as long as the game is good, and it's SO damn good. He'd have to be a lot worse, lot Varg Vikernes level, before I'd even kind of give a shit about the designer's personal failings. (Though Myfarog would be shit even if Varg was a really good guy)

I'm not someone who really cares about him either way, but something I heard about was that when people complained about the over the top gore in the artstyle and story he intentionally went out and made another adventure with an effort to be as gory as possible.

Keep in mind that that's just something I heard in a Flame Princess thread I read ages ago, but the guy does seem to be a bit up himself to respond to criticism like that.

Other than that it's probably something blown way out of proportion.

I was just watching the Disney Shorts film on Netflix, and the first short was a musical adaptation of the story of John Henry. Now, I know there are steampunk stories set in the United States during and after the Civil War, but most of them mix fantasy things like dragons or zombies into what would otherwise be a type of sci-fi, and they often don't use steampunk for anything other than introducing modern technology into a fantasy setting. More importantly, stories like John Henry portray the industrialization brought about by steam as an evil thing, crushing the human spirit or, in the adaptation, takin' yer jahbs.

Are there any stories, settings, or other where the industrialization brought about by steam is actually portrayed as a positive, like it was during the actual Industrial Revolution?

Are there any steampunk settings that are set in America and involve entrepreneuers using steam to make themselves fabulously wealthy, aside from Ticket to Ride?

And are there any steampunk works where the actual engineering is given even a modicum of development and the world isn't just instantly turned into rusting, pipe-covered shantytowns?

The four powers of Chaos:
To live is to die.
To fight is to live.
To live is to struggle.
To live is to feel.

Where does Undivided fall within this pantheon of motivations? Is it to be subjugated by ones own emotions, or is it the aspiration to rise above them? Taking this further, with a more specific example: Countless thralls flock to Nurgle to save them, only to die by the pestilent gifts they so ignorantly asked for, but isn't the alternative and endless, slavish servitude as a daemon?
Does it just boil down to how much you value your own life (or the base emotions of the pantheon)? I mean, atleast among the traitor Astartes, if it is truly just immortality that they seek would it not be better to simply hunker down in a fortress world for all eternity?
An Astartes would live long enough to grow board of life (hell, for many plague marines death is their ultimate reward), and perhaps that's what drives some of the traitors out to seek war, while for many others I'm sure simple zealousness for their patron is sufficient.

My thoughts are convoluted on the matter. What do you think?

Word Bearers Marine.jpg

Like pretty much all things about Chaos, what Undivided means depends on the context of who is using it.

The Word Bearers believe that Chaos is a singular entity spread into four distinct fragments, and believe that by furthering the various causes of Chaos that they will bring about the Primordial Truth and learn the secrets of the universe. A Word Bearer must study and understand the concept and basic intricacies of each God, and practice certain rituals to each one all the time in order to continue their understanding. However, while they believe they perform the will of the Gods, they are also not willing to completely subject themselves to a single God, as they believe doing so removes you from the path of Enlightenment and sends you spiraling into oblivion as you descend in to total madness. This discipline and controlled approach to Chaos is why so many Word Bearers retain their intellect and purpose better than most other Chaos Marines of a similar age.

If you're in the Black Legion school of thought, Chaos Undivided is simply using the various powers of Chaos to further your own ambitions and goals. A follower of Chaos Undivided is not picky about who his patron is or how he serves the Chaos Gods - only that he is able to accomplish his mission. While they value purity of purpose much like the Word Bearers, their end game is not the ascension of Chaos and the destruction of the Galaxy but the overthrow of the Imperium and to be installed as its new rulers, and bring their version of order to the galaxy. Chaos is the most valuable weapon in their arsenal to accomplish this goal - while you are encouraged to understand it, and eventually becoming devoted to a single God is more than tolerated (even rewarded), you must still be willing to use the gifts that the Gods give you to further the grand design of your Legion/Warband. Common to these types of Warbands/Legions is a council of Marked Advisers of each God to an undivided Lord.

But degenration into nutters isvery much a threat to even those who follow undivided. I guess its the whole nature thing with chaos with whatever does not kill you makes you stronger.

Your non-halfling character's shoes have worn out, your walking speed has been reduced by 25% and your running speed has been reduced 50%. Every 50 meters you run now incurs you one hit point in damage. This will persist until a new pair of shoes is obtained.

Due to a weird genetic mutation your children will be immortal and will effectively stop ageing at 35.
You are not immortal and none of your grandchildren will be either.

How do you prepare your children for this? What would you do if you knew this was going to happen?

>>
>>44069595
Seeing as it is a weird and random genetic mutation, we would have absolutely no way of knowing until our first child turned 35, and even then for a few years after when we realize that they aren't aging.

So there is absolutely no way we could prepare for it, and we could not reasonably know it was happening.

I've been thinking about this for the past couple of weeks. Is there any way that something like a deck of cards can be used in RPGs without it being just another poor RNG? The key factors we're looking at here is how, if you draw a card from a deck, you know you won't draw it again, and that a deck can run out.

I already know about some of the systems that have used cards in the past, and they didn't seem to specifically look at those two aspects. A good direction, I think, is to make sure the cards aren't used as higher = better, because that leads to people shifting gears halfway based on what they've already drawn. This is why I moved on to looking at dominoes instead, because drawing bridges with them doesn't give any particular preference to any number.

tl;dr Only using dice is too mainstream.

Only interesting mechanic is that drawing cards removes them from the pool of future outcomes.

Otherwise shuffling and drawing is significantly slower than rolling dice.

Just straight up use gambling games in your RPGs. Pretty sure Deadlands used Blackjack for magic.

Why is our hobby stereotyped with foul body odor?

>>
>>44069007
Because sadly people who tend to play traditional games tend to be introverted people or shut-ins, who tend to have poor concepts of hygiene.

It's not even a conscious thing, I think some people just really don't know that they smell, especially if they're not around people much.
>>
People tend to pick our the worst quality of the worst person associated with what they are stereotyping. I can think of things worse than odor, but most people cringe at bad smells, and don't want to be associated with that.
And there are lots of smelly people who are into /tg/ related stuff. A game store I used to go to had, I kid you not, posters reminding the gamers to bathe properly.

Positive correlation.

Also big gaming venues aren't picked for ventilation or fragrance but price and number of wall sockets.

I haven't looked too much at it since it isn't really played much.
I like the art style because I'm a fucking weeaboo, but the mechanics always seem kinda...parasitic.
Like in that card you just posted it calls to draw another SPECIFIC card. And I'm hoping the whole Cthulu Resonator thing is more like tribes in mtg or that's just compounding the parasitism.

It seems somewhat interesting, but much like Yu-Gi-Oh, the cluttered cards put me off of the game somewhat. Tiny text is annoying to read, and unless the game is fabulous, it's going to be tiresome to deal with. Plus, I look at this card and really wonder if 600/600 is necessary. Why not just 6/6? Do you really need increments of 50? Why not 5 then, for a 60/60 creature? Just seems like big numbers for no real reason.

Someone has just deposited £150 into my bank account, or about $225. I want to get a really nice, miniatures-based game akin to the old game HeroQuest. Something for 1+ players that has good replayability.

Preferably it wouldn't JUST be combat-focused, though I know that's asking a lot. Some non-combat skill checks and interactions would be cool. As close to a fully-fledged RPG as possible, yet an all-in-one-box experience with miniatures and a lot of visual appeal? Can it be done?

Someone should have given James a copy of Philip K Dick's Eye in the Sky. It's basically this but far more coherent. The characters in Eye in the Sky travel from world to world where each character takes turn as the "god" of that world. Every time the "god" gets knocked out or killed they all move on to the next world.

I found pathetic he trying to hard to explain things that nobody cared for in first place and saying he dont want to spoil some things. James, nobody cares.

You have some terrible luck tonight. First you got interrupted so you went on a walk. Then you got lost and stumbled upon a sight you REALLY shouldn't have seen. Finally just as you attempt to hide from the trouble you heard coming your way. Suddenly could feel a plated gauntlet grab your shoulder from behind you. You rather regret looking behind you to see the Vampire Knight whom earlier you realized you had missed.

That was when you heard it speak for the first time.

"Nice try."

Just as around the corner came the the two parties you had seen earlier. Except...well those two were now much MUCH more hands on with each other until the knight sees you freeze. While the vampire noticed and looked over being shouting.

"YOU AGAIN!"

...well shit your rather fucked now aren't you?

Luckily just as the vampire knight was drawing his sword. No don't to run you through with it. The other knight spoke up even as the miss vampire approached licking her lips.

"HOLD IT! He is the Baroness Ezra's guy!"

"So what? She could afford to lose one," stated the vampire as she approached.

"Problem is she is fond of him and if she finds out..."

That made both vampires stop in their tracks.

"Why THIS guy though," asks the female vampire confused.

"I could ask the same thing about loverboy over there," deadpanned the Knight Vampire.

"uhh...well he is different."

"He is food."

"We knew each other before i got turned damn it!"

"Why not turn him and stay together forever then?"

"...Well uh I'm working on that."

"I do not appreciate that thought," mentions the knight whom they were discussing. "Besides not my fault your turning of her failed at stopping her love."

"Normally that just results in said loves ones ALSO getting turned or you know getting killed by them," explains the vampire knight.

"Well good thing she is above such thing isn't it?"

The vampire knight merely shakes his head before stating, "This is why I hate those borne with the best blood. So difficult to deal with...fucking babysitting duty."

"So wait what do we do with him then," asks the female vampire.

"...well uh I'll hm...I don't think the lady will appreciate anything happening to him...at the same time I doubt she'll like this too. Shit."

"What if we turn him," asks the vampire.

"No. I don't think she is into necrophilia."

"Coming from the necrophiliac..." mutters the vampire knight.

"Oh shut up already."

"Coming from the person who fucks her food..."

"I am suddenly beginning to understand why you hate him so much," says the Knight towards the female vampire.

"oh you have NO idea love...well I guess we can like uh...how MUCH does she like him?"

"Honestly I don't know. Why?"

"We'll make it her problem."

"...She is going to hate that."
