/tg/ what is your experience with games being placed in a setting based on a tv show/anime/movie etc.
Does it depend on the dm? the players?
Does it depend on the system?
What other factors would go along with a campaign based on this principle.
My friend wants to run a campaign in pic related, but I feel it will be more of a one shot rather than a campaign.
Playing in a game based on a cartoon tv show. I think it depends largely on both, but a lot on the DM to understand the source material, the system and how to properly translate it to a tabletop game format.
The system is also obviously important, but a good DM can work with most any system presented to them. As for other factors, I think it helps if everyone is at least a little familiar with the source material. Probably one of the biggest things though, is the consideration of the canon material. The DM on their own or with the players, need to decide how closely the game follows the source material, and how (if at all) the canon will play into the game.
Is it a game that follows the canon plot but with different characters? Does it take place concurrently with the canon and the real characters are present but not the focus? Does it simply use the setting as a framework, and the canon and real characters are either abandoned completely or simply exist "someplace else"? These are important questions.

To that first point, it can be a major help to have a wiki for the source material handy, to easily answer questions or confusion.
Alright /tg/. I just got done with a bizarre chapter-creation session with one of my Deathwatch players, and I honestly have no idea how something I expected to be a semi-generic Ultramarines successor turned so bizarre. I need to explain to you how a bunch of smurfs were turned into a group of crazed, mask-wearing woodsmen who believe the Emperor is, quite literally, a tree.

Rolls for this chapter were weird. I was basically looking to help the player create a mostly codex-compliant chapter that would give him some broad spectrum guidelines/advice to follow in fighting (he's new to the tactical combat stuff of the 40k rpgs) while still allowing him to find his own path. To that end, I told him I'd be willing to allow him to generate a new chapter and set up its lore on the condition they were Ultramarines successors, mostly codex compliant, and I had the usual (but rarely-used)...

So the time came to roll for the chapter's homeworld, which would be a rather big deal due to their status as a standing force specifically created to protect said area. It came up as a Jungle Hive world they had distant rule of, so the player decided the marines would live out in isolated compounds away from the hives, recruiting from the madmen who lived in and around the lower levels of the hive, which were being overrun by plants and jungle beasts. Things seemed like they might've strayed back towards normal as the player rolled and found that despite the genetic oddities, the chapter was codex-compliant and they kept the Ultra's solo ability. But then he rolled up that his chapter had a special cult (rolling that as getting both the Chapter Cult and Esoteric traits), mounted beasts, and the weird combination of Friend: Administratum, Enemy: Chaos Space Marines, and Xenos Bane skill upgrade tables.
Even stranger was when I had him roll for chapter strength. I told him that due to some plot ideas and that the chapter was young, they would be at proper fighting strength but he could roll to get over-strength.
I swear to you, he rolled a 2 and then three 1s in a row.
Now, at this point, neither of us really knew how we were going to make half of this shit work, but fuck if we were gonna just reroll like pussies. I told him that we were going to say that the chapter was nearly wiped out, but they'd recovered numbers by recruiting the locals en-mass and not putting as much focus on the quality. It was at that point we began to put together coherent lore and the descent into tree-worshipping space marines began.
would a trading card game WITHOUT shuffling work?
like, you not only build your deck, but you also decide the order of cards that you will draw over the whole game from start to beginning.
Play Dominion, and you will see exactly how it works.
It'd need a huge amount of counterplay and response.
Like, I'd almost see it being better for each player to just lay out their cards on the table rather than bothering with a deck to a predetermined amount.
So each player can set down any three cards, for example, and then take turns revealing them and resolving their effects. So player one might play an attack, but then player two set a counter to that attack for his card, so on and so forth.
Problem with the system is that it's massively about guessing your opponents actions which means you need defined actions and order to make it work(otherwise you're basically laying down cards blind), and the deck options need to be limited in order for the system to work.
And even then, I think you're losing complexity with this idea, because you can only have so many play/counter play style workings without it getting so complicated that it's no longer possible to read your opponent.

Whats a good scifi rpg kinda like the EVE universe. I also really wanted to try Battletech but the book requires that you also play the table top if you want to include mechs which I guess isn't a problem but if you put a mech on the cover the cocktease that gives a player is off putting

Yes, Battletech is for playing the time between missions. It's really just for that universe.
Use Fate. It's easy and quick, and produces fantastic stories. Buy a scifi setting if you want, there's a bunch.

Mass Effect is actually a really good scifi universe, if you don't mind aliums. Lots of background material, lots of unexplored space to make your own material in.

OPM is literally just a game of Wild Talents where everyone except for one of the players is new to the system.
Well it'd be fun if we could actually fucking play it and not spend time creating a chart just to look at.
The big thing is that there's a PR/expenses maintenance thing alongside your actual battles, and that every battle should be on a timer (that can be increased or decreased) until OPM arrives, defeats the monster, and gets the credit.

So lately I've been interested in the Fusion off the psionic power list. I play a wizard and have no way of obtaining it on my own.
I was wondering if anyone knew a way I could get access to it. I was thinking maybe using Wish for a template that provides psi-like abilities, but I can't think of any that give access to Fusion. I was also maybe thinking about using the wish to ask for an item that can manifest Fusion, but preferably I'd like to have it as an innate ability.

It's subject to DM approval, but I thought there were suggestions in the DMG about researching original spells. You could either research it (or Wish for it) as an appropriately leveled spell.

No, it doesn't, since it's not a spell. It is a power. Powers can't be duplicated by Wish by default at all.
However, there is a hypothetical solution for OP anyway, without involving "the DM let me use Wish". You can probably use the Chameleon Crafting Archivist to get Fusion onto the divine spell list. From there, you can figure out how to shuffle it over to the...

The magnificent bastard. A villain who you end up rooting for, not because "evil is cool" but because they're interesting, intelligent, maybe even justified or respectable, and not the cut and dry bad guy you'd expect.

Date: 200 ABO, Year of the Shield, October 17th
Location: Imperial Capitol City of Letherdorn, Palace District
After landing in Letherdorn, you were greeted by the Royal Guard. The took you and Holly directly from the Zeppelin to the Imperial Palace. Apparently the Fylkir wants to meet with you. In privet.
The tale of you causing the Telvish retreat has spread like wild fire. Holly, sadly, is not brought with you, but she tells you that she is going to track down her parents and have a messenger find you. She gave you a kiss on the cheek before departing.
Before her leaving, your noticed something strange, on her chest, between her breasts, there was a strange green glow. You are not sure how you might investigate this.
That aside
The Imperial Palace is every bit as massive as it looks. You are currently in some sort of meeting you, which has a chair built specially for you. You sit in it, waiting. On the table in front of you is a small black book with an 'F' on it, a bottle of extremely fancy wine, with two glasses, and a large throne like chair. At the doorway, two high ranking Royal Guards stand. You can feel their eyes on you. They are armed with strange glowing weapons, made of a materiel you cannot identify.
They appear to be lax, but the moment the door opens the stand at attention. A young man walks in, with messy grey hair, an eye patch, tanned skin, and a mechanical arm. His pointed ears stick out of his hair. He has a dead pan serious expression on his face. He motions for the guards to leave, and they do so without question.
He sits at the chair across from you, and takes the little black book, opening it, he writes something down.

"Gabriel." His voice is deeper than one of his age should be. "The savior of Kelvin. The ultimate war machine, they say." He taps his pen. "I have to say, you are quite the sight." He nods. "Why exactly did you chose to defend Kelvin? You could have just as easily done nothing. You had no stake in the cities fate... Or did you?"
Well, what do you say to the God King of the Imperium?

No game is better than a bad game, anon.
But don't despair, there's online games via Roll20 or IRC, sometimes available through our gamefinder threads.
There are also gamebooks and solo RPG modules and systems for if you really want to roll some dice and can't get anyone else lined up. (Which is a problem even for folks who have a regular group. Sometimes people don't show)
In addition, any one of the various GM emulators can make almost any non-solo RPG playable for one person.
