I never understand the hate that owlbears get. Why do most people think that they're far more ridiculous than any of the other monsters introduced by D&D?

Something that has always irked me and has never let me find comfortable a middle ground arises in combat when dealing with mechanical concepts; for the sake of this thread we will make an example of AC. I like to keep the players immersed to a degree that they should often find themselves forgetting that they are in fact playing a game. The game mechanics should stay wholly under the hood and in my opinion; they should never be brought to the surface. Hitpoints for example are something entirely under control of the GM and can be translated very well through descriptive communication but AC on the other hand is almost forced to be revealed in one way or another and in a way that bothers me.
Whenever the rolls are made and the hit confirmed, this piece of metagame knowledge is now there for the entirety of the encounter. The players roll their attack rolls and then the barrier is broken: did they hit? Where should it go from there? A simple "yes" to then allow them to narrate their attack (which is my preferred method), or something opposite that I abhor doing which would be narrating their own attack for them. Taking player control away strikes and rubs me the wrong way so I'd prefer not to do this but it does end the problem of a player breaking the metaphorical wall to ask "did I hit" when I can simply look at the roll of the dice and then narrate their swing or their shot.
Maybe I'm just a total sperg of a GM and there's something totally obvious I've overlooked. Which method do you lads prefer?

i think this kind of thing depends on how much the players trust you. and as far as what your looking for, the only thing i can think of off the top of my head is to roll there attacks for them behind a GM screen and have them narrate how there attacking. from there describe how the creature is hit or avoids the attack. but this of course creates a huge amount of problems. the only simple solution i can think of is maybe vary the AC of creatures depending on what there doing for example (probably not a very good...

Depends on character level. But troll battleragers always make me flinch after this one incident where we breezed through one encounter and the DM tried to throw something at us more challenging. We were level 5 or 6 and the previous encounter was a bunch of variant kobolds with flight and a weak breath weapon.
How do you feel about Wizards being the primary summoners in a game/setting?
I ask because I'm making my own game/setting where there are Wizards and blood mages. The blood mages mostly heal, but I think since sacrifices and rituals are pretty closely related to their thing, it might actually make a lot of sense to make them summoners too, to do stuff other then summon and heal.
Would you feel it would step on the Wizard's toes too much for a different class to be able to create and conjure minions? Do you think having this ability would make a mostly-healing...

I generally find summoning mechanics for table top games to bog things down a bit because your adding more players to the field who each have their own actions to carry out.

our dm for a 7 strong group can't make it tonight
we're all new, but i'm hosting and have the 2nd most experience (have tried to dm 1 game), so i'm taking over
nobody will want to reroll a whole new character, and it's too short notice for me to create my own campaign, but all the 5e dnd campaigns are an entire level of play, and our party is halfway through a 1-4 campaign.
do i try (and fail) to proceed with the old campaign, or do i try and run a new one?
has anyone else been in this kind of position?

Will your DM ever come back? I say go for it, DM'ing isn't that hard, but remember that it's hard t come back from being a DM.

I don't have the use copy paste of link but rest assure it's a fun genetic universal system, leading towards to Gamest side of the coin.
If fast high stakes quick and dirty battles and gripping tales of adventure! are your thing realism over detailed technical realism of say GURPS or or the meta collaborative mechanics fiction of FATE, then SW is for you, it's about two fists heroes doing daring do.

The whole D4-2 seems too penalising to me. I want ability stats to be useful outside just character creation.

Ability stats are definitely useful outside just character creation. Skills are mostly for certain specific actions and types of actions, so you usually don't actually use many skills outside of what you focused on. Moreover, they can always spend bennies on it if they really need that hit.
Keep in mind, there's always that 18% chance of them getting a 4-2, and then after the reroll, a 2 or higher in order to succeed in something they're completely terrible at.

I concur with op. Bad grouping in the sections. Things organized exhaustively and alphabetically, instead if say, thematically by game genre, or by generic setting.
It can be daunting to new players. Took me years to have a faithful understanding of the basics that didn't require blind flipping through the book.
For example: there is no pickpocket. There is filch, and holdout. Neither of which you would think of first, in general gaming nomenclature.
