I never understand the hate that owlbears get. Why do most people think that they're far more ridiculous than any of the other monsters introduced by D&D?

They've always been my favorite fantasy monster, so post your owlbears.

I've never seen owlbears get any hate.

They're super-iconic and most people love them, sometimes *because* they're ridiculous.

Also you'd be surprised how many non-D&D characters they share stats with! It's incredible, really.

I've been a pretty avid hiker for most of my life.

I live in Alberta and I've come across black bears, grizzly bears, moose, etc usually while alone.

Of all the animals I've come across the closest I came to getting my shit fucked up was a great horned owl.

I didn't know shit about owls, like most, I had dedicated my time to reading up on how to avoid getting my shit fucked up by bears and moose.

This owl followed me for ten minutes and swooped over me a few times.

I took a few pictures of it and generally didn't think anything of it other than 'that's cool.'

Turns out great horned owls are notorious for attacking people and they signal that by swooping overhead first. Then they land on your head, dig their 3 inch talons into your scalp/eyesockets and rip the fuck out of you and blind you.

Leaving you blind, 2 hours from your car in the winter in Alberta. Alone.

I'd be more scared of a giant owl than an owl/bear hybrid because, desu, the bear half basically makes the thing harmless.

Maybe because this is the first picture a lot of people saw of them.

>snakeeagle
I think you mean Quetzacoatl, or however you spell it, the flying sex snake god of the Aztec.

Also, we could just combine a billion different animals and make some interesting stuff.

It's a noCeratopsowlbear! (people kinda forget that Dinosaurs would likely have had some crazy ass plumage, like a mother fucking triceratops or T-Rex is gonna get any benefit from being camoflaged)

Octopii are too intelligent to be lumped in with owls, who are notoriously stupid despite pop legend.
>>
>>44471494

But imagine an owl that was as intelligent as an octopus.

DMs have a tendency to throw Owlbears at parties completely unprepared to fight them, and it either ends in the party running, getting wiped, or upon RARE occasion, hilarity.
