We're finalizing character sheets for a new 4e campaign tomorrow. I only have minor experience playing D&D before, and it was years ago using 3.5. We will have 4 people and I am filling the striker role.
My prospective character is a re-flavored blackguard paladin. I've played him in a couple test combat encounters and he does a fine job. Only thing is I'd love to be able to do something that wasn't furious strike every turn. Blackguards seem to get very little in the way of skill versatility. Is there some other class that would thematically fit with a charismatic, greatsword-wielding holy striker? I've attempted to hybridize with a few things in the character builder but I'm not really satisfied with the results. Most of the info I am able to find on hybrid blackgaurds involves executioner and that isn't going to fit my needs. The rest of the info says play twinstrike ranger instead. Also not happening. Anyone with experience on blackgaurds or class hybridization?
Anyone else playing 4e? What are your experiences? What characters have you played?
Ever comissioned art of your character?
>>44639989
Blackguard is an essentials class, so I can't help you there...
>Anyone else playing 4e?
Have played, continue to play occasionally.Well, run. Forever DM.
>What are your experiences?
Mixed, mostly due to the groups. My first 4e campaign was shit because 1. We had a huge group, 2. Half of them either didn't show up or didn't participate any given week, 3. There was one asshole that was sucking the DM's dick for ridiculous bonuses. High ability scores, unique weapons, all that bullshit.
After that group fell apart and I started DMing for the few not shitty players, my experiences have been quite good.
>What characters have you played?
Half-elf artificer that was dogshit. Got killed by the DM when I had to leave a session early. When I gave him forewarning.
A brawler fighter that had a pretty sparse backstory: Grew up in the woods, wrestled bears.
Female, teenaged human warlord. It was a 1st level campaign and not all that serious, so she was essentially a cheerleader.
Oh, and an unaligned human wizard that had some pretty questionable priorities, but was voted the party leader because everyone else was terrified of her. I was expecting the party paladin to rein her in a bit, honestly.
>Ever comissioned art of your character?
No, I draw my own shitty character art. I enjoy the personal touch.
>>44639989
>charismatic, greatsword wielding holy striker
Outside of Blackguards (which suck) 4e can give you three of those four things at a time (with one exception).
>Charismatic + greatsword-wielding + holy - striker
ordinary Paladin
>Charismatic + greatsword wielding - holy + striker
thaneborn barbarian, eldritch strike charisma-warlock
>Charismatic - greatsword wielding + holy + striker
Nothing, unfortunately
> - Charismatic + greatsword wielding + holy + striker
Avenger
A strength/charisma ordinary paladin can be built for damage, but can't reach striker-levels like a fighter can
>>44640173
Wouldn't the warlock be Charismatic - greatsword wielding + holy + striker?
And why is it your favorite? A friend of mine and I are interested in large scale fantasy battles and would like to try Warhammer.
From what I understand:
1-2ed is them hammering out the rules concerning a large amount of minis.
3rd edition edition places high importance on maneuvering with complex movement rules
4-5th edition have extremely powerful heroes which outweigh the importance of army units
6th edition nerfed heroes
7-8th edition placed a great deal of importance on battlefield magic
I enjoy the idea of tactical maneuvering of mass troops being important because in my mind it helps set this type of army-level game apart from skirmish games, so 3rd edition sounds most appealing to me.
What was your favorite, anon?
>>44635898
3rd was current when I started, and I've played every edition since. Though I don't think 8th is that bad if you've got a good gaming group (that won't force an arms race of min/maxing), my all-time favorite is 6th. I feel that GW made change for change's sake (and to push edition sales) even though they had very little to improve on.
>>44636096
What makes 6th your favorite?
>>44635898
I play it unironically, have fun, and it's my favorite edition. Bring on the hate.

Interview with Rick Priestley (creator of Warhammer and 40k.)
>Before he ever joined Games Workshop, Rick Priestley had developed a science fiction game.
>“It was called Rogue Trader,” he said.
>“It was a ship-based game, and I’d created a range of models to go with it. And even though I’d joined Games Workshop to answer the phone and put toy soldiers into cardboard boxes, it was always on the understanding that they’d eventually get round to producing this game.
>“But the reaction to Warhammer was so successful that everybody wanted to do a science fiction version. In fact, I’d been working on science fiction rules and variants in the journals we kept while we were working on the first edition, so the intent was there from very early on.”
>Priestley left Games Workshop in 2010, almost three decades after the release of the original Warhammer. He said he’d grown increasingly disillusioned with the direction the company was taking.
>“I was the head of the creative department, and they weren’t doing anything creative any more,” he said.
>“The role I had in the studio was with staff working on game development and design, and they’d pretty much decided that game development and design wasn’t of any interest to them. The current attitude in Games Workshop is that they’re not a games company, it’s that they’re a model company selling collectibles. That’s something I find wholly self-deceiving and couldn’t possibly agree with.”

Another interview. This time with Ian Livingstone (the founder of Games Workshop.)
>>44620535
>“We were desperate not to let Gygax know that we were running the company from our flat,” Livingstone said.
>“But what we didn’t know at the time was that he was publishing Dungeons & Dragons from his flat as well. Both parties were assuming that the other was some big-time operation, but it was very much a fledgling industry at the time.”
Based Priestly telling it like it is.

Nope. We decided we wouldn't enforce it at club level. I'm not a competitive player, I'm not concerned about this.
/tg/, I come in need of your expertise with weird shit.
I'm running a game set in the age of sail, where the players are basically conquistadors. While there will be gold, I don't want it to be a normal game where most loot is coins and gems. The New World(and the East, but earlier) provided many new materials to us in real life. I would like to mimic this, by giving the players strange plants, animals, gems, and metals as loot.
Get your creativity hats, I want every weird idea you have. Magic is limited, but present. Strange properties that seem -somewhat- plausible are preferable.
spices, especially pepper
gold would be in dust or nugget form initially, having been panned from rivers
drugs such as opium, tobacco or coca
novel food crops like the humble potato
slaves
pearls
tropical hardwoods
cocoa
later on it was mined silver or gold, or cash crops like sugar, cotton, indigo or rice.
sugar was often turned into molasses for transport by ship. rum was another trade good.
basically the ability to grow things all year round makes the land worth something anyway.
>>44678586
Don't forget gold leaf.
>>44678403
Well, you could give them things like Corn and Squash but they'll probably glance over it, not realizing it's world changing potential just like every explorer IRL did.
You regain consciousness to find yourself in a landscape of perpetual white.
As far as the eye can see, there’s nothing around you save for the ethereal horizon of dense fog and mist. The only thing you’re sure of is the feeling of moist soil underneath your feet, as the wet earth seeps between the gaps of your toes and sinks beneath your weight.
You try sticking a hand out in front of you. Turns out that trying to see anything beyond two-and-a-half feet is completely pointless. The fog is thick enough for you to slice with a knife, if you had one. Perhaps it’s best not to wander about aimlessly-
“You’ve returned to see me…”
The feeling of someone embracing you from behind catches you off guard, as does the breathy whisper in your ear. There are two very noticeable bulges that are pressing into your back, and the sweet fragrance of hyacinth flowers threatens to overwhelm your senses.
“Many have come to visit me in their waking dreams…” You hear a soft voice murmur as the presence traces a finger along your chest. At least, that’s what it feels like; you can’t see anything at all touching your chest whatsoever. A phantom sensation. “…there are those that forget…and those that choose not to return… you alone are the only one to ever come back…”

“How do you not have to pay?!” Diana pulls away from the payment screen and eyes you suspiciously behind her glasses.
“That’s not how it is for everyone?” You click through the many options on the screen, trying to remember what Luca showed you the other day.
“No, that’s not how it is for everyone…” Diana nudges you aside and begins rapidly adding items. Soon enough both of your meals are accounted for, likely thanks to the Vice Admiral. “There. Now we’re both done.”
“You’re welcome.” You call out as the two of you move to find a spot to eat.
She settles in the seat across from you. “That’s only a microscopic drop in the bucket of what I lost because of you.”
Here we go again with that.
“Just how much did you lose in that bet anyway?” You eye her tray and note that she mostly loaded up on dessert.
“Six thousand SC.” She brandishes an accusatory spoon at you. “But that’s nothing compared to the blow to my pride.” Her spoon swings back to dig into a piece of crumbly cake.
With much effort, you manage to ignore her ridiculous comment about the money. “So, you designed the latest model or something like that?” You begin to work at your plate of food as well.
"It was when I first got here.” She informs you with a mouthful of food. “I was part of a team.” She swallows. “Our job was only to investigate possible upgrades for the components, but within three months I had completely replaced their shameful design model and collaborated with outside teams to fully prepare all the other software aspects.”
You immediately stop eating. “Wouldn’t that have made you really rich?”
[1/2]
>>44673297
Diana moves her mouth around slowly as if considering what to say next before finally smiling slightly. “It doesn’t work like that.” She politely explains. “Not to mention the fact that I was only an intern, and that all the work I did was unauthorized.” She idly scrapes at the side of her cake. “As soon as my advisor found out what I was doing they took away all my work, and they kicked me out of the program. A month later they unveiled the new model.” She shrugs and promptly returns to eating. “That’s how it goes.” She smiles with a few crumbs at the corner of her mouth.
The more she told you, the more you felt your chest tighten in reaction.
“You aren’t angry about that?” You lean forward, voice full of incredulity. “Not only did they screw you out of the reward, but they completely cut you off from all of your work. Then they had the fucking gull to toss you aside!”
She looks up at you, a little confused, and you suddenly notice that in some point in your questioning you had risen to your feet.

“I was more upset at the time.” She watches as you sit back down. “But time went on. Phil recommended me for the job I have now right after that, and there’s loads of people that know the truth, yourself included.”
Her words really took the wind out of your sails. “Still…” You stare down at your food.
“I loved working with frames since I was a kid, it’s was pretty much the only thing did, so what I’m doing now is way more preferable.” She leans down to catch your eyes. “Plus if you really cared, you shouldn’t have brought that outdated fire hazard in the first place.”
You can’t help but laugh with her. How much would a new Assistant set you back anyway?
“Enough about that.” She leans back. “Phil told me that you were from Pweeg.” She announces eagerly. “So what’s it like? I always pictured the outer planets to be rugged places with extreme nature completely surrounding you. A great place to test out a frame.”
Whenever you try to think of the place all you can picture is that enormous polluted slum you used to live in, or stench of tons of rotting fish that you had to endure nearly every day. Well, you know your thoughts on the place, but should you share them as they are?
“It’s Peugue, and rugged isn’t too far off.”
“It’s Peugue, and it's a shithole.”

Look at this shitty map, you like this shitty map? If yes we're gonna have a good time, if no well then sorry I'm not that good at drawing. Anyways, this here is a game. It's a fun little grand strategy-esk game here, so anon's pick a country you want to guide through history.
Introductions aside here's the rules:
Each turn is 10 years.
You can pick a direction to expand.
You can declare war on any country you can reach.
There will be rolls to determine how well your conquests can go.
There will be events that happen to your country and you will need to give solutions.
Said solutions do not need to make sense, but if they do they're more likely to succeed.
Bonus points for funny yet logical solutions.
Feel free to ask questions about your country in question and how its doing, you might just learn something.
Flumine.

Any relatively cheap yet popular wargames? Basically poor mans Warhammer (either fantasy or 40k) is what I'm looking for.
>>44672315
Define poor. Like $50-$100? Lower? Higher?
>>44672315
Look for games with low model counts. Part of Warhammer's high cost is the high number of models being fielded.
Just buy the cheapest model and have them hold up tiny paper signs saying what unit they are along with a notecard with all the stats taped onto the bottom.

Tell me about your Chinese-inspired campaign/setting, /tg/.
Currently on and off working on custom loresheets for a LoTW game I may be running. Debating if I want to run something open sandboxy based off my fun times from Age of Wushu, or if I want to run something a little more short campaigny by ripping off Five Deadly Venoms.
>>44671741
I've never read any good Chinese fantasy. It all suffers from Dragonball-tier power level inflation or worse.
>>44676326
I've never read any, but I watched the first Condor Heroes. The MC does power up as fast as a shonen hero, but he never actually becomes stronger than any of the elders, and the bar is established about halfway through.
I do agree it wasn't really that good, though. I liked the characters and the setting, and it had a bunch of great moments, but overall it was pretty directionless.
