I don't know how it is in America but getting SRS in the UK doesn't instantly change your legal sex. You have to apply for a GRC and can do so before getting SRS.
I'm post-op but still "legally" male according to my birth certificate (gender marker on other things like passport can be changed regardless of your legal sex) because I haven't...
