It's about the same cost as an AK, which is really the only pertinent competitor. Personally the SKS is cooler just cause it looks cool and buying anything more than a carry and home defense gun for their combat capabilities is for tacticool faggots.

I'm kind of worried about future trouble t.bh. Not the first time I've had trouble with blacks, they're always aggressive and looking for trouble.

Tactical is a marketing term. It means nothing when applied to gear and is generally only used ironically here.
My only boot experience is boots meant for construction, and for that I've found that you want to spend at least $100 to get something you can wear all day. Currently I'm wearing some square-tip steeltoe Justins, they've held up quite well for just over a year.
If you don't get boots that are specifically designed to be waterproof then you can just spray them with some off-the-shelf product. If you get leather then rub them down with some neatsfoot oil.
