Hullo everyone! Hope you guys are having a chill holiday season and staying safe from this damned weather.
So I've had this dumb dream to write my own graphic novel, a natural evolution for anyone who read a shit ton of comics throughout their life. Straight to the point: can't afford to hire an illustrator and I can't draw so fuck it, the only option is to learn to draw so here I am. Read through a few Loomis books but it's clicking in my mind. Watched a few videos from established comic artists who said they learned through imitation. They'd keep resource files of how different artists drew things like cars, trench coats, hair, etc. Literally anything and used those as reference for drawing.
So I've picked a few artists whose work I really enjoy and I'm going to start to studies of how they draw stuff (i.e. eye studies, arm, legs, noses, etc., etc.). Anyone learn to draw this way as opposed to reading books and studying anatomy for 10 years? Any thoughts on this method? In regards to my experience I paint a good bit, took 4 years of high school that really didn't teach me too much, but I can look at any image and basically freehand copy it with pretty good accuracy but that doesn't do shit for me when I wanna draw something straight outta my head. Pros, cons, or anything constructive in general for a fresh artist is very much welcome and appreciated!
Pic related: Francis Manapul's Flash, an artist who is working on the New 52 Flash. Really like his style and he's one of the artist I'm going to study.
TL;DR - Trying to learn to draw via imitation of other artists' work to create my own style as opposed to reading books and practicing the "conventional" way.
TL;DR go fuck yourself
Appreciate the helpful comment. Never thought of it that way. I think I'm gonna try and implement that technique into my next drawing session.

fuck off and read the sticky
Freshmanfag who got an artwork selected as finalist for a competition. Tbh I think that my drawing is kind of crap but I guess very few people joined the contest. I need people to vote for me online to go to round 3. Should I messge high school teachers and high school peers who I've lost contact and ask them to vote for me?
No, thats voting for you and not your art, if people really do like your art people will vote for you, if you don't go to round 3 than learn from your mistakes and improve
>>2331258
But all the other artists will be doing the same.
>>2331260
If everyone starts sucking their dads dick, would you?
Just kidding, look muchacho, dont let some random anon such as myself tell you what to do, if you feel the need to ask someone to help you win a competition, by all means, go ahead.

Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studies & getting critique.
>Thread study: Useless question do we really need this? People just try to draw/paint the opening and any other following images. Literally no reason to have an OP image by this logic.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I especially recommend the last one as it it similar to rendering a cube and should be a gateway to actual architecture.
here's a welding helmet i'm painting. i decided to go with an akira theme. this is the front.
i'll put the capsule logo on the sides.
>>2329029
neat
stencil on that logo though or it might come out like shit
>>2329064
there's no way to make a stencil that size. i made a circle stencil for the top and bottom borders of the text but beyond that i'll have to eyeball it
Alchemic fuckery or consummate skill?

Any of you guys use one of these glove things to stop smudges?
Not really, I think it's better to put a paper over a paper
what is this anime dress bullshit?
I use one of those. It makes a world of a difference with a cintiq. Back when I was using an intuos I didn't really need it because the surface didn't really get sticky.
I could work without it if I really had to but it would be a pain in the ass.
I have a question for you guys interested in / working in animation.
I'm someone who is facing a crisis because he's realizing that his favorite forms of art (literature, especially poetry) are fucking dead. I've been paralyzed over the past few days and even took up garbage such as video games again because I feel powerless -- nobody will ever care about high literature ever again. Nobody hardly cares about film anymore, and theatre/film in the tradition of Welles or Fassbinder was my second option. I even have screenplays/poems ready to send out to magazines / cheap script vendors and I've just lost the will to do it.
Cutting the crap: when I was about fifteen or sixteen I wanted to be an animator after watching some Bakshi films. Unfortunately by 17 I got more into literature and poetry, and stopped drawing entirely. I see animation as a way back into relevancy, and I would love to imbue some projects with inspiration from actual literature / poetry. For example, a short animated rendition of some of Joyce's Dubliners stories or an animated spoof of Sidney's Astrophil and Stella sonnet sequence. I think it could be neat and cute.
I'm not starting from the ground zero pits, but I'm not exactly on ground level either. I'm rereading/restudying loomis for the first time in 3 years. I'm turning 20 in a few days, and I want to, by then, have some idea what I want to be in life.
Okay I'm just depressed and maudlin, so excuse all that crap, but if I work a clean 30 hours a week on intense studies for a few years, and then transition to animation, will I be walking into a situation where I can actually have a shot at producing some actual animated series or shorts that might draw any attention? What is the job market like right now? Is this a garbage idea? Is there any room for any actually inspired animation anymore? Is it all commercialized?
Pic related, not a good show but I love the art I suppose.

continued:
this is the first thing I drew last week before finals hit and I had to draw my attention away (whewww!) for a while to pass my classes. Awful awful awful study of ezra pound. So when I say I'm not a total beginner, I at least understand that I've got to work on the fundamentals, and I know where to start. I just haven't started.
So maybe I am on ground zero.
Anyways, questions in the OP still stand.

continued:
another of my first study sessions again. I really have no idea where to go forward. I'm reading loomis and constructing all the heads and bodies like crazy but I don't see much of a path yet.
Final post from OP in the rant until someone else posts. Sorry if this should have all gone into a beginner thread.
>>2325222
I sent you files 3 weeks ago and you haven't changed anything. Stop being a aspy fucking retard and work on your stuff.
I really can't read Loomis. Fun with a pencil is fucking bullshit for 8 year old kids. And the eye of the painter is a fucking long rant about shit that isn't teaching me how to draw.
Did i get the wrong books? What the fuck do you mean "practice loomis" the guy isnt teaching art at all.
Yes im mad
>>2324197
I wish I was b8ing but I really want advice on which Loomis book to read or what to do. I'm desperate for some good instruction.

What are the best books to look into in figuring out ways to better train your eye to see the construction of work?

lmaoing at your life
I'm not lying when I say this, but this how to draw manga book really helps. It's not like the ones you find at a Miachel's and I have no idea who made it but if you wanna at least get to know more about bodies then this helps. After that maybe try making your own art style or something.
>>2332798
>I'm not lying when I say this, but this how to draw manga book really helps
Yeah, right.
I made this thing of paper. Please comment.
>>2332548
Orgamist here lose the tape and learn to seal joints using just bent paper. /po/ can help you.
But it's some basic shit, lrn2papercraft.
Help me improve, /ic/. Also traditional medium work thread.
Well you put a lot work in his face, but his hair is just a big black spot and his upper torso a grey one. Not much done there. So i recommend adding in a little more detail in the entire picture. Try not to focus solely on one thing in a picture, because that makes the rest of the picture seem unfinished.

*painting not picture sorry

I'll keep that in mind in the future, thank you!
Hi guys. Its time for me to buy a new computer screen. I have 2 major problems with that, namely:
1. I'm a poorfag (budget ends at about 250$)
2. I know shit about computer screens.
I'm asking you, /ic/, because (obviously) Im doing my best to become a digital artist and I need my screen to be good for drawing - nice contrast, nice blacks with prefferable matte (or not? I might be wrong).
Please help me out, artfriends.
>>2332493
I have one of those http://www.amazon.co.uk/AOC-I2269VWM-Monitor-Display-Speakers/dp/B00BDBVCCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451483973&sr=8-1&keywords=aoc+21.5
cheap and good. I am thinking about buying 2 more, one as a second monitor at home, and one for work so that I don't have to carry anymore the one I already have between home and work
>>2332493
at that price range there's only garbage. no need to worry too much. Get some shit monitor, improve your art for 2-3 years, then get a new one in the 600$ range.

good screen, good colors, ips, cheap and i use it so its okay, you're probably not a good artist yet, when that happens get a benQ monitor. /g/ out.
