I have a burning passion to start drawing for many years now, especially comic art. But I have no idea where to start,I appreciate art for what it is and adore it for that, but I feel a need to create and add to that vast spectrum of creativity. So please if at all willing consider to explain to some schmuck with big dreams and nothing to show for it how to start

I think she'll think it's cute and like it because you made it for her.
>>
>>2328601
>I think she'll think
So you think it's garbage huh
Should I scrap it and start over
>>
>>2328603
If you want. It's not great but it's not garbage. It just looks a little kiddish. For example there's a lot of empty space on his chest and on the base. Try making the base smaller and making the mushroom bigger or even adding 2 more mushrooms of varying sizes.
Starting over might be a good idea actually, personally whenever I start over on something my second one is always, always way better. Good luck!

Thoughts?

What skill level do you guys believe is needed for getting Magic or Dnd work? Obviously there are some decent artists working for wizards, but there are many questionable ones as well.
Do you believe sending mails to their artdrop with a good portfolio is the way to go, or is chasing an AD's ass more important / would you say connections matter much?
What is /ic's opinion on WoTC paid work?

You need to be pretty good. There's a reason it's considered a benchmark/goal for fantasy artists.

That said, there does seem to be a shift in the last few years towards a homogenous photographic look to their art, and it seems that now that aesthetic is more important than genuine artistry and style.

Also sure there are some weak images they print, but on the whole the average quality is still fairly high. Considering they pump out thousands of images it's not a surprise there are a couple duds, especially since some of their briefs can be rather limiting or stupid. They pay better than most other fantasy illustration gigs and they get better quality work in return.

What the heck lol

Most artists have realized that next to nobody will ever look at the art zoomed in like this, so they half ass anything that can't be seen in real life. Apparently as long as the thumbnail is ok Wizards will not care anymore. Or maybe they never did and I'm just noticing this now.

I really like art, I do. I think it's a great medium that takes both technical and creative skill to succeed in. But I don't think it has ever stacked up to writing in terms of an art form. I feel like writers can do essentially everything an artist can through his work, and more.

A good writer can easily create a world in your head that you yourself conceptualize through his texts, and then he can expand on it so much more than an artist ever could. He can create a character to a higher degree than an artist. I noticed also that the greatest artists that ever lived - their works have inspired people, but never to the degree that a great writer can. It's mostly coveted by pretentious people, but books can shape people's entire lives.

It's too bad I'm a shit writer, I might have undertaken writing instead. I absolutely envy them.

What do you think?

nope

I wouldn't consider myself a skilled writer compared to many, but it's a very different sensation to draw something than write about it.

To frame my own experience, most of my experience with writing and storybuilding was DMing tabletop RPGs online. There was tons of writing and worldbuilding involved, though. Yet as vividly detailed as I could make it, I constantly lamented that I couldn't create a good visual representation. It's part of why I started getting into art.

The grass is always greener, I suppose. But there's a reason the likes of Tolkien also dabbled in art.

but OP, if you care for writing so much, why don't you write yourself.

How do you guys make progress? How long does it take to do so and what techniques do you use? I feel as if I am going too slow in progress and that's why I need to know your strategies. Pic related: Very shitty art I made.

>How long does it take to do so

Literally until the day you die or quit art. Nobody just "gits gud" and stops, art is often a constant progression (and it's not always an objectively upward trend).

Composition and color wise I actually like your picture, OP. Zoomed in it's a little rough but it's a nice thumbnail.

Anyway, as general goals to maximize improvement, it's probably nothing you haven't heard before - identify your weak points (either through being reflective and self critical or by getting critiqued by others), and then study those things with books, tutorials, actual studies, etc. Rinse and repeat.
Draw regularly, get that mileage, and remember to do things for fun sometimes too. Even your fun drawings can be done with an idea of improving something. But go into a drawing with an idea of what you want to learn, and try to keep it precise enough that you can keep it in mind as you go.
The idea is to be conscious of your goals and actively stride for them. "Just drawing" will get you half way, for the other half you need deliberate study.

Additionally, make sure you hang onto your old drawings. What I do is arrange them monthly, and at the end of each month I put copy one or two of my favorite drawings for each month into a general folder. Comparing my favorites of a few months ago to my favorites of today can usually be enlightening.

Also just to nip this in the bud, inb4 sakimichan/kr0n/other comfort zone artists, you know what I mean and even those artists change little things here and there or polish their workflow.

three months in hit my first slump. the magic of realizing you must draw what there is not what you think there is is wearing off. Is this natural? If i keep grinding out sketches from life and studying the masters will i get better ( i understand this is probably all you can tell me to do but this is frustrating)

Hello there /ic/, first of all as someone who doesnt celebrate christmas, happy holidays!I hope you had tons of satisfying food and laughs with your loved ones.Its around 4 am over here, i am, as usual, sipping my tea and studying on my midnight anatomy run when a question came up to my mind.I wonder what other beverages people enjoy consuming while working.So, in order, if you are intrested the questions are;

-Do you drink anything while you work? If so what is it?

-How do you like your said beverage?

-How long does it take you to down a cup/glass/can and how much you drink?

-Do you think drinking hinders your ability to concentrate? If so, why?

Tea or coke,water .

depends on the Tea.

depends on how concentrated i work.

no being well hydrated is good for staying productiv.
>>
OP here, silly me i forgot to give my own answers.

-I tend to drink dark tea while i work

-I like it warm but not boiling

-It takes around 20 minutes per cup and i tend to drink around 3 cups, with 30 minute breaks with each cup

-I actually think rapid consumption really hinders my ability as i start becoming hyper-active.
>>
>>2327113
Usually I stick with black coffee, or if I'm dehydrated I'll drink water. I don't think what you drink really has an impact on your art unless there is alcohol or if you are not used to large amounts of caffeine or something. Half the time when you get really into a painting you forget you even have a drink by your side and don't end up finishing it.
