it seems to be working for me, draw from life, draw shapes, draw everything. and do it every day for several hours(i try to do 8 every day) i looked at my work from when i started or even like last year and where i am at now and its much better in the case of when i first started way fucking better.. so yeah just draw, but do it in the right ways.
Worked for me.

as for gitting gud, I did get (at least) a bit better than I used to, but deep inside I doubt I'll ever reach that level of drawing I want to achieve

It's called Dunning Kruger Snydrome. Just keep working on your art and in a few years, when you look back at those "Sargent-tier" paintings from highschool, you will cringe and have a nice laugh.

not sure what board to post this on, but here goes. ive been coloring manga for years for my own benefit and i feel ive gotten a good grasp on digital painting through doing so. most of what i do though ends up looking smooth and glossy and thats not always the best look. i want it to look more like a scanlated manga, pic related. but i cant figure out how to create that pixelization. closest ive gotten is the hurl noise filter in gimp, desaturated and put on soft light above all the color layers. but that doesnt cause any hue change, only brightness and saturation so its only...

Once I could draw kind of like that (not so much detailed muscles since it's not my dope, but realistic anatomy done right) but since I'm trying to do things academically well with the gesture, simplifying shapes and all I'm having a hard time to get to the finished result.

just a quick PSA: Flip note studio 3d was released for free on the 3ds in europe today.
for anyone who doesn't know, flipnote is a flip book style animation software for the 3ds that was announced in 2011 and has only since been released in japan until today.
i've been playing around with it and i'm pretty sure it's my favourite, most accessible tool for learning and practicing frame by frame animation. (i also own a cintiq 13hd and have lots of experience animating in flash and photoshop)
tip: you can use a mechanical pencil as a stylus to make drawing more comfortable, just make sure you have a screen protector on
