Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 (Cross-thread) → →

Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Why is it so hard to draw from imagination?

I've been drawing heads from reference for about a month now and made really solid progress. Tonight I tried to draw a friend's face from memory, it took me like 15 minutes and it came out horrible.
>>
>>2464417
We process faces both separately and differently than other objects anon. Try drawing your friend several times over a couple of weeks with reference and try again from imagination shortly after each time.
>>
>>2464424
Makes sense. Thanks.!

Anyone else have a deformed head and how has it affected how you draw? Also should I shave my beard so I can better see the underlying shape of the jaw? I keep a beard because it hides the asymmetry of my face after my accident but I feel like it makes seeing the form of the jaw difficult.

oh and I'm not gay, and would never consider going gay, not even in college. I don't get the slightest bit of excitement from seeing naked males and avoid male photos in the reference thread like the plague, it's disgusting.

"You don't need to draw from life" - Feng Zhu

Why is drawing from life (I mean drawing from life as accurate as possible, with a lot of measuring, cast/bargue drawings etc, like many artists advocate) so overrated as a way of learning, /ic/? Why go so far to learn? Everywhere on internet, people do studies of quick gestures, hands, perspective, construction, anatomy, personal work etc. They don't do a full rendered still life, the ones who do, end up with bad habits when they try to draw without reference or get bored of trying to be human photocopier. Still, there are people who advocate as the best thing in the world, what the fuck?
37 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
I'm sure this could be a pointless thread of one school of thought vs another.

But I'll just say that Feng Zhu has natural born talent and can translate his mind on to paper much easier than most people.
>>
>>2467076

the best way to learn to draw is to do everything. Holistic learning is undeniably the most effective route to true mastery. If you aspire to be a great artist then you shouldn't just read one book on perspective. you should every published thing on perspective you can. same goes for anatomy etc. the same goes for drawing techniques (life, reference, imagination), they all have different feels, different strengths and weaknesses. Included all the different mediums you could possibly render or work in and you have a lot of work to do. Don't fall into the trap that most people do of worrying about it. Drawing from life definitely has its merits. If you can do it. Then do it. If you really can't you aren't going to fail, you just won't be as good as you could be.

Cause it gives you an idea of how things are constructed anatomically.
You don't have to solely dedicate yourself to drawing from life, but it's recommended to expand your knowledge and skill of human anatomy.
Of course, there are always exceptions.
If you're going for a stylized work, then yeah, by all means, go nuts.
In the end I think it really just is a question of personal preference, and how creative and knowledgeable you are as an artist.

(Also, regarding Feng Zhu: don't most of the students that go there end up having drawings that look like one another's?)

Are Copic markers worth it or just overhyped?
I bought a Copic ciao marker in black and fell in love with the big brush tip. Is there any cheaper alternatives to these markers?
13 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Copics are nice if you have the money to splurge, but shinhan touch markers are a good cheaper alternative
I've heard good things about the windsor newton markers, but I think they might be even more expensive
>>
>>2462723
Damn, those Windsor Newton ones would have been perfect but they don't ship to Finland....
>>
>>2462717
depends on your budget honestly. As I have grown up, I realize things aren't really that expensive anymore, and there are plenty of other things that are more painful to pay for: going out for dinner, data plans, plane tickets, car repairs, home repairs, etc. The cost of markers is in the noise of my yearly expenses.

If you like drawing traditionally, markers are a clean, atomic way of adding values to your drawings with nice discrete color selections. When I bought mine, I had worked my way from
>pencil
>pen
>brush pen
>cool gray scale prismas
>warm gray scale prismas
>used copics off ebay

I've been happy with them, although now I have digital needs because at the end of the day the markers were too much overhead for me to learn about color and value. Digital is just much faster and more forgiving.

Needs more loomis, face looks too Asian, unless that was what you were going for.
Perspective is fucked, no one stands around like that, completely boring pose in contrast with the background. Looks like you just dragged a guy in front of a photo.
The water waves look weird and have too much detail so they draw too much attention.
You should've gone for one boat instead of many, right now it looks like a clusterfuck, but one or two boats would've been a better atmosphere

>I hope the comments won't be filled realist artist telling me how it's not realistic.
If this is real and not a troll thread, that outlook is a creative killer. The thing that makes anime cool is its ability to take reality and make it interesting. If you try to skip the foundation of reality, you'll never maximize the exciting look and feel you can get from anime or any stylization. Anime is the whole reason I started drawing and I used to be stubborn about learning classical drawing but I did and in the end I'm glad because now I can draw things the way I want and invent my own stylization using anime as an influence rather than relying on copying someone else's stylistic choices. Don't limit yourself by focusing on style, focus on learning to draw properly and the doors will open.

I don't hear anyone crying Salvador. He has a point, there is a shit ton of gesture teachers and tools out there, but when it comes to enviro, its rare. I would kill for a tool like Pixel Lovley or Daily reference where instead of models for gesture it just scrolled through High def environments every 30 minutes. There really is a big imbalance when it comes to that, alot of channels on youtube tell how to get smoother gesture, style, exct, but if you want information on enviroments, your best bet is watching FDZ or abstracting the information from composition lessons

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.
