I feel like this should be posted here. Too many newfags here wanting to be concept artists and having no idea what that means.

inb4 feng sucks, no one gives a shit about the feng conspiracies, he's been a successful professional for many years, I believe that makes his opinion more valuable than the average d/ic/k's.

how do you use the reference properly ?
i mean , in concept art i've seen alot of people using 3d models (pose-models) and tracing over them . I also saw alot of mangakas doing that in MangaStudio.
Unless i make a anatomy study , is it okey if i trace the pose with the condition to understand what i'm drawing ? I have the basics and a little bit of anatomy knowledge but it still kinda takes me a while to get the pose right and it's frustrating .
Can somebody explain how to use reference properly without the guilt feeling of cheating ?

Both concept artists and mangaka are bound to the need to create something fast on a consistent basis. They use the reference like that not because they can't draw it but because they don't have time to. Normally they are going to be able to draw them competently if they had the time to do it.

If you're in a position where you absolutely need to produce that piece fast in order to keep on living, then use whatever shortcut you need.

Just remember that you need to keep doing work. Just because you're using a shortcut doesn't mean you can always forgo learning it. And if you use this crutch long enough, you will hobble if you're not careful.

Best way to use reference is to study it anyway. Take an object you don't draw at all and figure out how you should, based on knowledge from other pieces you've done. Knowing how to draw a face helps you understand how to draw a gun, a vehicle, a space ship, aliens, and what have you. The principles are still the same.

Would anyone be interested in making a skype group for d/ic/ks?

Been in some before but they're now dissolved. Mainly looking to generate some feedback and learn between each other, perhaps even make some friends.

Skill level doesn't really matter, just a willingness to improve. If interested post your skype in this thread.

tried it once, everyone that joined was a fucking faggot afraid to speak their mind, so we didn't have anything to talk about, also, you either get mildly skilled people who feel too good to mingle with the plebs or complete noobs that have not the slightlest idea on how to improve, so that "improving togheter"is often times out of the way as well.

People here might tell you they want art friends, but it's not true, they want to latch onto someone accomplished and suck whatever they can from the experience, once they're in a group, it's always "oh no I'm shit huurrr i gotta be an hypocritical dick sucking faggot so they teach me" or "oh no they're shit hurrrr i can't learn anything from these retards", it's never "I'm going to help who I can and expect the same from people above me" or at the very least "I will try make friends of these people", they simply don't want to be there.

Anyhow, a multistream of people drawing while talking would be a better idea in my opinion, will keep everyone entertained and on topic.

This kind of art is made and enjoyed by superior human beings. Most of us just cannot comprehend the beauty and true meaning of this piece. We will never be able to understand and appreciate. I admire those who can. I wish I had the spark.

Other boards have recommended reading lists, and since there was a thread about it on /lit/ I started putting together one for /ic/. What other books does it need? I'm mostly thinking more books on painting.

One of the worst anatomy books ever

>Imaginative Realism

Otherwise not that bad, Hampton is babby tier and kind of a shit draughtsman so it's only worth reading if you aren't willing to put in the hours with heavier, but better material.

Replace with Richer, Vanderpoel, J.D Harding and Edgar Payne.

Just look at the pictures in the Bammes book. I included the Jeno Barcsay book because it has diagrams of the bones and muscles, is there a better book that does this? It's not bad, but the drawing is a bit eccentric. The Hampton book is excellent. I don't care for Loomis but I included them anyway.

>I'm mostly thinking more books on painting.
having a book lists for painting is not bad, but should not be the single one, others might hop in with focus on drawing, and they will start bashing on the list since it does't help them

It sucks. Better to work in a studio.

Freelancing is a nice little bonus or something to do between real gigs, but in my experience it's very hard to make a living at.

everything is fine until you try to live of your art, i have to work at a school for 3 days a week and 2 days at home in order to provide. other than that, it's great living like this

>says that setting up 3d objects and boxes in sketchup gives you perfect perspective every time. Also, the perspective tool in photoshop gives him gud results
What am I supposed to do /ic/? Drawing tons of perspective lines manually or doing it with 3d?

Both, bitch!!!
>>
>>2491478
what's important isn't how you get to something but whether you fundamentally understand why it works

the only reason to do things the hard way is to try to understand how something works at it's most basic levels; manual control from beginning to end ensures that you understand it through and through. If you already understand the subject, there would be no reason to not use perspective tools to save both time and effort. For example, you could manually go in and put texture in a digital painting with a small hard round brush or you could just make a fucking splatter brush and do the same job in a shorter amount of time. But, someone who doesn't know how to effectively place texture will be no better at using the splatter brush than using the round brush.
>>
>>2491482
why both? He said that 3d programs can quickly and easily transform any pixel into any perspective you want
