That Snyder's Lex Luthor behaving like The Joker wasn't intentional.
The entire point of the movie is to show that the Superman mythos belongs to no one and everyone at the same time. This is the historical baggage that Snyder is aware these characters carry: An endless barrage of fanboys and comics since the 30's, comparison to other iconic characters, and everyone thinking they have the last word on how these characters should and would act.
It compares Superman to Christ, Moby Dick, King Arthur, Zorro, JFK, etc. Batman is compared with Ahab and Charles F. Kane. It compares Doomsday with a fire spouting dragon, King Kong, a falling meteorite, a nuclear holocaust, the mythical Hydra, etc. So naturally it does the same with Lex (Zuckerberg). There are many comparisons with the Nolan trilogy. Because this film embraces it as part of the mythos too. For instance, the Batmobile scene ends up in him running into Superman, while in the Nolan version he decides to spare the Joker on his motorcycle. The Gotham football team's uniform is the same color in both films. Lois Lane and Rachel are dropped from a skyscraper.
It's a deconstruction and analysis of the characters themselves.
The film thrives on these types of associations, like the red Jolly Rancher pushed into the senator's mouth - "it's cherry" - coming back as the blood dripped onto Zod's face, the red graffiti on Superman's monument, and his slashed cheek, not to mention the nods to internet culture and memes. It's precisely this uncomfortable reevaluation and redemption of sugary pop imagery that drives the film. "Snyder intends to resolve the conflict between commerce and art," as Armond White notes. The basic thesis is that Superhero franchises are antithetical to what Superman actually stands for.
The fact that not a single character behaved the way fanboys expected just proves the point that all this was intentional.

It was a huge mistake: it alienated an older fanbase and lost a lot of world building and didnt gain new readers.
Almost every good new52 book could had been done in the all universe, and almost all shit was related to the reboot.
You don't destroy a castle to build little houe, sure the castle needed cleaning and wasnt being used, but is still better than the shitty house and had space for new characters.
DC biggest mistake was not create another earth and focus in that earth, that way the old chronology would be intact. Instead of that we have nigger wally, the batfamily destroyed, superman family destroyed, Johns destroyed the whole magic side of DC just for a short mini he never intended to continue, Lex luthor has being a leaguer for more issues than aquaman. Etc.

The Rebirth books are very clearly indicative of the fact that DC thinks so.
They're playing it safe across the board. Multiple books for popular heroes, books with unpopular creative teams replaced with ones they know people like (for instance Meredith Finch being replaced with Rucka on WW), bringing several New 52 changes back to status quo, and having no variety and sticking exclusively to popular cape heroes.
Say what you will about the New 52, but it at least had some variety in their books. Westerns, fantasy, horror. Ain't none of that here!
Question? Why do the Big 2 care about sales? I know as companies they would be profit driven, but look at the whole picture.
DC is part of Time Warner. Marvel is part of Disney. Both of those companies gain profits in the BILLIONS with the Marvel and DC IPs. DC and Marvel get sales in the thousands.
Look at Marvel , there BEST selling comic last year Star Wars #1, sold 1,073,027 at 4.99 retail, so thats a rough 5.4 million dollar gross.
And then look at a book they just cancelled Angela Queen of Hel, which sold 15,968 at 3.99 or a rough 63,000 dollar gross. So the gap for Marvel between overwhelming record breaking sucess and dismal failure is only about 5 million dollars.
The worst performing MCU film, Incredible Hulk grossed 163 MILLION.
5 million is NOTHING to Disney, and by extention nothing to Marvel Entertainment of which comics are a vestigal branch. If the only difference between the absolute best and worst you can do is less than one percent of the FLOOR of where you are getting most of your money from, what is the point of chasing dollars?
Why do DC and Marvel bend over backwards trying to sell? Why cant they just put out whatever they want? Its like selling your body for minimum wage. If a best seller and a worst seller are MATHEMATICALLY INDISTINGUISHABLE why even bother caring about sales? Why not just do what you want, and if it makes a little change, cool. This is like parents making a corporate action plan for there five year olds 5 cent lemonade stand. Whats even the point?
DC and Marvel are in a rare position where they are supported by massive mega companies. So why be bothered with sales when you can do whatever you want with no consequence? Your best and worst make no difference to the man upstairs, so why not just publish the best art you can because its not like it matters anyway.
