There's two different things that you can do with cyoa battles. Either have it be descriptive (including rolls is optional), which is more enjoyable to read, or have it be creatively gamey (Hijack) so that you can get a few players that love to play it. The middle ground, boringly gamey (Shooting Stars, aka, press a to continue) is the worst option.

Speaking of battle systems, I think my old one needs some serious revamping. What would /cyoag/ like to see in a new battle system? Something fast-paced and frantic, or maybe something more methodical like a turn-based system? Should there be RNG (dice, rolls, gets, etc.) or should the QM control everything? What about the numbers themselves: Should they be hidden or in plain view?
Sorry if I'm asking a lot, but I've noticed a lot of CYOA's kind of empty out during fight scenes. I'd like to try and remedy thatsince player participation is going to be a big part of my next CYOA.

It leads to an uneasy relationship between the players and the QM, and I think that's the problem with most of your CYOAs. Players get frustrated because the world is inflexible, which in turn makes the QM frustrated because the players aren't getting it, and everyone stops having fun.

Man, times really have changed since 2013-2014...That probably sounded snarkier than I intended for it to. I didn't mean it that way; I just really am surprised at how much 'nicer' this place has become.
Anyway, I won't make up excuses about the harpy. I just fell back to what I know because that's how I used to keep players on rails. I've tried not to do that with FiT at all: You guys have really taken the character and the game itself in a much different direction than I ever thought/intended, and I'm glad to roll with it. But I had to nip giving Holiday Special godmode fourth-wall-breaking powers in the bud. That was my foremost thought with the death scenewhich I remind you isn't permanent, just in case anyone thought it was. So I guess in a way it was 'Fuck you, play by my rules,' but not because your only options were to Pokemon battle the harpy. Not at all. It was just to keep the players from thinking "Oh, she can break the game? Awesome, let's solve all our problems that way.". That was all that I was trying to prevent. I'm really nervous about ever outright saying "No." to players, or giving any kind of in-game hints. I just try to have the game world itself subtly show what is and isn't a good idea, via things like the MC's thoughts, reactions (or lack thereof) from NPC's.
