It is very hard at the start of the game.
Mostly because your units are very weak and have no skills of any sort. You will die a lot.
After the first chapter though, things get easier.
battles take fucking forever. it's pretty much the only thing that hinders me from enjoying srpg
Check the guides for unlocking jobs, you might have a hard time unlocking them without knowing which jobs to level up
