You are Urist Twelfthbay, and you are the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress. It's a strange mix, one that makes you both a short, stout creature fond of drink and industry AND a tiny beardless anime girl with braids, but it's a mix that you've grown accustomed to thanks to the wonders of alcohol.

Right now, you're in Neptune's room in the Planeptune Basilicom. You're sitting on the bed, legs swinging back and forth as you watch a buncha people playing some goddamned vidya. Again.

You're still not entirely sure how or why this shit is happening a /second/ time.

Up until a few minutes ago, you were almost certain that Neptune's friends were on the verge of murdering you for somehow accidentally ass- or boob-slapping them, which happened when you dodged their /first/ attempt at murdering you for possibly being an Arfoire spy. (You really can't fucking win.)

Except, somehow, Neptune completely defused the situation.

"How did you break in!?" IF- the girl in the blue trenchcoat- had been yelling, angrily wiping away tears of pain as she clambered to her feet. "I will /break/ you if you even think of lying-"

"Hi Iffy!" Neptune had chirruped, waving like she didn't have a care in the world.

"And you! You've got to be some sort of Arfoire clone, the /real/ Neptune is somewhere else-"

"It's okay, we took care of that! Urist here broke me out of my coma by smuggling me out inside her head!"

"She WHAT-"

"Oh! Look, look, I have a little sister now! Say hi to the nice girl, Nep Jr.! Awwww, lookit that, she's shy."

"You have a WHAT-"

"Haha, the look on your face, Iffy! Gosh, I should take a picture-"

"Don't you DARE-"

"Oh! Right! I can totally prove I'm not a clone! Ta-daaa! Video games!"

"Wait, what even-"

"C'mon, Iffy, I'll beat you in that one racing game! That'll prove it beyond a doubt! Beyond the beyond, even!"

"What does that have to-"

"Oh? Oooh? Is that hesitation? Are you deflecting? Worried I'll Nep all over you? C'mon! Tag team rumble! Me an' Nepgear'll take you and Compa on!"

"But-"

"C'moooon, Iffy!"

"... oh, god, fine."

Looking at the world-weary expression on IF's face, you suddenly, and very deeply, feel so damn sorry for the poor girl and her entire existence, if all this Neppy shit is the sort of thing she has to deal with on a daily basis.

So that's what's happened. Neptune, Nepgear, IF, and Compa are sitting at the foot of the bed, playing video games and actually getting pretty into... whatever their little racing game is all about, you don't even know.

You scratch your cheek, kicking your legs in blessed, blessed boredom- you can't even REMEMBER the last time you had No Job. Seems like there's a little time left before they wrap up this round- or, y'know, before IF recovers her Nepped-up wits and remembers that there are much, much more important things to worry about than gaming.

[ ] [NEPGEAR] See how your surrogate little sister is doing. What's it like, coming "home" to Planeptune and the church-like palace she was literally born to inhabit?
[ ] [NEPTUNE] Mentally steel yourself and talk up Neptune, because you're honestly curious: what's her plan now? Is she coming back to Hyperdimension when you leave Planeptune?
[ ] [EXAMINE KEY FRAGMENT] Okay, you keep thinking these damned plot-important rocks are just.... rocks, rather than the things keeping Histoire imprisoned. Look it over and see if there's anything important that you're missing.
[ ] [CHECK PHONE] Come to think of it, you actually have service on this damn thing again, now that you're not floating in the horrific nullspace between universes. Check your messages, look at the news, maybe make sure your friends don't think you're. Y'know. Dead.
[ ] [SNEAK OUT] Explore the Planeptune Basilicom on your own. Why not? You'll probably never get a chance to come back to this place, so you might as well get some pictures for Mojang when you get back.

Do you include a "beach episode" in your campaigns?

As in a session where the plot doesn't move forward, no combat, and it's just the PCs shooting to shit and having fun in an exotic location?

My group's pretty weeb so yeah, they're kind of a dumb tradition. I remember the first one I personally kicked off was more of a bath house episode: after finally acquiring all our party members and marching for days on end, my paladin had the bright idea that a nice hot soak might be good for morale. So he went and dug out a hige hole, lined it with this waterproof skin we had, and instructed the druid to fill it up using their create water cantrip. One wizard's scorching ray later, and we were all laughing up a storm sitting naked in hot water. A hearty meal, courtesy of our wizard and ranger, and we were soon so chill that the DM sent fairies to party with us and guide us to our objective.
>>
that sounds extremely awkward and/or boring
>>
No shit? Having breather parts with some jokes and worldbuilding and introducing some new NPCs is incredibly important in pacing. You cant have grim dark on the, blades edge, on a mission, three seconds before midnight tension all the time before darkness induced apathy sets in. Seeing a burned down tavern is much more impactful if you remember visiting that place and had some drinks there a couple sessions before. It also gives structure to a campaign.

Poptart returns edition!

>A chest arrives at Town. Once opened, Poptart pokes his head out with his tail wagging behind him.
"I found her! The one you were looking for. She's currently holed up over in the Faux Pass on the way to Frostfang Mountain."

>With an excited leap the dog knocks over the chest he was delivered in which in turn dumps out a few rolled up scrolls of parchment. Shade steps forth and snatches the parchments, unraveling one at a time before nodding to itself and posting each on the Bounty Board.

I'm about to run a second campaign in a universe I created for another campaign (that went pretty well), the game style was heavily inspired by Fire Emblem, primarily the act of building up NPC allies needed to win large battles and having a story focused heavily on relationships between main characters.

I'll post a summary of the characters that were recruited last time around in another post so you get the idea. There are four primary races: Humans (civilized and barbaric), Dragonkin, Giantkin, and Changelings, but most fantasy class dynamics remain (rogues, fighters, etc.).

Give me some concepts that I can use as possible recruitments for my campaign and I'll see if I can fit some in.

Give me

A combat role (class/primarily what the character is useful for materially)
And three details of their personality or past.
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
As it was my first try at doing something like this, I remained pretty simple with the concepts, early on I gave them a "starter set" of characters to get the idea rolling. I'll also post whether or not they actually successfully recruited them.

Basic Tank (Heavy Armor / Shield) - Recruited
Basic Archer - Recruited
Villager/Cabin Boy - Recruited, later lost
Magic Warrior/Battle Priest - Recruited, later lost
Soldier/Duelist - Recruited, probably the group's favorite
Teen White Mage/Priestest - Recruited
Teen Black Mage/Sorceress - Recruited
Soldier/Secretly Noble Sensor - Recruited, later retired
Giantkin Mercenary - Failed to Recruit
Streetrat Thief - Failed to Recruit
Cavelier - Failed to Recruit
Weird Elemental Military Captain - Failed to Recruit, but was allied otherwise
Court Summoner - Recruited, then was promptly killed
Barbarian Shaman - Failed to Recruit/Killed on Sight
Dragonkin Sorceress - Failed to Recruit/Killed on Sight

You can kind of see how this went, they murdered most of them that weren't handed to them. And that's fine.
>>
I'm not going to keep this alive artificially forever, but I thought there might be some people on here who had played a Fire Emblem game and went "Hey, there should be a dude that's like X except Y or does Z", or other tried and true NPC ally concept.

Note, the players were in charge of playing these NPC's in combat and about bringing them along keeping them with them. The Cabin Boy was essentially sold into slavery.

Galba, Skull-Knight from Skull Island
Race: Human. Ostensibly. Maybe some giant in there.

Unarmored tank and bruiser. Far too large to wear normal armor, he fights in a loin cloth and with an ornately etched iron club. He has tremendous staying power and is essentially a human wall of meat. He wears a dinosaur's skull as a full face helmet, and prefers not to remove it. Ever.

1. Galba is a native of the distant and hideous Skull Island, a tropical hellparadise where dinosaurs roam. Traditional courtship among the primitive natives of Skull Island revolves around bouts of ritual single combat between a woman and her suitor. At 7' even, Galba is among the smallest and scrawniest of the manlets of Skull Island, and really never had a chance. Consumed with self loathing, he lashed together a bundle of logs, paddled out to sea, and eventually washed up on the mainland. He's been wandering ever since.

2. Like all natives of Skull Island, Galba is a violent idiot. Unlike the rest, he has a poet's soul. His personal failings led him to appreciate the beauty around him. The emerald leaves of the jungle scintillating in the wind, the shrill cries of a mother pterodactyl and her young circling overhead. The mainland is a strange new world; a softer, brighter, more beautiful one. Galba desperately wants to find friends to explore this new, less shitty world. He wants to experience all of the great things about it, and will go out of his way for a chance to experience new things.

3. Galba has a pretty limited vocabulary and often supplements it with monosyllabic grunts and vocalized pauses. He's understandable, but obviously foreign and not capable of quick or complicated banter.

Galba is looking to for food and friends and will gladly smash things in return for items. He is far too large to wear any suit of armor that isn't either made for giantkin or custom made for him. Armoring him should be a significant challenge with significant payoffs.

Hey, fa/tg/uys and ca/tg/irls, I've been doing some world building and I've a seemingly simple question that has caused me some real trouble. If I was to include a civilized shark (or any anthromorphic species, really) people into my pirate setting, would they eat fish? What about other non-humanoid sharks? And this led to new questions, concerning other animal-humanoid species and what they would eat. How do you blokes handle this issue? Do Thri-Kreen not eat bugs? Elves are already vegan, so it wouldn't be a stretch.

It's a cliche in tabletop games for the DM to have a character's loved ones (who are generally assumed to be less competent in combat than the character) targeted by their enemies.
OTHER than making your character a friendless orphan, how have you dealt with this conundrum in your games, both as a DM and as a player?
Is there some sort of guarantee that family members are unacceptable DM targets?

An example would be a character who has made his wife promise to leave their children under the protection of a paladin order if he can no longer protect them, so that at least they can live a righteous life.

I just don't talk about them, for the most part. Current Character will occasionally sit down and write out a letter or two before bed whenever he's in a major city, or the likes. Kind of hint at them, but don't really talk about them.

Talk to the DM beforehand, say that "rescuing the family" is a story you'd rather not play out, nor would you enjoy them being killed to up the drama. You are adults, so you can work out for yourselves what is acceptable or not.
