What's the best system to make a campaign set in/based on the Wild West? I'm talking high noon duels, shootouts in canyons, groups of constables going around jailing outlaws that are stealing all the town's women, that kind of stuff.

GURPS and Savage Worlds both handle it well. Just don't use d20.
>>
I'm not familiar with any specialised western games, although there are some, so I can only comment on how generic systems will work.

Savage Worlds is good if you want fairly powerful PCs and enjoy combat with miniatures. If you prefer gritty realism and more abstract combat (and stuff other than combat), BRP or GURPS will be better. If you want abstract but quick and heroic combat, maybe the D6 system would work best.

I'm going to go into a bit more detail about GURPS, because it's the system I know best and the one with the largest list of sourcebooks and optional rules to get the right feel.

GURPS has a lot of support for late nineteenth century stuff, especially gunplay. If you care about the difference between the various types of single-action revolver, this is the system for you. It can be gritty and realistic or over-the-top, but tends to do better at the former.

Recommended GURPS supplements:

The Action series: Action 2 has rules for abstract ranged combat and chases, which fit a western game very well. Action 4 is a modular character creation system which includes some specific 'wild west' choices.

Gun-Fu or Tactical Shooting add more detail for over-the-top or realistic gunplay, respectively. Both of them feature some examples from the era.

High-Tech is the equipment book for the period. Adventure Guns is the appropriate supplement to add even more guns. If you're interested in things like farming and wilderness survival, it might also be worth checking out Low-Tech Companion 3.

Pyramid magazine has a couple of relevant articles: the most obvious is issue 74 which is all about the wild west, but issue 47 is also pretty good for anyone who wants to handle blowing strongboxes open with dynamite.

I'm fairly sure this is a near universal problem with fights in RPGs and I'd like /tg/s solutions or workarounds.
Any fight against a single NPC, be they the BBEG or just an important cronie. Most RPGs have an initiative system that, ingame, are meant to occur near simultaneously but can take quite a while up around the table.

How do you make these fights entertaining tg? A party of four (let's say) all take a turn smacking the enemy and he gets to smack one of the party in return, when he's not hitting he's a beatstick for the party. And it's a bit jarring, at least for me. I know DnD5e has this "lair action" thing, where a Dragons cave might quake and rocks fall and geysers erupt etc, these have their own turn but work in the favour of the Dragon. That's a cool mechanic but I'm wondering if there're other equivalents or improvements?

just give the dragon more actions per turn

most systems would limit the dragon to something like 1 action to move, 1 action to do something combat related, and a few minor actions that are free in some way.

just give the dragon 1 or 2 extra combat actions that fall in between the player turns to make it more threatening

I'm not just talking about DnD (I don't actually play it personally) but DnD5e has the only offered solution I'm aware of?

Edge of the empire has major NPCs acting once in their initiative slot and once more at the end of the initiative order.

So, last time we began an Arbites investigation story, and got some lovely little suggestions.
Now then, any story starters and humorous ideas welcome, doesn't mean I won't write serious of course, fire away anons.

Requester of the arbites story here. I really liked it, especially how the Judge was portrayed: Experienced, hardened, just like the best of Arbites are supposed to be.

Yup, I wanted to go with something slightly steretypical, though not just straight ripping off judge dredd, I'll try and get a part 2 done tonight or tomorrow (If I'm not busy on the lewd thread)

Welcome to Saiyan Quest. This takes place shortly after the war against the Tuffles, as the Saiyans look for more foes to battle in the absence of their old enemies.

Voting will operate on a first to five system, at least for the time being.

Dialogue is allowed to be added to votes, as are actions (though I'll ignore what I consider shitposting)

During battles, options will usually have a number assigned to them. After that vote has won, players will roll a d100, and have three chances to match or beat that number.

If a 100 is rolled, it is considered a crit success (unless 100 was the number you had to match).

If a 1 is rolled, it is a crit failure, regardless of whether or not the other two rolls are high enough to succeed.

If, during a battle, players want to attempt a writein action, that is allowed, but I am the one who will assign the number to it, so use caution

You're a young male Saiyan who fought in the war with the Tuffles. You are an average fighter for now, but have the potential of one of the greatest warrior races to roam the universe flowing through your veins. There is no limit to what you can accomplish through blood, sweat, and tears.

Power Levels (as of the start of this thread)

It's been two weeks since the planet surrendered itself to your control.

In that time, resistance movements quickly sprung up to oppose your new rule. Bardock and his crew insisted on being the ones to deal with them, and did so quite brutally. The death and destruction they caused has sent a clear message that any defiance is nothing more than a path to destruction.

Kamatsuna has provided you with a new scouter, and begun work on a second healing tank, which she is convinced will be of higher quality than the previous one. The planet has a good supply of fuel, which has been used to restock your ship for now. And, you've collected more than enough food and drink from the locals to keep everyone on your ship happy for a good while.

In the meantime, Rugula has taken to training those with Heran blood, just as you instructed. Many have died in the training, as Rugula's methods are decidedly intense, but those who have survived have already increased in power, with the strongest among them possessing a power level of nearly 700 now.

The issue of who to leave in charge when you depart has come up, with most of the Saiyans suggesting leaving a Heran in charge. However, the Heran students have made you aware of a resentment the common people have toward their kind, and suggest you leave a full-blooded Afhanian in charge.

"We'll have to decide sooner or later," Soko tells you. "What do you think?"

However, because of an error in judgment, catastrophe struck her and her companions. Now the order of the Rangers are all but wiped out, the young witch Mona is unconscious after some powerful magical burst, and our protagonist finds herself protecting Mona from a pack of wolves and their strange leader.

You stand before a pair of sharp, bluegreen eyes, penetrating the dark of the forest. A cold, slightly damp hand rests on your neck, sending a shiver down your back. All around you are the shimmering yellow eyes of the wolves, silently watching you. Just behind you, resting on a bed of flowers in a heap is Mona, stable but unconscious.

How much of an impact on society would a dearth of families have?

That is, consider a setting where the vast majority of sapient creatures are born from the spirits of the dead, aspects of nature, ancient objects, magical energies, or what-have-you, much like the outsiders of Planescape. They can still reproduce the old-fashioned way, but only a small fraction of the population is born in such a manner.

How different would society and its values be due to this one factor alone?

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami trainee.

You, along with about a hundred other trainees, have taken the 12th Division Captain's special test meant to measure your potential as a member of the scientific division. Just as Urahara Kisuke has promised, the test had practically no questions aimed at general erudition or one's education as a Shinigami. It was a simple written test with 30 question and 8 possible answers for each.

The strangest thing about the test is that none of the answers seemed valid at all. It's not that they were all blatantly wrong; it's that they seemed to be correct, all at the same time.

But perhaps you just couldn't figure them out. Indeed, it may be a little arrogant to assume that because you couldn't find the correct answer, they were all wrong.

Regardless, you answered the questions to the best of your ability. The results were to be mailed a week after the fact, but it actually took the captain three weeks to check the tests. Perhaps he's been busy with something.

You unwrap the envelope, but instead of your results and a recommendation, or perhaps the absence of the latter, as you've been expecting, the letter you have in your hands is an invitation for tea with Urahara Kisuke.

It's strange. It doesn't state the reason, so you're left to guess.

...

>Ask around, try to figure out if anyone else received an invitation.
>Be more subtle about it, ask your classmates about their results instead.
>Don't bug anyone, just head to the meeting when the time comes.

I'd rather not fuck up this may be a test to see if we can keep our mouth shut about the discoveries in the squad or something. Better safe than sorry.

Hey guys, let me know when you are here.
I had an idea lastnight. Do you want some grandpa time, or should we do the dungeon?

I was thinking in following grandfather around for a day and show his regular day while Eldric & co go to the dungeon. Its not as if monsters from level 1 to 40 are going to give him any trouble, and I think I got some good ideas for granspa day.

I think we got a good idea of what grandpa is like, and the lack of participation and leadership he shows when it comes to running the city.

Maybe Alard's father instead? Responsibility for trying to keep the city running seems to have fallen to him, and he seems to be more responsible.

I dont have any funny scenes in mind for him. Following him around would be more like reading a kafkian novel, you know? the amount of work that guy does... actually, I think that would be somehow fun in its own right... alright that gave me some ideas on how to do it if you guys want to go with that, so:

>Watch grandpa wander around like a drunk leviathan, unknowingly throwing his weight around and helping everyone in the most hamfisted way possible.
>Watch uncle Wolfric as he goes through a regular work day.
>Lets go the dungeon

Also, i've been trying to re-write the magic system for the game, so I made this chart... jesus fuck this was so much easier to do just a year ago when my eyes were better. Seriously, this took me all day yesterday. Kind of pisses me off.

I was also reading on ancient chinese elements and their relationships, but whoever translated that did a piss-poor job of it. I mean, look at this, what the fuck does overacts mean? I asked the chemical engineer friend that inspired me to create this quest and he has no fucking clue either, even though he's a bigger nerd than I am and could go into rants in latin and talk about conceptual magic systems of the west.

And the elements "insult" the elements that are strong against them... wtf, really

I really have no idea what overacts means

What was the name of the retired demi-god who became the family steward? What about him writing up a list of duties, responsibilities, and generally what Wolfric gets done and how much more work the steward still has to do, so that Eldric (who he doesn't want to see abandoning his responsibilities like Cedric) sees what he needs to be thinking about, and not just filling his manors with cute maids.

Trick question, it's always the layer of virtuous pagans. The other layers are only fun if you have control over the fiends living there. If you do have that, don't even bother packing everything, you can take all the earthly pleasures being teased to the tormented souls.

Make things not go to plan, their transport gets fuckled on the way to the objective and so on. Let the PCs do their thing because obviously command is incompetent and you know better. Throw in some stuff that soldiers would do outside of "go place, shoot"ยด, shit like being pulled into a gambling ring and the commissar is sniffing it out. Hell even parade duty is hilarious.
If they ever gain a reputation for being the soldiest soldiers to ever soldier have some higher-ups pull them into some sort celebration of their heroism and shit. Soldiers trying to socialize with nobles is bound to cause shenanigans.

Most of my characters aren't forward thinking enough to consider that (hence why they're adventurers).

My Baklunish Rogue Akbar wants to become a wealthy lord in the Hold of the Sea Princes (Greyhawk).

Janus is a human fighter who figured he'd retire from the Guard Corps of his city, but now he's in charge of a rebellion so he fully expects to die fighting.

My human ranger has actually just had this conversation and joked about returning to carpentry, but he's aware that his job doesn't really allow for retirement.
