Your name is Finnel Leoric, Captain of the Brass Boys, Head of the Great Company of the Valemen, a mercenary company with a name longer than its history. You’ve been sent across the Narrow Sea by your Lord William Bordain in the hopes of getting him the two things he needs most to survive the coming storms: Gold and Glory.
Until yesterday, your time in Essos had bored you to tears. Endless talks, parties, meetings, parties, ‘discreet inquiries’, and the occasional party to break up the monotony. You were beginning to wonder if your merchant contact had tricked your lord into loaning him an army as a topic to bring up over drinks, but luckily, things are looking different now.
You’ve had your first client, a young woman named Orissa Eranoris, who wanted protection from her rivals. She never made it particularly clear who said rivals were, but within 4 hours of signing a contract, an armed man dragged your merchant contact, Doma Toceri, into your room at the inn.
He now lies bleeding out on the floor before you, as Doma attempts to explain to you how “held at knife-point” means “in no danger” in Essos.

>What is this?
Quests are communal Roleplaying Games. You and other posters will decide the actions and responses of a Main Character, either from presented choices, or your own write-ins.

>How do I contribute?
My posts provide you potential options. Vote for your favorite, or write your own. The Post with the most votes will be the character’s action. Some posts will ask for rolls. Rolls are determined from the best of the first 3 rolls submitted.

>What's the story?
This particular quest takes place in an alternate version of the Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire universe, some 13 years before the events of the first book. The first post contains a general summary of your current state, but if you want to know more about your character history, look for “Song of Iron and Hate” and “Knock-Off Game of Thrones Quest” on the sup/tg/ Archives.

Why is monk the most underrated class?
241 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
Because D&D et al is a pretty shitty place for them.

They were decent in 4e and you can make a better monk using Tome of Battle/Path of War stuff, but there are better games and systems for playing martial artists of all stripes.
>>
>>44549809
Because people don't want to believe that that they could do extraordinary things on their own and the only person holding them back is themselves. Its much easier to believe that the system is designed against you and unless you're lucky enough for the "key" to fall into your hand you're just a fucked scrub, whether that key is a magic micguffin or a unique trait that only sets you apart is irrelevant.

The whole idea of a monk is that they're a normal person that pushes themselves through hard work, dedication and perseverance. Literally anyone can do it, but if you tell someone that the only reason you're you and not mister amazing hands over there is because they're a lazy fuck, they don't like that. So an excuse is made e.i. mister amazing hands was lucky, or shit is unfair. This correlates as much to real life as it does to fantasy and the fact that the people trying to escape real life via fantasy may often go to table top games just compounds this.

Tl;dr people are just as lazy in fantasy as in real life

Note: this does not apply to the people who actually enjoy the acting and real roleplaying as appossed to those who just want an ego stroke.
>>
>>44549845
Pretty much this. D&D heavily influences tabletop games. Monks are bad in the most influential version of D&D. Thus Monks are performed as bad.

Hey /epg/ is back! I have a question for my game: what would a secret research station on the surface of Venus be like?
>>
>>44546300
>what would a secret research station on the surface of Venus be like?

It'd have to be run by Q-morphs or similar on the outside, probably have a giant heat shield of something anti-corrosive over the important bits. Geothermal power maybe?

Best way would be to rig it to have a secure darkcasting rig so most people just beam in, very rarely do they smuggle physical bodies/stacks down with the mining. Then you can have the classic horror scenario "wake up and realize you can't go outside because outside will fucking kill you".

D&D 4e General: Discuss anything directly related to D&D 4e here.

If you are GMing, remember...
1. To strongly consider giving out at least one free "tax feat," like Expertise and pre-errata Melee Training.
2. To use Monster Manual 3/Monster Vault/Monster Vault: Nentir Vale/Dark Sun Creature Catalog math. Avoid or manually update anything with Monster Manual 1 or 2 math.
3. That skill challenges have always been scene-framing devices for the GM, that players should never be overtly told that they are in a skill challenge, and that the Rules Compendium has the most up-to-date skill DCs and skill challenge rules.

If you would like assistance with character optimization, tell us what the what the rest of the players are playing, what books are allowed, your starting level, the highest level you expect to reach, what free feats you receive, whether or not dragonmarks and HP-boosting backgrounds are allowed, whether or not themes are allowed, your starting equipment, and how much you dislike item-dependent builds.

If you wish to talk about settings, 4e's settings are Points of Light (the planes and the natural world's past empires are heavily detailed in various sourcebooks and magazines), 4e Forgotten Realms, 4e Eberron, 4e Dark Sun, and whatever setting you would like to bring into 4e.

Unfortunately, damage type-switchers, damage type-adders, and damage keywords have always been a profoundly murky, gray area in the rules.

There has never been a clear, unambiguous answer to this matter, much to the chagrin of people who wish to make use of Frostcheese, radiant mafia, Psychic Lock, and Resounding Thunder builds through less conventional means (e.g. Malec-Keth Janissary).

This is something you will have to run through your DM.

What class is the best leader?

Like, actually best at healing and support?
>>
>>44531959

In terms of raw force multiplication and support, the warlord is easily the all-around best leader in the game provided that most of your party is equipped with strong basic attacks. The Tactical Presence or Resourceful Presence warlord is the cream of the crop here, particularly by the paragon tier thanks to the superlative Battle Captain paragon path from the Player's Handbook 1.

In a party with middling basic attacks, on the other hand, the title of "best leader" is much too dependent on what everyone else is playing. You should manually assess the strengths and weaknesses of the party, then pick a leader class to capitalize on those strengths and minimize those weaknesses.

As far as the *worst* leader in the game is concerned, I would give that title to the Charisma/Wisdom-based Mantle of Clarity ardent. It is horrendously fragile for a front-line character (chain, no shield, poor Fortitude and Reflex), and it has very little support of note.

Is there any other information you can provide to help narrow down a class?

>What's your favorite clan? Why?
Monkey, fortune favors the bold and Scorpion waifus.

>What do you want to see in the reboot?
The last few years of metaplot gone, let the taint either be a very real thing to worry about again with Spiders being an insidious fake clan that might be going legit, or go with a more Asian folklore sort of deal where there's no arch agent of darkness other than the lying darkness. Oni and other things become more spirit like things of the natural world.

>What should be taken out forever?
Daigotsu/Fu Leng being good.

>Is there a company would you have preferred to take over, or are you fine with Fantasy Flight?
I like FFG, though I'm worried how much crazy dice they'll come up with for it.

>What's the best bit of advice for GMs new to the game?
Have a plan or at least a theme for the game, and in some way communicate it to the players before hand so they have an idea of what to expect. No one likes going Courtier in a war game. Also, don't over due the ninja/scorpion inevitable betrayal.

>What's the best bit of Advice you can give to players?
Talk with your GM about for character and what you expect for them.

>What's that samurai you've always wanted to make but never got the chance to?
Probably a tortoise jew merchant or Mantis pirate.

>What was the story of your last PC?
Suffering.
>>
I don't know if I like the idea of Fantasy Flight taking over until I actually see what they poop out.
Sometimes they're good, but on the other hand, Elemental Dice, or worse, Clan Dice (With imperials, minor clans, and ronin told to go fuck themselves) both sound like really bad ideas that could easily make whatever guy at FFG has a fetish for special dice have to change his underwear every time he walks into the office.

A good fly speed, so they can fly 100 feet above you and give you a great scouting vantage. Advantage on Perception checks so they can see shit great (and have 18 passive Perception for sight), and an impressive 120ft darkvision range. And flyby, so they can zip in and out of range using the Help action with little risk of dying.

Also they're cute.

Remember, back in the 80's, when D&D actually taught you how to summon demons so you could use magic in real life?

When did rpgs become so casual?

>>

How casual can you get.
>>
>>44561432

Started with GURPS.

D&D was clear cut man. Draw the sigils, make a pact with an ancient being, and BAM! mind control and fireballs at your finger tips. True it drove some people to commit suicide because they couldn't handle being amazing (its not for everybody), but the thrill was amazing.

Then GURPS came along and it disrupted the balance needed for demonic rites and rituals.

I still have fond memories of sucking the teat of a decapitated she-goat to summon a succubus so I could learn how to cast Light in exchange for her drinking a load of my jizz.

Back in the 80's, being able to summon up light on anything was a pussy magnet, man. True, I cast it on my dick more than once and fucked an epileptic chick in total darkness to get her to have a seizure on dick, but just the utility of being able to have a light source no matter what was super handy back in the pre-cell phone days when flashlights were complete pieces of shit or the size of a medium dog.
>>
>>44561432
Fantasy in general became casual when Warcraft got big and Lord of the Rings made it popular.

If you mean when did RPGs stop being a favored target for scaremongers like Jack Chick, that's a lot more closely related to that era's religious right being ridiculously embarrassed by scandals. Jim Bakker's affair, Jimmy Swaggart's soliciting and Oral Roberts' shameless money grab set the Religious Right back so far, they weren't even politically significant within the Republican party for a couple of decades. Besides, the next trendy thing to be scared of was environmental concerns, along with new-age hippie bullshit. The American public always has to have something to be scared of.

Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

You've finally made it to Unfound and immediately confronted some curious characters. Nettie, the little girl tending a frighteningly equipped weapons store, was kind to give you a rather simple contract to complete while also giving you a discount from her store. Other than that, you found Unfound to have a rather unique and cozy atmosphere. You don't blame Ivan for wanting to be a Dustkeeper.

Your Contract with Connell has finally gone underway, and you soon found yourself delving into the yet-mostly-unexplored floor AA, the third deepest floor the Dustkeepers have uncovered of the Unfound facility thus far. And already, you've splatted your first few mutants while also nabbing a neat, rare piece of armour for Ley'ra to wear.

“Okay, Gavin. You can turn around now,” Bethany announces, causing you to sigh and shake your head. Rolling your eyes, you shift yourself on the steel bench of the locker room and turn around...

To see a frighteningly red pair of red goggles staring at you.

“Hi,” Ley'ra greets, her voice speaking through her facemask's intercoms.

“Hi,” you respond, laughing. Ley'ra pulls down her facemask, revealing her pale-skinned face with a smile. You turn to Beth. “Was it necessary to get us to turn around? She was just putting on armour.”

Beside you on the bench, Ivan turns around.

“Ah!” he yelps, startled. “I almost did not recognize you, Ley'ra.”

“It's me,” Ley'ra meekly responds. Sya'ra comes up behind her, patting her plated shoulder.

“I don't know how many people Ley'ra gave PTSD,” she snorts.

“Yes, Gavin,” Beth answers, shaking her head. “Girls need privacy.” To your dismay Ley'ra jokingly nods. Comet looks at her with a curious expression, but decides to nod along with her.

Out from the corner of the room, Connell walks out from behind a low wall, clapping his gloved hands together.

“Eugh, stalkers have slimy skin,” he complains, knocking his helmet a few times with his knuckle. He looks at the new armour-clad Ley'ra. “Suited up?”

“Mhmm,” she responds, holding her rifle tight.

“Right, let's get a move on,” Connell orders, grabbing his plasma rifle from the sling over his back. “No doubt the noise we made alerted other mutants around the area. Might not just be stalkers, but I've confirmed that nothing's coming our way right now.”

>View current loadouts (you can ask me to paste this any time).
