>What's a good twist for a Medieval not-japan setting?
It's India in terms of religion and Han-dynasty China in terms of government.

Samurai were always also ministers (rather than being pacified later on) and Not!Shintoism reveres a mother/father deity as highest spiritual force.

The size of your weapon is based on your blood. Peasants are allowed only daggers. Soldiers carry shortswords and maces. Nobility use spears and naginata.

The land is showered with meteors. Every meteor has a color and can be made into cosmetic. Many of them also give off poisonous gas. Some of it is good for killing undead, hence there are very few undead in the land. But that gas is also good at killing rice, so people don't like storing all their rice at home where it might get rotten by space gas.

Central granaries set up by the government are where the food goes. Farmers get paid for each bag of rice they bring with paper dollars, the only country to use them. Each dollar is good for one bag of rice from a granary, so it has a fixed value.

The Emperor of the land is always immortal, as the purity priests that surround him constantly fan the air to make it fresher and pick only the whitest grains of rice from the cleanest ponds and gardens. They don't die of old age but they still age and go far beyond youth, becoming senile and very weak. They usually die do to accident, and many strange laws such as having hand grips in public bathhouses and outlawing pointy fences have resulted. The people of the nation laugh at their 'bumbling emperors' but outsiders are not allowed to make fun of them.

>source; my very loosely asian-inspired nation from my setting. 'Shohou' or 'Land of Falling Stars'.

Samurai are literally demons or half demons enslaved to a master, when they master dies they either are set free to become roaming demons or kill themselves and go home.

Later on crossover with "knights" who are armored angels.

So, aside from being power fantasy central that banks on catering to weebs, why would anyone buy Anima?
21 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Anima is actually pretty cool. Large variety of shit you can do with your character, stuff like a custom technique creation system, an interesting combat system that makes weapons actually feel different from each other, etc.

Of course it has its flaws, but having run a game in it and having played part of another game in it, I'd totally do so again if I had the chance.
>>
>>44583667
Actually good system(Even if 99% of people on /tg/ get a spastic fit over it)
Cheap-ish tabletop game that can be fun for a few games. And defunct lol.
No idea why the fuck you'd buy the card game since it's pretty shit.

>power fantasy central
The irony of saying this on /tg/ is large enough to be pointed out.
>>
>>44583794
It's not even that 'power fantasy'. Level 1 Anima character is really nothing special.

I'll shamelessly bump with my current stuff.

I'm trying to write a vietnam war style scenario with the party starting as mercenaries for the invading and being left to themselves in the woods after an ambush. They can try to go back to their initial camp or join the vietcong elves.

I want to have them completely stressed out, with doubt on who's civilian and who's the enemy.

At the end, either using the invaders new massive weapon to raze the jungle or relics from the rebels to push back the army.

I don't have a lot of ideas on encounters beside villagers/rebels attacking them or strange noises in the forest. Any ideas on how to improve this ?

I've been working on a campaign setting that incorporates my favourite aspects of Arthurian Legend, real world history, Greek Mythology, etc etc.

It's been about a year since I started and I haven't got anywhere near finishing because of other commitments and mental health issues but I'm genuinely proud of the world and hope to compile it for the players to review.

Although, I can never find the motivation to do so.

How does /tg/ deal with motivation and creative fatigue?
>>
>>44584519
Cutting what's not necessary or what can be left vague for the PC to uncover themselves.. Players will, intentionnaly or not, go offroad. So cutting some stuff will ease the stuff left to write.

Else, submit what you got to friends, preferably not the players and take suggestions.

I'm relatively new to D&D 5th even though I've been Forever DM for all editions past. I heard that 5e runs just fine as-is if I don't hand out a single magic item. Is that true or do I at least have to give a certain amount of magic armor and weapons with bonuses to make sure the martials keep up with the casters?
37 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You need some degree of magic weapons for the martials after about level 6-ish because otherwise enemies will start to get resistant and eventually immune to nonmagic weapons. That's all.
>>
>>44582674
Outside of monsters with DR, no. Feats are much more important than magic items.
>>
>>44582674
Be careful, there're some monsters that are outright immune to non-magical damage, so that kills the martials.
They're also some, more than the previous, monsters with resistance to non-magical damage, that fucks the martials.

You know when you do something for so long that it becomes rote and you feel your own actions are obvious.

The emperor is that on crack. He's someone trying to uplift humanity who at the same time doesn't properly understand it's flaws and expects everyone to be held to a standard that's basically impossible

>Back on Track Edition

Adversary is a new, custom format for Magic: The Gathering intended to be played over Cockatrice.
Update 4 is live!

>How is it played?
http://pastebin.com/4JUSJp01
In Adversary, players select an Adversary card from an existing archive, or create their own. These Adversaries enter play from turn one, and possess abilities that change the way the game is played. If you've ever tried out Vanguard, you'll feel right at home. Adversary uses 61-card decks (including the Adversary card). The format is Modern Singleton.

>How are Adversaries balanced?
Each Adversary is assigned three values: a life total, a starting hand size, and a level. The life total and starting hand size are used to balance Adversaries based on the power of their abilities. In the event that they cannot be effectively balanced this way, Adversaries are also assigned a level, indicating that they are only suited for play against Adversaries of a similar level.

>How can I make my own Adversary?
Post your desired rules text, color identity, illustration and artist-to-credit in this thread and I might make it for you! Alternatively, make it yourself in Photoshop or an MTG card creation program. I will then add it to the .xml file and it will become available to everyone.

Weird. The board auto-deleted the thread as soon as I tried creating it. I don't even know how come I managed to make it pop back into existence.

Anyways, in case Adversary General isn't welcome in /tg/ any longer I'll be temporarily moving the general to /trash/ in order to regroup and search for a new allocation elsewhere.
>>
>>44582815
In case we are allowed to stay, here is the topic / objectives for the thread

>Create new adversaries.
>Discuss new pitches.
>Balance currently existing adversaries.
>Get on Cockatrice and play, have fun.
>Suggest changes to the format, new rules, new mechanics, even new card types. Get wild.

Remember, /adv/ IS NOT a custom card thread in disguise, but a format. That's why the focus of the thread should be balancing the 50 current adversaries + Spike's set. For this very reason the number of new pitches that will be accepted will be reduced for the time being.

How does /tg/ start writing campaigns?

Producing maps, creating memorable characters, plots, hooks, adventures, all this is a ton of work, especially if the players decide to not continue playing.

How do I prepare for everything, basically? I mean PCs can do whatever they want, what's to stop them from going somewhere I haven't planned?

tl;dr tips and tricks by DMs for DMs
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>44582000
Start from the PCs. Who are they and what they want? Who would they cross paths with trying to achieve those things? Then combine those and fiddle with it until it mostly makes sense.
>>
>>44582000
New DM here

I personally like to make a huge world map, as I draw I think of how the environment might shape the people that live there. Then I think of very vague, very loose possible plot hooks that could happen in those locations. I do all of this before "Session Zero" and then offer my players a very brief explanation of each location and what they most likely can expect from those locations. I let them choose which region, island, nation or whatever to start on and then I listen to them discuss what possible characters they will want to make. By the end of "Session Zero" I usually have a good idea of what everyone will be playing and where they want to be, and only after I get that inkling on my players do I begin to actually plan out potential plot hooks for the party.

For example, if my players decide to begin on the largest island that is mostly controlled by human nations with an uneasy alliance, I might start the players in a small village, far from the major cities. I'll give them a reason to begin looking for work which will slowly bring them inland and with each NPC they speak to I might drop some subtle hints that two of the nations are getting close to blood shed. After a few small quests and more dialogue I might drop a hint that one of the nations attacked the other one and started a war. Now the PC's have the option to get involved in either side or go to a new area of the map. Alternatively if I have a party who are deeply tied to religious events I might use an ancient evil or a cult as a plot hook and instead make it so that the players must venture deep into a dangerous temple to find an artifact, or to slay the leader of the group.

Most importantly it's important to make it so failure is part of the story.
>>
New GM's will always without fail construct a vast sprawling world with far too many integrated rules and elements of lore.

The way veterans do it is they'll typically work off what the players what to do and the PC's they've made.

Those books are so great, for young adult fiction anyway. The setting would work great for any pulp RPG, like FATE or Savage Worlds, pulp heroism, adventure and peril in a world where cities never stay still.

Although thinking back, those books actually had a lot of depth to them. From all the interesting bits of lore about how the world ended up like that, to the fact that it's one of the only books I can think of with an explicitly ugly female lead (which is also the reason it'll never be adapted to a visual medium, sadly.)

Must admit, I think steampunk is the most overrated, autistic setting there is. However I love this series, got really fond memories of ready it as a boy.

and yes I know it's not technically steampunk but it pretty much is so just shut your hole

Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1976. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.

Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.
