moderators started cracking down on offtopic posting in desktop threads starting months ago, either that or some specific posters in the thread started reporting all offtopic posts getting lots of posters banned regularly.
After a while this made even more offtopic posting as people got frustrated with so many posts getting deleted, eventually people started making threads with offtopic OP images (like most threads on /g/ do anyway) and the mods started deleting them
Now there are no more desktop threads at all

They're just cracking down on everything currently and trying to make sure everything fits strictly within the rules, when in reality the rules have been very loosely adhered to in the past and aren't set in stone.
Usually slight off topic is more than tolerated and no one bats an eye, now it's a different matter altogether and can get you a ban for a single sentence.
A lot of fun actually came from off topic, and discussing another boards topic on a different board was often a lot of fun and everyone generally enjoyed the threads.
Seems like that's pretty much dead now which honestly saddens me

I used to like ID's until phone posting got so largely spread. it takes 5 seconds for a phone poster to get a new ID and after seeing how easy it is for my computer to get one its hard to care. I do like finding shills that are too stupid to realize IDs exist and call them out on it though, it happens a couple times a day on /pol/ still which is weird.

Mod was definitely lurking the thread, and SNAPPED right when he saw my artistic post. Hit submit I saw the red [Deleted] faster than anyone could have reported me. Checked 4chan.org/banned and there it was, but the thread was still going. Couple minutes later and the thread closes, just sat and watched the posts get executed one by one in realtime. You could feel the fury he was going through.
