Splitting /tv/ is not going to cause any problems. If anything it'll allow for more specific rules to be made for each half. The film discussion will move to film and tv discussion will go on /tv/, making room for more diverse discussion about tv shows that isn't currently present on /tv/. I think in this case splitting film and tv is going to 'fix' /tv/ up a bit. I think both boards will continue to have the same "problems", but less over all, or more contained. Likewise, there will be an increase of the number of "successful" and on-topic threads.
Time will tell. But yeah, splitting up boards isn't going the answer for every board or needed change. That's why I think admin needs to allow time to see what works and carefully consider big changes.
(also, didn't Hiro at one point, very early on, when one new board was added, or another board changed, say that it could always change back? I could swear I remember seeing something like that. Obviously, this wouldn't be ideal. But it goes to show that he's willing to try to give anons what they want and to improve the site. We're never all going to agree - and that's probably one of the biggest risks to what works and what doesn't.
I just think that the intentions are good here, and we could help improvements and make changes positive by cutting admin some slack and not shouting things down before launch. Valve have just started handing out VAC bans to those who used a cheat engine called lmaobox on Team Fortress 2, around 10k bans today alone. A lot of competitive players have been detected using it and have also been banned.
The best thing about this whole thing? A lot of those people getting VAC banned had lots of rare cosmetics that can no longer be used because of the ban; valve deletes everything you didn't directly buy from the Mann Co store if you get VAC banned
