Post any comments on captcha performance starting this week, if you have them, or don't if you don't have them.

I can't help with individual cases but the difficulty was adjusted recently.

I've had no problems in shitting up the site with my useless opinions.
No problems, felt like it got easier since there are less "click until X disappears".
>>
>>499794
I got the captcha window growing vertically to max size but staying empty yesterday.
>>
I was not a fan on the ones where you have to click them, and they disappear. I've gotten multiple captcha's wrong due to it, is there anyway it could be better?
>>
>>499805
I use classic captcha and I've never even seen these. Sounds horrible.

I got sick and forgot to answer some useless questions so here you go. But I'm not going to do this forever, you'd just get bored of me.

>>Futakoi Alternative
>Did you ever watch W-Wish, Tenshi no Shippo-chu or Seraphim Call?

Nah. Futakoi Alternative isn't like that really. I had some plan to watch Uta-Kata and Kokoro Library but didn't get around to it.

> What is/was your favourite April fool?

Answering this is problematic because there's actually no evidence of our old April Fools anywhere, so we actually got to reuse one in the last year or two and nobody noticed. (that's why the jokes in Sticky were kind of old)

My favorite was sharing posts on Facebook. BTW, my real "great" idea hasn't been done because we don't know people who want to write HTML5 game engines for us for free.

> What OS do you use and why isn't it OS X?

It is OS X, plus super slow Asus thing for VNs, plus some VMs sometimes. The OS 4chan uses is FreeBSD, which is nearly a great OS but kind of stuck in the 90s.

i primarily use legacy captcha and i feel like i'm getting more of the street signs and less of the more forgiving street numbers. am i imagining things?

1-What's up with the "select [x] until there aren't any" (or something like that, idk the thing is set-up as spanish in my case) and "select all images with street names" why are they so fucking difficult
2- why some browsers suffer from pic related?.

Everything seems to be running smoothly. I'll have moments when all images/gifs/webm's stop loading on every thread and board I'm currently on and later navigate to. This is on Chrome and closing all tabs and restarting fixes it. Not sure what causes it though. It's usually after having the computer on for several hours.

It's alright but sometimes there's that kind of captcha that, when you click, the boxes go blank and the image is replaced with something else, in such a way you can't ever finish the captcha.

The only way out is F5ing the page until you get a decent captcha.

>>
Hiro, PLEASE delete (or at least modify) the robot on /r9k/. It's designed in a way so that it actually discourages original content yet still allows cancer to fester thanks to the fact that you can pretty much bypass it by typing some variant of the word "blox". I know people think /r9k/ isn't worth saving but it's been able to produce OC in the past when moot killed the robot, but ever since it was reinstated the board has become irredeemable shit.
>>
Since several days ago. Legacy captchas have been failing more often for me.
Also, when saving from twitter put :orig on the end of the URL to get the ORIGinal image

I literally came here to complain about this too, then I had a thought "what if I kept clicking them until no more were left", looking back I realize I'm an idiot.

What I'm use to are the "select X", these ones literally want all of X to be gone, I admit I feel extremely stupid after this realization
>>

>>
Since they're both pretty much the same board, which gets more action: /vp/ or /trash/?
>>
>>501571
>Implying the same threads aren't already being reposted every day

>>
>>501176
The robot is made to force people to make OC dipshit, but I guess your a newfag judging by the frog
>>
>>501793
For OC to thrive, it must be allowed to spread and be reposted again and again. The robot makes it so any potential new memes can't be reposted, thereby ruining whatever potential said meme had. It's why you rarely see any /r9k/ exclusive memes, while pretty much every other board has their own culture.
>>
>>501970
kill yourself
>>
>>502200
Stay mad.
>>
>>501970
>For OC to thrive
>must be allowed to spread and be reposted again and again
Obviously then it's no longer OC.

Memes are not the point of 4chan.
Memes != Fun.
You can have all kinds of enjoyment here without resorting to memery.
>>
>>501970
Literally cancer. Who the fuck cares about meme OC? The robot is supposed to enforce discussion OC which does in turn creates fun and new memes, like what is supposed to happen. If you are such a stupid faggot that you need memes and shit to come here and that the prevention of extreme reposting upsets you, then 4chan isn't for you.
>>
>>502306
>You can have all kinds of enjoyment here without resorting to memery.
Yes, you can. But /r9k/ was meant to produce original content, and in the years since its inception the board has become virgin self-pity central 101. moot even said himself that /r9k/ hasn't been original in years, which is why he finally disabled the robot.

>>502307
>Literally cancer. Who the fuck cares about meme OC? The robot is supposed to enforce discussion OC which does in turn creates fun and new memes, like what is supposed to happen.
Name 5 memes /r9k/ has produced since its creation that aren't essentially variants of >tfw no gf.

>If you are such a stupid faggot that you need memes and shit to come here and that the prevention of extreme reposting upsets you, then 4chan isn't for you.
When a board that's created to produce OC fails to do even that, it has failed as a board.
>>
>>502333
>But /r9k/ was meant to produce original content,
/r9k/ was meant to be a better /b/, not a meme machine. Memetards are fucking cancer who apparently completely miss the point.

The only 'meme board' on the entire website is [s4s]. Every other board is for discussion or image dumping, not for shitting out OC and people who care about OC so much are cancer.
>>
>>502342
>/r9k/ was meant to be a better /b/, not a meme machine.
And now it's essentially /b/ 2.0, right down to the exact same threads getting posted again and again every single day.

>The only 'meme board' on the entire website is [s4s].
moot said himself that he loves [s4s] because it reminds him of old /b/, which is pretty much saying /r9k/ has failed to, as you put it, "be a better /b/".

>Every other board is for discussion or image dumping, not for shitting out OC and people who care about OC so much are cancer.
Only difference is /r9k/ was created with the purpose of creating new OC.
>>
>>499794
Yes, the current captcha blows dick, times out too quickly, and the new one is very slow disappearing tiles.

Is this your master plan to make us buy a pass?

I can upload 1 MB files again without connection error, but that's not a huge gain.
>>
>>502347
>Only difference is /r9k/ was created with the purpose of creating new OC.
It wasn't, get that through your head. /r9k/ was literally an experiment, with the main goal of trying to make a better /b/. And it is clear that it failed and that you can't have a better /b/ in the modern memey 4chan. One of the reasons it failed is, besides the fact it became /adv/, is because of retards like you who desire repetition and are too stupid to move the fuck on, eg. pepe. The purpose of the robot isn't to create new OC, it is to prevent repetition and to keep everything fresh, the exact opposite of what you want clearly. In-fact, I think it'd be interesting if the robot was turned on globally or at-least for OP wise. It would be a interesting experiment to see how meme babys react when they can no longer constantly do nothing but repeat the same thing on a global scale, since the majority of shit would be churned out of the first day.

[s4s] is compared to old 4chan not because its a memey shitposting board, mate. It's the environment of the board and the attitude of the users. The only memey part would be that the board is anything but repetitive. Someone is started, it goes through its cycle which is generally a few hours to a few weeks and then people drop it and move onto the next thing instead of constantly trying to forcefully keep it alive long past its cycle like a bunch of unfunny fucks. So, basically, the board is also everything you aren't looking for.

Anyone who values and rates a board by the memes it makes should kill themselves.
>>
>>502333
Isn't this literally the exact argument given for why they turned the robot back on in the first place?

I swear I read anons saying these exact words:
>It used to produce OC, now it's nothing but feels threads because they turned the robot off
>>
>>502382
Literally the only times I've seen OC get created was when moot killed the robot. It's really not a good system and most people who want it to stay are trying to cling to that last scrap of so-called "board culture" that /r9k/ pretends it has.
>>
>>502392
There is literally no purpose to /r9k/ without the robot. If you are going to remove the robot, you may as well just delete the board instead and tell the users to move to /b/.
>>
>>502405
>There is literally no purpose to /r9k/ without the robot.
That's why I said either remove or fix the robot, it's good in concept but in practice it just sucks.

>If you are going to remove the robot, you may as well just delete the board instead and tell the users to move to /b/.
I agree, but we both know that's never going to happen.
>>
>>502418
>but in practice it just sucks.
Nah, the problem here was it was put on a topic-less board. If you placed it on a board with a topic you'd most likely see actual effects, with one of the first and biggest one being most likely effectively killing generals.

Whether it does this or not, I'd actually like to see the experiment take place and have it placed on one of the big boards for a little bit of time like /pol/, /a/, /v/ or, fuck, even /vg/. It would be interesting at-least.
>>
>>502434
I'd like to see this too, if only to see how other boards could handle it. I can imagine the robot would do something to combat all the rampant shitposting on boards like /int/ and /pol/. Like you said, /r9k/ never really had a topic, which IMO is why the board is as terrible as it is.
>>
>>500238

If you're taking having a captcha seriously, you have to spend more time defending it than all the captcha-breaking services spend attacking it. Is there anyone left besides recaptcha who provides that service?

coolphp and wakaba probably let in bots with modern computer vision, but on the other hand they're not accessible to the blind, which recaptcha is.

>>500617

That was then and now is now!

>>500631

If you see some, get the ad URL (has /ados in it) and put it in feedback.

>>501776

>>501176

I think technical problems should be solved with technology and social problems should be solved with, um, socialism or something.

So tuning the robot to change human behavior is a dead end, and board culture is best enforced with moderation. Obviously janitors can only work so much and we're not going to have upvotes, so it's a little tenuous.
Then again, I think Futaba (2chan) has 5 different /b/s, so more than one isn't so bad.

Maybe that webcomic guy has some new ideas?

>>Dear Mr. Dev
With the site finished now, how do you deal with stupid questions?
>>
I got this weird-ass captcha earlier today. It was like, checkboxes and then when you solved it you had this long-ass code you had to paste. Never seen it on 4chan before, and it didn't happen again after that. Not sure if it's because I've been having internet problems today or because you're testing new things with the captcha, but I thought I'd report it.
>>
>>502602
Yea, those seem to be a newer type I think. It seems to show up if you have shitty internet or if you access a site with a proxy. I kinda like them over the normal recaptcha, as they don't seem as hellbent on trying to fuck you over and use you to go through as many things as possible.

Also, on the previous topic of the robot. Dev-kun, how heavy on the server resources do you think it would be if the robot was turned on globally or at-least for OP only? How heavy would it be if it was on /vg/ and/or /b/?

Tell me how do you think it could affect any of the boards you browse in a negative way.
>>
>>503741
The robot doesn't seem to do a lot to stop the daily shit threads on r9k however. Furthermore some of the boards with really shitty users like /v/, /tv/ and /int/ would just see it as a challenge to bypass the robot because their default mode is the high schooler mentality of "fuck authority telling me what to do, I'm not a little kid anymore I do what I want".

What if it applied only to OP posts?

That already exists, 4chan has an identification cookie that prevents you from ban evading. Unfortunately, deleting cookies and/or localstorage is even easier than resetting your IP.

The only real options to stop ban evaders for good are
>add user accounts and make creating a new account non-trivial

Except it's not? In-fact, it is the direct opposite. The robot enforces the natural concepts of 4chan. The only people it 'punishes' is memetards who have never heard of the notion of originally and not repeating the exact same thing 50,000 times and generalfags. The robot applied globally can only have a positive effect, whether it is for generating discussion or having fun and the only group who truly loses out is generalfag as they thrive by literally trying to fight against 4chan itself and memetards, but, people care about them even less than generalfags.

It doesn't even matter what positive or negative effects it could have. It is all worth it to have it on for at least a week as it would be outright hilarious and having it placed on /vg/ as well would be the funniest of them all.

The "robot" is a flawed script that prohibits normal conversation, and I'm not talking about in the way the people who want wordfilters removed mean either. Besides >>503757, simply having an image dump thread would be prohibited. That's only the tip of the iceberg, with practical use many more instances of legitimate posts stifled will become apparent as the robot tests the cultures of many different boards. It was only intended for /r9k/ for a reason.

There is no fix.
The way captchas work is entirely out of 4chan's hands.
They can only decide if they want to revert back to an older captcha or keep the current one.

The captcha really is not a problem though.

I can't use the non-legacy recaptcha in Chrome Version 51.0.2704.22. When I select to use legacy recaptcha it only works in the quick reply window, so essentially I can't post any threads in Chrome, been like this for a few months now with and without any extensions disabled.
>>
I keep getting only three types of captcha now- rivers, street numbers and street signs. Rivers and numbers NEVER work, so I just refresh till I get signs. These 3 repeat constantly, with rivers and numbers showing mostly.

I'm mobile posting and on a different network right now though so it might be different when I get home

I hit Report throttling last night and the last twenty or so catchpas were 5+ verification with 3/5 being "select x until none remain". When are the developers going to revamp the report system to something more objective requiring a selection of which rule the violating content breaks? Relying on the objectivity of your volunteer moderation staff to suss out the nebulous reason behind a report is a shit way of handling the sheer volume they receive and would produce clear grounds for moderating classified/fraudulent reports.

I use the same, and I'd like to ask the dev why legacy isn't the default anymore. I know when it was first changed over moot reported a massive decrease in failed captchas, which also affected how 4chan passes were a commodity, but it seems that recaptcha has caused more trouble long term when in the short term they seemed like a god send.

Could you offer a 4chan hosted alternative to google captcha? Similar to the infinitechannel captcha (though still required for every post not just every 24 hours) Google could be the default one and the 4chan one would have to be selected in the settings page so you don't have a massive increase in server load or whatever (if it would cause that)
difficulty could be really high

How does the captcha stop actual spam? I never see any spam. But I use the same captcha system (well, just Google Captcha) for my gaming forum registrations and still get human Pakistanis spamming me. Do they just ignore 4chan or what?
>>
>>514501
>for my gaming forum registrations
You see, there is a difference. The captchas here aren't for registration, they are for posting and reporting. If you had a capcha on every single post they make, they wouldn't be spamming. The exception is to people who have insane autism AND WANT TO SPAM. You can't stop those types of spam. It doesn't matter what type of system you want to put in place, it is a common fact it is easier to break something than defend it. If someone wants to spam, they will find a way to do it even if you have the strongest security in the world. The only thing you can truly do is attempt to discourage people from wanting to do it. Which is what captcha does since you still have to manually fill them out to spam unless someone goes out and makes a bot or neural network that can dish out at-least 80% on solving google image captchas.
>>
>>514501
>actual spam
Bot spam, yes. Other than that it slows humans down depending on how you use it. For example, you could "spam" the board manually but you'd be waiting about a minute between posts, as opposed to less than a second for a bot without a captcha stopping it.

Even with captcha you can spam using proxies and some software so long as that software can load the captcha without said captcha knowing it's being loaded outside of a browser (I think google has some checks for this). You'd also have to load the captcha through the proxy I think as google gets sent the IP from the transaction.

It's a lot of work.
>>
>>514523
>You'd also have to load the captcha through the proxy I think as google gets sent the IP from the transaction.
I can confirm this is not the case.

>>
>>514501
>How does the captcha stop actual spam?
Captchas exist to sort out who's human and who's a robot, therefore a human must be present for each post sent, if the captcha is 'unbreakable'
Here's a paper where people even used Google's Similar Image Search function to crack captchas.
https://www.blackhat.com/docs/asia-16/materials/asia-16-Sivakorn-Im-Not-a-Human-Breaking-the-Google-reCAPTCHA-wp.pdf

It also goes into detail about how they can give out 'one-click-captchas'.

Hey Mr.Dev I've gotten some "server not found" errors ONLY ON 4chan the few past weeks.
Is it just my internet being shit?
>>
>>514556
They could easily do this if they wanted to.
https://developers.google.com/recaptcha/docs/verify#api-request
There's an option in the API to send the users IP, to retrieve the captcha google would need your IP. Google could just compare them and invalidate the answers that don't match.

>Seems too nice to be MVB

>>
>>514611

You are not a nice guy.
>>
>>514609
I read this wrong. You receive the IP the user got the captcha from, so 4chan would be comparing it.

>>514623
What's wrong with MVB?
>>
>>514509
I ask because 99% of the time the spammers leave one off threads and that's it. If anything they'd get a lot more exposure on 4chan since mods sometimes don't act on reports for hours in exceptional circumstances (e.g. /tv/). I know that the spammers are human, I'm just curious as to why I only see them on traditional forums and not a place like 4chan. It's not like Pakistan is range banned here.

I'm more just curious as to what 4chan is doing. The google captcha system was so ineffectual that I had to remove it entirely and replace it with a simple Q&A pop-culture question that all Westerners know but befuddles the Pakistanis.

I don't know what you mean.
Google will get your IP address when you load any of their content like the gstatic for the image captcha, or the .css, or the .js files.
Google does not send 4chan the IP you used to achieve your valid g-recaptcha-response, look at the API response they send back to 4chan:
success?, timestamp, uniquecode, hostname (4chan), and error-codes.
No?
I can confirm myself that the IP used (proxy) to connect to google sites and solve the captcha can be different to the IP used (non proxy) to post to 4chan.

Anon, did you not say that your captchas were on registration only? Those are incredibly easy to bypass if you want to spam. You only need to manually make a few dozen accounts and then you bot spam post. There is a massive difference between a registration and post captcha.

As already said, the 4chan captchas are actually incredibly easy to bypass, it just requires effort. Effort most people really don't want to put in. You could easily reach old spam levels like Accel with using nothing but the native extension since it makes it incredibly easy to do. It just requires a bit of effort because you can't automate it all.

>>
>>514876
>Having to enter captcha every post though, willing to consider approaches there.

Could you make it so you get a certain number of captcha-free posts when you enter one successfully? For instance you enter captcha once, and then you get 5 posts without it. Or even just every other post is free of captcha. Something like that.

I think this would be less prone to spam than the once-per-24-hours model.
>>
>>514888
I'd say 2:1 or 3:1 approach would be better than a 1:1 or 1:5. This way it still prevents lots of spam, but, it still serves to make heavy posting life less painful.
>>
>>514876
>Having to enter captcha every post though, willing to consider approaches there.

>>

OP, I raise you a question: could we get our own captcha's? Why are we forced to use Google's?

Pic related.
>>
>>514953
Read the thread.
>>
>>499794
It's absolute shit!

You can't operate it with the keyboard.
The popup breaks on older browsers.
The verification expires after two minutes for apparently no reason.
The solutions are often wrong or impssible, select all water when there's no water visible.
The javascript free version overlaps with other elements on the page, making the paste box impossible to see and the paste text impossible to copy.
The captcha often breaks for 'invalid api parameters' and the page requires a refresh.
At one point the captcha popup would spawn at the center of the screen, and if your browser wasn't there it'd spawn off the viewpoint and be unusable.
Occasionally the hint text is missing.
Sometimes the captca fucks up the rest of the post form, removing other fields like post, name, options and file.
(you need to allow longer posts on /qa/)
>>
>>514969
It's heavy as fuck in general, an old laptop I have has no problem with 4chan
otherwise but when the captcha loads it overheats.
In general it doesn't work and if it did I still wouldn't use it.

There's more that I don't remember because I try to avoid it at all costs.

Now, thankfully you can use the legacy captcha on the quick reply.
But not when making a thread or checking for a ban status. As a result I haven't made
a single thread after the new capcha was introduced. Also I'm forced to try to make a
post to see if I'm still banned.

So one can't build up a lot of captchas and then spam a board with proxies and new threads, wiping off half the catalog.
>>
>>515044
It used to be around 10 minutes.

2 minutes makes it completely pointless to cache captchas and necessitates buying a 4chan Gold Account if you want to dump images or something.

And then of course you run the risk of being banned by 4chan Gold Account number for something that you shouldn't have been banned for.
>>
>>515055

If you're going to use a "risk analysis" captcha, you should use all the info you have. All of these things indicate a post is more likely to be spam:

- hyperlinks
- non-ASCII characters
- posting an image
- posting across multiple boards
- posting on NSFW boards

The number of captchas required to make low-risk posts can be reduced greatly or even eliminated if the post is low-risk enough.
