If anything, the character's have gotten MORE expressive. Yes, that means exaggerating as well. Did you even watch today's episode? Rarity fucking carried it with her emotions and reactions.
Don't let nostalgia skew your view. The animations and expressiveness have only gotten better as the show goes on.
