Why does /k/ love pic related so much, and why is it still in use amongst professional militaries? It's a fifty-year-old bolt-action rifle made of wood for chrissakes. Surely there are better weapons that /k/ommandos can agree are fantastic?

Because for a while they were dirt cheap, and decently accurate for the price. Plus, it's a neat gun if you like history. Mine's stamped as Tula from 1942. That plant got evacuated in 1941 during operation Barbarosa and the machines moved to a secondary site further east near the ivastek plant. There's a high likelyhood my rifle saw action on the eastern front and I can still fire it today.
