As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.
The German love affair with the humble half-track can be traced all the way from 1917, when Benz had patented the first German medium semi-tracked tractor. As the German Army continued to refit and rearm through the 1930s, half-track designs exploded in permutations, and became known collectively under the heading of SdKfz – Sonderkraft-fahrzeug (special motor vehicle). The most esoteric of these myriad designs was perhaps a diminutive vehicle known as the Kettenkrad. From 1939, leapfrogging off earlier patents for “tracked motorcycles”, NSU Werke of Neckarsulm, Germany built a number of prototypes of a hybrid bike and trailer transports. Enthusiastically received, the designs were quickly accepted into service by June 1941 as the Kleines Kettenkraftrad SdKfz 2, or Kettenkrad. Stoewer Werke in 1943 was also invited to produce the vehicles, along with other firms like the French SIMCA providing parts. The Kettenkrad was a strange looking transport: frontally a bike, with wheel, forks and handlebars, its rear was enclosed by a bodywork that was supported by two large sets of tracks. Unlike other half-tracks, it used an Opel Olympia engine, which could potentially reach 50 km/h (but practically never used over 40) and could steer either by using the handlebars or by varying the speed of the tracks. In total, some 8345 were officially produced by the war’s end, but interestingly, an estimated by 550 continued to be produced by NSU for peacetime use, or by independent contractors or collectors. The vast majority, however, were lost on the Eastern Front.

I thought I’d start the new wave of threads with something a little more light hearted, and perhaps a little less content heavy, after the grim deluge of posts that assailed you in the weeks beforehand. For those of you that missed the previous thread, I ended up posting it in the middle of the week due to my timetable being all jumbled up, so I do apologise for that. Please note that threads will still be posted at the usual time at the start of the weekend or a little bit before. Actually, in relation to the WWI megathreads, what did you guys think? I know one person suggested it was perhaps more appropriate for /his/, and certainly, it deviated from tanks quite a bit, so I’m wondering what the overall consensus was.
As far as the Kettenkrad goes, there were apparently two submodels, the SdKfz 2/1, which mounted a small backpack spool in the infantry pattern, and the SdKfz 2/2 had two spools that were much larger and located behind the driver on a frame. In the late war, stretched HK 102 suspensions were used to create the “Springer” demolitions vehicles, but only around 50 were ever produced by NSU. In addition, Kettenkrads had an enormous amount of variation due to the plethora of trailer designs that were proliferated along with their production, such as specialised cable drum mounting device sporting trailers and modified standard infantry carts.
I’m fairly lost as to what to do next at this point, as I want to leave a bit of a gap before I get onto the other tanks of WWI. Any suggestions?

Iran has unveiled a new tank. The Tiam appears to be an eclectic fusion of Chinese and US equipment, as well as obvious Russian influences. The hull seems to be derived from a US M47M (an M47 with an M60A1 engine), and the turret housing a 105 mm is similar to a Type 59/69 of Chinese origin. On the same day, refurbished Chieftains (Shirs) and T-62s were also exhibited, but the new “Karrar”, supposedly an analogue to the T-90A, was noticeably omitted.
Denmark, in a process to replace its 155 mm M109A3 howitzers, has prequalified five different contenders for its competition, according to the FMI. BAE, Elbit, Hanwha, HSW and Nexter are the confirmed candidates, and said prequalification is based entirely off manufacturing and delivery concerns, rather than an evaluation of the capabilities of the platforms being offered.
The United States Marine Corps is also planning to buy or lease Israeli Trophy Active Protection Systems (APS) for its inventory of M1 Abrams main battle tanks, according to deputy commandant of the USMC Lt Gen. Robert Walsh. Walsh, in the same announcement voiced recommendations to the Army to follow suit for the M1A2 and Strykers, citing the sustained period of development time an indigenous APS would require.
Poland is set to buy 96 self-propelled 120 mm Rak mortar systems, worth at least $320-325 million USD. 8 mortar companies of the Polish Army are set to receive the Raks, including AWD command post vehicles.
The Japanese MoD has awarded BAE a contract for 30 new AAV7A1s. Built to the RAM/RS standard, the contract will include tools, testing aids and equipment.
Russian has ordered an additional 20 BTR-82A APCs for its armed forces. The vehicles are set to be delivered by the end of the year under the State Defence Order for 2016.

I'm 25 (look even younger) and I HATE having to interact with gun store workers.
