A few years ago I read a story on reddit that kind of stuck with me for some reason.
A (future redditor) submarine sailor was on his sub and for some reason (technical or human error) the sub started diving suddenly and uncontrollably. The was a guy who was supposed to do his job and respond to this event to stop the dive and level out/surface. Instead though he just crouched down and quietly panicked and wouldn't respond to anyone while the sub continued to fall. Other people had trained for his position and they stepped up and performed his duties and the incident...

Original hand-fitted parts together were not interchangeable. Modern production and design allowed for interchangeable parts, which was less of a bitch to handle. You didn't need to number the parts, because they were no longer unique to the weapon.

moving to chicago for a job, think i might need my first gun for self-defence. you know, just in case. I also am a big fan of recreational shooting, I usually go skeet shooting with my grandfather's remington from the late 1930's (one of the last models you could get in the US before the war, in great shape, my dad and I fixed it up as a father / son thing).
i was looking at either a sig sauer p220 in .45, or a p229 in 9mm.
What should a total gun noob look for in his first piece of hardware? I want a solid, reliable, high-quality piece...

9mm is cheaper. Handguns are hard to git gud with, you'll need to practice a lot.
Muzzle discipline is key, religiously keeping your booger hook off the bang switch will get you killed. Your presentation of the firearm should include taking it off safe and having the distal phalange of your digitus secundus resting on the mechanism which actuates the firing sequence.

How would war (on both a strategic and tactical level) change if we came out with bombs equaling or exceeding nuclear weapon yields without the radiation issues? Would MAD now be more of a high speed battle of attrition rather than an assumed death pact or would we simply blow each other up so much without worry that all the dust and fires would end up being nearly as bad in the short term vs isolated but highly toxic fallout plumes from major targets getting hit?

The radiation is only a minor part of MAD. There would be little to no change in strategic doctrine, although you might see use of .5-1kt weapons tactically with less international blowback.

ohh nuclear war okay first thing first read the Kearny report it was written way back during the cold war even during the hight of the war fallout risk was minimal as fallout is generated by ineficent use of fission material and ground level detonation which is something modern hydrogen bombs avoid. So /k, I got my tax return and want to get a gun with it. I'm massive poorfag, so this is going to be my second gun, and first handgun.
I've shot handguns plenty before, so experience isn't an issue. The issue is cost.
I have ~$350 to drop, and I'd prefer to get a pistol and have a little left over to cover shipping and FFL within that limit. I reside in Commiefornia, so limitations of law are a consideration I have to take.
My choice so far has been the P64 Makarov. I like the look, and the gun has decent reviews. Any other suggestions/...

Heard the P64 is cheap. It's not a "real" Makarov either.
Buy a Bulgarian Makarov for $300. That's what I got and I love it. Ammo isn't too bad either - 15$ for 50 Tulammo.
But don't buy a FEG or P64.

.458 socom ammo costs like twice as much as .50 beo. Plus you can get the ball tickling satisfaction of having a half inch projectile. .458 is just spending a shit load to come really close to owning the biggest caliber ar you can but not quite making it imo
