> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

The origins of the Boyevaya Mashina Pekhota (BMP) lay in the understanding that the next war would be fought in the shadow of the mushroom cloud. The Soviets were pioneers in this regard, not only resulting in a new vehicle, but a radical reorganisation of the Red Army. The GBTU in the 1950s issued a design based around a new armament system in a one man turret, known as the 2A28 Grom 73 mm low pressure gun. The Grom was powerful, employing ammunition similar to the warheads found on the RPG-7 sans propelling charge, and the turret also sported a 9M14 Maltyuka ATGM providing substantial firepower. While the weaponry was preset, the automotive particulars were still in debate, with concerns that a fully tracked design would be maintenance heavy and costly. Several KBs were invited to compete for this component, and after testing of numerous prototypes at Rzhev and Kubinka, the Isakov Object 765 was selected, it having the important distinction of a front mounted engine allowing rear dismounts. 1966-67 saw trials that changed minor features, before being accepted into service by 1969. Friction arose over the prospective cost of the BMP, with a high-low compromise reached after Khrushchev’s departure, for 1 BMP to 2 BTR companies as a rule of thumb. In 1970, the definitive BMP-1 emerged, with new NBC filters, a 9M14M and a 20 cm hull extension for better amphibiousness. Experience of the Middle East wars would also lead to the BMP-1P, with improved SACLOS ATGMs and smoke launchers, a prelude to the BMP-2.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
The experience of the BMP-1 in the Middle East was not a happy one. Employed against Israel in 1973, around 40-60 of Egypt’s BMPs were destroyed or captured, and 50-60 Syrian BMP-1s. Certainly, the consensus was that the BMP was fast, using the new pattern of T-64 tracks and a simple driving yoke steering system, yet it suffered from a litany of shortcomings. The interior was too cramped for a full complement of 8 troops, and hatches had to be left open for the passengers as it became unbearably hot in operation, doubly so in the Middle East. Furthermore, its vaunted armaments, the Grom and Maltyuka were both severely inefficient in combat, as the Syrians found that the Grom was effective only at close ranges of less than 500 m and the 9M14M was hobbled by its inaccurate MCLOS guidance compounded by the gunner’s conditions in the vehicle. Its armour, furthermore, although deemed proof against 20 mm NATO autocannons frontally, was vulnerable to Israeli .50 cal machineguns around its rear turret. The worst fears of the Soviets, the mechanical complexity of the BMP not allowing easy field repairs, came true for the Syrians, as half their IFVs had to be abandoned due to mechanical fault. Additionally, the unusual design of the BMP and its various features had demanded bold new tactics, which the Soviets had had time to develop and employ in peacetime, but not their Arab export partners. These factors all led to a decisive victory for Israel, and a reassessment by GBTU – as did the Americans, taking note of these issues as well, which would factor in the much later Bradley. As for Afghanistan, that’s a whole other story, with an even unhappier outcome…

Addendum: I do hope people found my WWI booklist last week somewhat helpful as a reader’s guide to all the references out there. Seems actually rather appropriate during the 100th anniversary of Verdun and near enough to the Somme.

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.

Israel’s Namer CEV had passed a series of operational milestones, overcoming deep terrain and emplacing a self-deploying bridge.
Russian diplomatic action has resulted in the return of a Magach tank captured during the 1982 Lebanon War to the state of Israel, transferred from Syria to Israel. However, there has been no concrete information regarding the possible repatriation of missing IDF personnel involved in the capture of said tank.
The Argentine Army has unveiled a prototype for its TAM medium tank modernisation programme, in cooperation with Elbit, IMI and Tadiran. The TAM 2IP, a successor to the 2013 2C prototype, was shown on 29 May with new armour based on IMI’s Iron Wall.
Slovakia’s MSM has exhibited a new 8x8 IFV dubbed the Corsac, adapted from the GDELS Steyr Pandur II APC. The vehicle was built to the specifications of the Slovak Army, its hull rated for STANAG 4569 L2 ballistic protection and incorporates a Turra 30 remote-operated turret.
Turkey at its Efes-2016 Combined Joint Live Fire Exercise on May 30 and 31 in Anatolia displayed its Altay next generation MBT, courtesy of Otokar. In addition to the MBT, the Tulpar and Arma AFVs were also on exhibit.
Canada’s Armatech has revealed its new modular survivability and mobility upgrade called Black Knight at the annual Canadian Security exposition (CANSEC). An evolution of the earlier Orca upgrade, it can be fitted to Humvees all the way to heavy vehicles such as the LAV-III and the Bradley.
BAE Systems’ has delivered two of its Armoured Modular Vehicles (AMV35s) to Australia after its announcement to participate in the Land 400 modernisation tender. Built by Patria with a BAE Hagglunds E35 turret, 223 more are expected to be completed, should BAE be selected as a finalist for the contract.

And that’s all for now.

Aim with the bead, just make sure you cant see the top of the rib

A lot of instructors tell you not to aim with the bead, at least in the UK. I think its so you have two eyes on the clay or something, but I don't really know why.
>>
Use the bead and point it slightly under the pigeon (shot pattern varies by gun so you will have to practice). Depending on the angle of flight you have to lead it too. Also have you patterned the gun?

Why so shitty?

>In 1977, NATO members signed an agreement to select a second, smaller caliber cartridge to replace the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.[8] Of the cartridges tendered, the 5.56×45mm NATO was successful, but not the 55 gr M193 round used by the U.S. at that time. The wounds produced by the M193 round were so devastating that many[9] consider it to be inhumane.[10][11] Instead, the Belgian 62 gr SS109 round was chosen for standardization. The SS109 used a heavier bullet with a steel tip and had a lower muzzle velocity for better long-range performance, specifically to meet a requirement that the bullet be able to penetrate through one side of a steel helmet at 600 meters. This requirement made the SS109 (M855) round less capable of fragmentation than the M193 and was considered more humane.[12]

>Combat operations the past few months have again highlighted terminal performance deficiencies with 5.56×45mm 62 gr. M855 FMJ. These problems have primarily been manifested as inadequate incapacitation of enemy forces despite them being hit multiple times by M855 bullets. These failures appear to be associated with the bullets exiting the body of the enemy soldier without yawing and fragmenting.

>This failure to yaw and fragment can be caused by reduced impact velocities as when fired from short barrel weapons or when the range increases.

>Although all SS109/M855 types must be 62 gr. FMJ bullets constructed with a steel penetrator in the nose, the composition, thickness, and relative weights of the jackets, penetrators, and cores are quite variable, as are the types and position of the cannelures. Because of the significant differences in construction between bullets within the SS109/M855 category, terminal performance is quite variable – with differences noted in yaw, fragmentation, and penetration depths. Luke Haag's papers in the AFTE Journal (33(1):11–28, Winter 2001) also describes this problem.

I thought armies shot to kill and incapacitate.
What's the humane concern about?

Do hunters even use 5.56x45mm?

If we ever fight against an enemy that uses body Armour people wont be complaining.

I still wouldn't want a hole punching though any part of my body by any kind of round. If we didn't force ourselves to treat enemy wounded their casualty rates would be sky high as lack of medical care would kill thousands.

SS109 was selected because it could penetrate Soviet helmets, not for any wounding abilities. Militaries of the world don't even take lethality into consideration when selecting calibers. The driving force behind selecting the SS109 was long range penetration and accuracy at distance.

I'm getting my first AR-15 today as it is my birthday. I have a general idea as to what I want to do with it but I'm curious if there's any absolute essentials I should have for the rifle.

I've been around weapons all my life, I currently have two .22 rifles and one handgun stored away in my room, so this would be my first intermediate-caliber weapon. I'm looking more for suggestions and what /k/ommandos think are essential for an AR platform. Pic related, but I'm not sure if this is the rifle I'm getting.

A sighting system of some type. This could be a red dot, scope, or just irons, tho ide recommend something other then buis for this

A good white light and mount. If the rifle is going to have even the possibility of defensive use, it needs this.

Good mags, at least 6.

Military training thread

ITT: we discuss the real purpose of contemporary military training
ITT: I raise some issues deriving from the fact better warrior training can be achieved privately by most individuals, without joining the army.
I also argue such private training might be best training for most practical purposes.

I have detailed my views in the following 4 posts.

TL;DR =
### For those of us who still want to adhere to such ideal of:
>self-sufficient politically conscious citizens who are ALSO good prepped warriors ready to defend their loved one
is there something the army life can give that cannot be achieved by reading books, training with loyal friends, and learning /fit/, /k/, /out/, and /ck/ skills on our own?

>moral issue
Some people here on /k/ celebrate the army and the military in general. But, apparently, unless you are some kind of officer, special ops, or have some special role (e.g. doctor, mission planner, sharpshooter), life in the army means endless training which is not meant to boost your skills but just to dumb you down.
This "dumbing down" is necessary to make you a functioning gear in a bigger apparatus.
The aim of most of this training is to transform you into an order-answering robot; not to transform you into a better human being.

I think the moral issue is this: most people who celebrate the army life either refer to specific roles (e.g. combat roles, officers, etc.) or they do refer to some kind of idealized militia of citizen-warriors, who do their duty and yet participate democratic choices within the walls of a besieged town.
Most people think:
>I want to be a soldier.
As a consequence, they conclude:
>It would be amazing to join the army
However, what they really have in mind is:
>I want to be an authentic warrior
And they should realize:
>Most of people in the army are not warriors. They are just mindless gears in a big machine -- cannon fodder at best. Labour hands and nothing more.

With this, I do not mean to same there is little honour in those who choose to serve. I respect their choice, but I have come to realize their grunt daily life is not the warrior life many have in mind.

>strategic issue
It goes unsaid, however, that the self-sufficient and autonomous warrior advertised by ancient textbooks is a figure that does not work very well in contemporary conflicts.
You can play the
>knight
>samurai
>Roman legionnaire
In your backyard. At best, you can be
>guerilla fighter
>militiamen
>war prepper
But in the reality of recent (and not so recent times) wars have little to do with militiamen and vigilante preppers. Rather, they have a lot to do with logistics, moving goods and weapon system around, and transforming everything into a chess game with the help of computers, analysits, and a horde of zombies that will go here and there without questioning why -- just because it is their job to do so.
This kind of transition was already true even during Roman age.
>At the times of the Republic, the Roman legionnaire was still a warrior-citizen and a militiaman prepper.
>At the times of the Empire, Roman army became an army of engineers and proletarians, who fought to earn wage and not necessarily for the country. Well, if anything, they sided with the military leaders who ensured their rights and supported their vets (e.g. Caesar)
The former man, the warrior-citizen of our dreams, is good to defend a tribe, a village, or a city.
However, if you want to defend an Empire, or to expand it, what you are looking for is the second kind of man: the professional. However, the professional is just a waged pair of arms and legs, with a brain proportional to his combat (or logistic role). No special honour, just law-abiding servicemen.

The issue here is not just moral, but strategic: if you have an Empire, you need an army of zombies/grunts, not of citizens. Nowadays many zombies/grunts are incidentally also citizen just because they are entitled to their vote. But in most missions they participate because it's their job, and not because of some national ideals. In fact, politics is usually banned from the army daily workings.
