Kurgabinsk Edition

> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

No sooner had the BMP-1P been rolled out than the GBTU commissioned further efforts in improving the glaring inadequacies of the IFV that had been painfully explicated in the Middle East. In 1974, two parallel ventures, Object 675/681 and Object 768/769 (probably from teams at Chelyabinsk and Kurgan) were undertaken, with all four prototype designs incorporating a two man turret, a rectification of the drawbacks of the one-man turret in the BMP-1, with the commander being relocated to the turret. This movement of the commander’s station removed the infrared searchlight protruding from the hull, allowing a non-obstructed 360 degree view and weapon traverse. However, a bigger turret meant less room in the transport compartment, which the Object 768/769 series attempted to deal with via an elongated hull. In 1972, weaponry was selected, an improved 73 mm, the Zarnitsa, fixed much of the range drop-off apparent with the Grom, and was installed on the Object 681 and 768, while the 30 mm 2A42 autocannon was trialed on the 675 and 769. All vehicles also retained a 9Sh119 with a Fagot or Konkurs missile, with an interior firing position. The 675 emerged as the winning “BMP-2” in 1977, with the longer hulls requiring factory retooling. Its 30 mm also had far superior range (2-4 km), which made dealing with helicopter threats and dispersed infantry more realistic, and more importantly, made the BMP a viable fire support vehicle for leading tank groups. Later upgrades included lead-impregnated applique armour and command modules in the BMP-2K.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
Much like the BMP-1, the BMP-2 would see extensive use in the Middle East, this time in the rugged foothills of Afghanistan. It is now well known that the comprehensive elevation and traverse offered by the BMP-2 was greatly prized in fighting in high altitudes, and certainly the 2A42 had a substantial amount of effectiveness against infantry positions. However, its side armour was not adequate against concentrated enemy heavy machinegun fire, which prompted immediate depot rebuilds, dubbed the BMP-2D, with an extra 10 mm of spaced applique armour, and an extra panel added to the rear of the turret, perhaps a lesson learnt from the Israeli conflicts. The cramped configuration of the BMP-2 also proved to be problematic, as extended operations and patrols typically ended up stowing all excess equipment and supplies on the exterior of the vehicle, making it vulnerable to loss from either mundane falling off or in combat. The interior was not much better than the BMP-1 in crew comfort either, as it would get very hot in Afghan conditions, exacerbated by a low silhouette. However, in anecdotal terms, it appeared to be a lot more successful than its predecessor in Afghanistan.
Interesting thing I read while ago about the Soviets in Afghanistan, throughout their occupation, they established hundreds of “zastavas” or small checkpoints and holdouts for soldiers on patrol. From 1979-89, according to the Soviets, not a single zastava fell to the mujahedin, which, if true, is an intriguing insight into Soviet base communications and tenacity in the field.

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.

Exercise Anakonda has commenced in Poland with a multinational involvement including a significant US military presence, comprising 31,000 soldiers from 24 countries. The activities in the proceedings include a mock air assault operation, live fire drills, field training and cyber and electronic warfare exercises, among others. Unfortunately, it appears that one Polish civilian has been killed in a collision with a military convoy.
Raytheon’s Mission Support and Modernization business core competency is currently examining stockpiles of M60 Patton tanks worldwide, and in concert with the US Army to compile upgrade packages to sustain their combat viability into the future. Upgrades include comprehensive armour improvements, as well as gun and engine changes, and some other features like Jordan’s FCS upgrades.
Around 1536 companies have confirmed their attendance at Eurosatory in Paris next week, with the US continuing to be a dominating foreign presence, booking 136 companies. A notable increase in Latin American involvement has been seen, with a debut by Colombia as well as record attendances by other countries such as Brazil and Argentina.
Brazil has received a total of 50 armoured vehicles from the US Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program. This includes 12 M113A2 APCs, 34 M577A2 command vehicles and 4 M88A1 ARVs.
Portugal has had its final Pandur II vehicles delivered from GDELS this week. 14 vehicles was delivered, completing a final batch of 22, of a totally contracted 188 Pandur IIs of varying patterns.
The Republic of Korea Army plans to deploy 600 K806 and K808 armoured vehicles from 2016 to 2020. The two vehicles form Hyundai Rotem’s bid for the DAPA’s wheeled AFV project, in response to a shortage of all-terrain vehicles to transport infantry.

And that’s all for now.

What was the first pistol you guys purchased? I've never owned a gun and I'm looking for something to just take to range on the weekends for fun now. Pic related is the weapon I'd choose based on looks alone but it's a bit pricey. I'd probably be looking to spend no more than $500, is that too little? Would it be cheaper to go to a gun show instead of a store? I live in NY state :/

Not at indoor ranges, no.

You might order a shorter barrel and order some #1 lead shot loads, though.

With this shooting being far worse than Sandy hook a gun run in the coming months and an ammo run is almost a given.

Let's discuss the impending runs and potentially how bad it could get if hillary wins.

How high will prices go?
What sort of ammo will become hard to find or very expensive?

Will ARs become the first to go?

Discuss.

I liked it, yes the original had issues but with the modifications I really liked it. It was well balanced, comfortable and easy to use.

There will be people who bitch and moan about it but they probably never handled it and only listened to the memes.

Overall a good weapon, sometimes a bitch to clean but I liked it.
