If armor doesn't stand up to weaponry, there is not enough of it being used. A large gun platform that's armored enough to withstand several direct hits, the concept isn't obsolete just because no modernized ones exist. Battleships aren't obsolete any more than a tank is obsolete.

Seriously- my advice is to find the largest caliber you are comfortable with using AND have the money to train with regularly. A .45 acp will be less effective if you rarely train with it than a 9mm you do.
I don't ever see myself wanting/buying anything bigger than a fifty.

you want to fly a plane extremely close to another plane so that you can shoot it with some special bullets that might cause the plane to suffer some damage several days later, but only if it's made of a certain kind of material?
just shoot a missile at it. the missile will blow up the plane when it hits the plane, and you don't have to fool around with flying close or having special bullets or waiting around for it to take effect. you just fire the missile, and a few seconds later, the plane is dead.
