Squirrel Boy gets so much shit for being everything Duckman isn't despite one being for kids and another being for adults. Pretty unfair if you ask me but this was during everyone's least favorite era of CN so it's understandable.

Of all the wasted potential in this show the lack of friendship between the main cast(Bolin and Korra especially) hurts the most. How much better would B1 be if the relationship drama was replaced with more of these two paling around?

This. I Always felt like Korra shouldn't have been interested in Romance at all. She'd never had friends her own age and it would've been cool to see her having some and interacting with them and just being bros.
I've wondered about this, too. But it's sort of impossible to know, because Bolin's character for most of the series is predicated on the fact that Korra never considers him as a serious partner. In the end, Bolin was just "the comic-relief guy," as we all feared (with a dash of "Hey, I have special bending abilities now" thrown in for good measure).
The track of Bolin's character arc would be fairly different if he had a romantic interest, for the duration of the series, who was as gritty, practical, and forthright as he.
