Arch or gentoo? I'm looking to use it for everyday use. I'm an intermediate Linux user.

For everyday use, I'd recommend Arch over Gentoo since Gentoo is based around compiling everything you install.
However, there are cases in which you might want to use Gentoo instead, namely if you have a decent computer and don't mind compile times or if you don't like systemd and would rather use something like openrc. Gentoo also gives you an even higher degree of control over your system than Arch does, so that's also something to consider.

My laptop shuts down when I close the lid.
Has anyone encountered this problem? I've owned this ASUS Q550L laptop for about a year now (got it in February 2015) and all of a sudden it's been giving me this problem. The problem is that when I close the lid and then open the laptop, it restarts the entire laptop. And sometimes it takes forever to boot up before finally displaying a screen that says it's encountered a problem, which it doesn't go into detail.
I did a full recovery on this laptop and restored it to factory settings but I still have this problem. I checked the settings for when I close the lid and it says the laptop should just be in sleep mode. Anyone know why my computer is shutting down and restarting when I close the lid?
Have you checked some BIOS settings by accident?

I wouldn't know how to get to BIOS, so I don't think so. Also, I think it's a bigger problem than a preference setting since when my laptop is starting up from the reboot it doesn't start properly and has to be shut down manually.
I will look at the BIO settings though just in case, but I do not know how to get there or what to look for.

A long time ago I played a game online.
I have been trying to find it again but I have been unsuccessfull because all I can remember are some vague descriptions:
It was a point and click game. You where a white blob legs and had to move around a pink landscape covered with mushrooms. Eventually you had to hunt for white rabbit like creatures and fine a mate.
I also remember the game having 3 more levels or "ideas" as they where called. in one of them you played as the same white blob but where now in a dark world. in the next you played as a sort of spiral galaxy like beign and where in a neon light world. And the final one seemend to be more of a puzzle game.

Ive just bought my new R9 390. Well, there isnt any rest for the wicked and, in my pursuit for a decent PC for gaming, i seek visual nourishment from a new CPU. I am currently running an AMD FX 8320, so what would be a smart upgrade for ~$300-400
That price range is mostly based off of what i was seeing for decent GPU's on the market. Im well open to suggestions that offer great preformance for a cheaper price if possible (obviously).

I've never been able to consistently enjoy anime* until Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Personally I don't care for modern politics, but I love the pseudohistorical mythos that LOTGH portrays, sort of like Tolkien's work. Is there anything else that I might enjoy as much? I would prefer no lewdity/giant boobs and minimal humor, as well as nothing like your stereotypical anime with giant swords and harry-potter-esque teen protagonists.
*I watched the pilots of Soul Eater and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, seeing no value. For a time I seemed to find enjoyment in Noragami, but it had too much of that stereotypical anime element [see above.]

Very little anime is quite like LoGH. Have you seen all of it? 110 eps plus two great movies (My conquest is the sea of stars, Overture to a new war), and one mediocre one (Golden Wings). There is also the 52 side story episodes but they kind of suck compared to the main series
Look into Crest of the Stars, that is the only anime franchise I can think of that you would most definitely like, and I've seen hundreds. I could recommend so many great anime similar to LoGH, but they all have some kind of anime stereotype involved. Like Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still, or Gunbuster. Both I would rate above LoGH, but Gunbuster has lots of fanservice and Giant Robo is unrealistic and the protagonist is a child
You might like Kino no Tabi, It's pretty short, but it's really good and it doesn't fall into to many anime-ey tropes I can think of.
Also I really like Mouryou no Hako, it's pretty fantastic, you'll be turned off by the first episode though because it's seen from the victim's perspective.

Why buy an OS?
SSDs are kind of nice.
Not bad at all.
With your budget you got good stuff. If you can't afford an SSD oh well but they do speed up the OS.
I would get an SSD and get a 3 TB HDD whenever I can afford it later on.
I would also pirate Windows and save a hundred bucks to spend on hardware but nothing wrong with buying it, it's the right thing to do.
I have 16 GB of ram and know I won't need any more so I would consider getting 4 sticks of 4 GB instead of two sticks of 8.
I would spend a little less on the case. I always have spend around 30-40 on cases especially without PSU to use that money on other hardware. I don't need my interior to look good enough to eat off of.
I'd get a cheaper PSU (around 60-70 $) and spend that on hardware (either SSD or stronger cpu).
