Crystal is great you'll have a blast
The ascetic is insanely nostalgic for me so I'm bias but I love the comfey laid back feel of Johoto, the fact that there's no villain team trying to capture what ever God Pokemon and going back to Kanto is really interesting.
It has problems like the biggest level curve in any Pokemom game, lack of rematches with gym leaders and the Elite 4 always being in the 40's and awful pokemon distribution but play them once

They literally just introduced Mega Evolution. They won't introduce anything "shark jumping" again already. Sun & Moon will, at most, introduce another Primal Reversion that is basically just a different kind of Mega.
Everyone is talking about Synchro like it's gonna be fucking huge but I believe it'll simply be something like ordinary stat boosts depending on the crystals you have in your bracelet. Fucking no one talks about the fact that the bracelets have multiple fucking slots...
