What was your Pokemon experience like in High school? Middle school/college times welcome too. I'm mostly interested in how peoples' view of Pokemon changed as they got older. I want to hear about it.
I was in High School for the duration of gen 4. Shit was hype.
DP had that secret hype where nobody wanted to admit it but the mention of it made motherfuckers eyes light up. I spent freshman year training mons and sophmore year stomping classmates in secret
Platinum era was a bit less ubiquitous than DP, but damn was it fun. I kept my main teams on Diamond...

I was in highschool when firered/leafgreen came out and someone discovered VBA, which immediately was installed on all school computers and everyone spent hours playing pokemon instead of doing their work
I was the only one who beat it
I was in 10th grade when Pokemon SoulSilver came out. I had abandoned Pokemon in Gen 3 but got a DS after seeing commercials for Soul Silver. Turns out I was but one of many people who experienced this Pokemon renaissance and for the rest of the year there were tons of people walking around with pokewalkers and DS's. Rest of High School saw a decline in people playing Pokemon but myself and a decent amount of others were still hype about Black and White. Overall, a pretty good experience.
I stopped playing some time around middle school, I had an emulator for leafgreen on my phone for like a month
I've only recently gotten back into Pokemon

So I wanted to play Pokemon HGSS and I have the original 3ds xl. The games load slow and specially the controls. I'm just wondering for those that has the N3DS does the Pokemon DS games load better and play better like it was on DS/DSI?

No. The only games that play better on New 3DS are Sm4sh, Monster Hunter 4U, and Hyrule Warriors. No changes in performance to any other games past or present.

it's got just the right amount of heroic anime bullshit crescendos and partner's theme mixed in to make my feels ache
So I hear a lot of people complaining about smogon, that they ban too many pokemon and teams are all to similar. I then look at vgc '16, where there are less bans and everyone is literally playing the same team. So banning too many pokemon is no good but banning too few is also a problem.
So what is a good balance between too many bans and too few? How do you determine how healthy a format is and how would you build a format that has diversity and variety of strategies?
The people at VGC are just really shit and full of pussies who don't have the balls to make an anti-meta team.

The truth is, the way the format is presented you need kyogre or groudon. Their primals are just too powerful. For your next legendary, because you are going to use two of the restricted pokemon, you have 13 to choose from but xerneas, raquaza, yveltal and dialga are probably the best choices. So almost 100% of teams will have those 2 of those 6 pokemon. From there you can try doing any counter meta crap you want but gimmicks don't seems as strong as the raw power of say mega-mom or the sleep control of smeargle.

Playing anti-meta isn't too difficult though. There are a few nice restricted slots that can take on specific threats. Ho-oh can take anything from Xerneas and special Groudon (and physical Groudon if no rock slide), Palkia has a good matchup against both Primals, and so on. I think people are just being overly cautious with this new meta, with this mindset that you have to go standard or you'll fail. I was using a primal Kyogre team early on and got demolished game after game, then switched to a no-primal...

Ok rank the most important thing to define a gen: The catmons, forget all bias of gens and just honestly pick the cats on merit
Ex:
Espeon > Meowth > Meowstic = Skitty > Purlion > Glameow
Meowstiq > Meowth > Glameow > Skitty = Purlion
Espeon isn't a cat pokemon. Mewoth is high due to Persian in gen 1.
