Pretty good. They changed leveling so you can mainly just focus on your class quests with you only occasionally needing to do a planet questline. Companions are a lot better now too since gear for them is aesthetic only and they're conversations unlock based on story progress instead of spamming them with gifts.

What is it about this game that bugs me so much? The gameplay isn't offensively bad, but I think it must be the writing. It just feels so fucking smug and 'quirky'/faux-nerdy to me

I've honestly only really played the Mario Kart games and Sonic Transformed, so I couldn't say, but I always see this game and Diddy Kong Racing get mountains of praise. What do CTR and DKR do differently that put them above the others?
Also how does the first Sonic & Sega Racing compare to Transformed? I'm curious.
