It's popular because it's popular.
I enjoy the game as long as I have a friend or someone nearby to interact with and play it with. The other day I was just looking for a Magikarp on the way home from work and this gaggle of excited Asian girls swept me up and carried me along with them for a few hours. Couldn't understand a word they were saying, but it was fun as fuck. They all gave me a big group hug when I had to leave.

FFXIV is pretty content with recycling the same thing every 2 patches, even Heavensward was just a repeat of ARR (with gradually less content).
