Just played this the other day and I'd have to agree. I had zero prior experience with the series, I know absolutely nothing about it and was completely blown away by the visuals and art direction. It's so melancholic, I loved it. The writing and gameplay were a little meh but the feeling the world gave me kind of made up for it.

The problem with the game is not the controls. Though some level design aspects can be blamed because of them.
You can get good at the controls, but it doesn't stop them from being shit, which also doesn't stop people from saying "git gud" for disliking them.
I beat the game once and returned it. Hated it.
