Squaresoft, just like Square-Enix, had truly horrendous writers. They managed to produce some very nice composers and artists, but their game designers barely knew what they were doing and their script writers were probably 13 or something. Considering they focused on story-centric games, this is what it ended up being like. It's a mess and it makes no sense and when it does it's banalities.
