Also it was released digitally over a month before getting a theatrical release. I can't imagine it had too many screens playing it when it was released.
The latest paranormal activity had the same problem, it had its theatrical release around the same time as its digital release and there's been an argument that the digital release killed its box office.
It had a couple of cool moments but overall wasn't a very good movie.

Why is it so good? I should be bored. Every scene really captures the time period. Some BS side-plots but the rest is GOAT. Those surgical scenes, man.

Well, the Empire DID disband. The First Order is a new organization that emulates the Empire in aesthetic but appears to be fairly different in ideology. JJ has said up and down that Snoke and Kylo Ren are not Sith so we'll see how different they truly are.
The New Republic exists, they're just weak and incompetent and refuse to challenge the First Order. The Resistance is a splinter group that Princess Leia founded to fight the First Order behind enemy lines
