They are incredibly influential, I'll give you that, but they were passed down through the generations and found themselves in book form not because of their artistic value, but because they were inspiring, and as such lived on in bardic lore until someone got around to recording it in a manuscript.
They're the Star Wars of their era. Massively popular, arguably good, but not necessarily the best that their time could offer.
