It is fall 1936 and Nazi Germany has impressed a world still in depression with the Olympics. Hitler is calling for Germans all around the world to return to the Fatherland. We come to a ten year old boy in Texas, grandson of German immigrants. His parents have decided to take up Hitler's call and move to Germany. The boy really doesn't want to go and leave his friends.
January, 1945. The boy, Karl, is now 19 years old and drafted into the German army. He was stationed in France, but the battle of the bulge has him lost and alone in the forest. He still hates being in Germany, being in the Army, and just wants to go back to Texas. He has spent his time in Germany keeping up with American pop culture and writing his friends in Texas.
One night while still lost, cold, starving, and alone, he comes across a dead American soldier. The American has better winter clothes and a pack full of rations. So he makes a fire and camps with the dead American. Changing into the American uniform and going through the dead soldier's things.
Morning and he wakes up to find him self about to be discovered by a company of American soldiers sweeping the forest. He panics and dresses the dead American soldier in his German uniform. The Americans find him and Karl pretends to be the dead guy. That he was separated from his unit in a snow storm and came across and killed the German on the ground.
The american army company takes him in and the continue on fighting their way into German. Karl covers his little slip ups and knowledge of German and Germany, by saying he is a interpreter. Karl hopes that by pretending to be the dead American, he can get home to Texas.

May, 1945. Karl is assigned to help process German soldiers at a temporary POW camp, after the surrender. He has been orders to go back to the states and leave the Army, and on a train going through France. Meanwhile an Army personnel office and intelligence officer have discovered that Karl is not the American soldier he claims to be. The antagonist of the movie is introduced, Johnson, a military police officer. Johnson is tasked with spreading the arrest orders for Karl and arrest of Karl before he reaches the ship in France.
Johnson and Karl are on the same train on the way between Paris and the port of Brest. Karl overhears Johnson and his search for a German soldier disguised as an american. An intense cat and mouse game on the train happens. As Karl avoids Johnson and the other MPs. Karl fights a few of them and tosses them off the moving train with out killing them.
The train arrives in Brest and Karl runs for the port and ship home. Johnson and his last remaining MP see Karl getting on the ship and they board. Karl hides and the ship leaves for NYC. Johnson comes across Karl in an engineering section of the ship and they have a fight. During the fight the transport is struck by a floating wreck of a ship. This causes the place they were fighting to start flooding. Karl has an opening to escape as Johnson is stuck and about the drown. Though Karl turns around and saves Johnson. They reach small compartment which was sealed off by the ship's crew. During this time Karl comes clean to Johnson.
The ship arrives in NYC. Johnson lets Karl go. Grateful for Karl saving his life, Karl's work with the Americans, Karl telling him where to find the American he was posing as, and Johnson being way out of the scope of his orders by getting on the ship.
Karl returns to his grandparents' house in Texas. Johnson's report was that the German jumped overboard rather than be captured.
