The main theme of Snyder's "Batman v Superman" on spiritual dematerialism is not eschatological, but a phenomenological ontology. As his academic hero Heidegger succintly noted, "freedom is the ‘abyss’ of Dasein, its groundless or absent ground". This is essentially the thesis operating in Snyder's films.

Tough to think of similar films, Glazer's previous film Birth maybe, Sexy Beast is great. Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go maybe, beautifully directed sci-fi w/o any of the iconography.
