Why do you think they describe the planes of Hell etc. in the D&D Planar Handbook type books? It's for exactly this kind of purpose.

A GM should have no problem contriving an excuse for the players go actually travel to the Lower Planes. Getting them some kind of permit of safe passage is another story but also not too difficult, particularly for higher-level characters.

Collecting some rare plant, retrieving a lost item, heck even thwarting some nefarious plan are all good reasons for the PCs to go to Hell and not necessarily be opposed by every single creature they meet. There ARE cities in the lower planes, and with the right passes they can be about as accommodating as Drow cities in the Underdark.

Sup /tg/, I'm working on a new setting and magic system and I need some advice or feedback.

>The branches of Magic
There are three general types of magic. Beyond being different methods, each also has a different usage and limitations as to what they can do.

All magic users can tap into any or all of these branches and schools of magical power, but many specialize.

>High Arcanism
Sometimes called 'Classical Magic', it is the most formulaic and well understood branch of magic. Essentially, this power is the same as the power of the Gods, being able to change the world- mutations, transformations, terraforming, bestowing magical powers, etc. These are the powers related to this field, and it includes things like Alchemy, Sacred Metallurgy and Scroll Making.

>Twilight Thaumaturgy
This second branch of magic is based on the idea of being able to reach through the barrier and void between this world and the mirror realm. The mirror realm is not quite the afterlife, but it is essentially the land of emotions parallel to our land of the physical. People visit here when they dream, and everyone has copies and symbols here. This magic also includes the power to summon creatures from this realm, teleportation, as well as evocation of the raw energy created here. Black Fire, Lightning Bolts, Waves of Chilling ice are native to this realm from emotions and the creatures inhabitanting it.

>Witchcraft
The 'lowest' and most pedestrian of all magical arts; it is by far the most common type of magic and is by no means weak. It involves the subtle concepts of symbolism and luck. Magical rituals and crafts allow people to manipulate luck and fate, sometimes to uncanny levels. This magic produces less immediate, overt, or tangible effects but it can make people horribly cursed or lucky, as well as ritually enchanting magical items for specific purposes.

What do you think about this magic system?

>>>46719595 What do you think about this magic system? *What do you think about these magic systems?
Straight out the gate, the biggest issue is that these magic systems are completely disparate.
That's fine from the perspective of suspending disbelief, but it's not aesthetically pleasing.
Roleplay is largely about wish fulfillment, and poor aesthetics are a great way to rain on that parade.

Does /tg/ have any interest in starting a VASSAL wargaming society?

It'd be nice to have some regulars to play the old hex classics with. It's a crying shame to see hundreds of old wargame designs hosted with almost no playerbase

Tyranid meat

So, Tyranids attack an agriworld. They're eventually defeated, but they've consumed all the livestock. On the other hand, there are lots of Tyranid corpses lying around, and the Planetary Governor wants to recoup his losses and figures the average Imperial citizen can't taste the difference anyway.

What would the consequences be of eating Tyranid meat?

With Director Waldrick slain, Dyrus, Darren, and their companions have made an example of the Empire's coastline, compromising a great deal of its territory as their actions inspire further uprising on the coastline. Holmstead and the South Islands might as well be the only Gerxel territories in the Coastal Region.

Unless, of course, the Noban knights and smaller Holmstead resistance forces can manage to wrestle the peaceful seaside city-state out of their hands. Then Coastal is even more up a creek without a paddle, as you, currently Samson, very much hope to be the case.

After Director Waldrick has called Holmstead-occupying Gerxel warriors to Darton, Lady Hera, not yet at the position of Director that Waldrick's demise would thrust upon her, calls upon the town to deliver a short speech about how, even with their numbers reduced, any who hope to challenge this peace in Holmstead will be crushed with the full force of the Gerxel Empire imbuing her and her every underling. "Anticipating this day," Hera says, "I have also called upon an old friend of mine, a heroine of the archipelago's campaign and an overseer of the islands."

The friend, so Hera calls her, is a Hero by the name of Helen, big and blonde like many an islander, who fought with her and Director Waldrick taking the islands. Normally, she' stationed on a prison island, Fort Dalshin, but her might, military history, and the dozen soldiers she was granted command of are still expected to partially make up for lost hands.

"I'm, uh..." Helen starts, rubbing the back of her head, "not very good at public speaking, to be honest..." Stopping herself from saying much more self-deprecating stuff, she draws a Steel Sword and brandishes it, posing alongside Hera and her axe. "So I'll just let my strength speak for me! It's kept the peace on a prison island, so Hera and I won't let it disturb your lives here!"

Recently: You and Robin began your double battle against Robert, the fire master of the Elite Four.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear vote winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever! This is not a video game.

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

"YOU IMBECILES!" A voice filled with burning fury and rage growled from within a wall of smoke, barely forming a recognizable humanoid silhouette.

The five knights wince, and looked away, but did not rise from their knees as they demon screamed like a blender filled with knife blades and pebbles.

"YOU'VE DIDN'T EVEN THINK TO GO BACK WHEN SHE DIDN'T SHOW FOR TWO ENTIRE WEEKS!" It growls, the air around it waving and bending with heat "INSTEAD OF GOING BACK TO CHECK HER PROGRESS OR TRY TO STOP IT, YOU SIMPLY SAT ON A FEW LIFELESS ROCKS, WASTING TIME AND PUSHING US CLOSER TO OUR DEADLINE!"

None of the knights speak as the demon continues to rage, the sand around him turning to glass as he continues to scream and roar, and generally thrash about in a temper tantrum.

"I'd kill you all" the mist of smoke says, suddenly calm, as the heat vanishes in an instant, leaving only a deathly cold in its place "But...I still need you, to be bluntly honest"

I groan, slowly opening my eyes to see Blue pushing her fist down onto my stomach, with bandages wrapped around her arm to keep her arm's blade in place. Sitting up, with my wings still wrapped around me as I sleepily try to push the little hiver away. She just leaps away from me, giggling as she vanishes into the dim lights of the underground room.

"Hehe" I hear Minor say from somewhere "I tried to stop her but, well I thought it was too cute to stop"

I flop back down in my cocoon like bed, sighing heavily as I rub my eyes and try to wake up a bit.

You are Janrael, Angel Soulborn, member of the adventurers club, and apprentice wizard.

You are perched on the top of a roof, looking down at an armoured figure destroying zombies and skeletons. So that's Lord Tamulus, the Paladin.

“We'll fight him at a distance” you say to Calluna, Phaysis and Nataline “I can fly, Calluna can go up and down walls easily and Phaysis can run fast – Nataline I want you on Phaysis, I bet that guy can take out any of us easily.”

Nataline says “Really, you mean I get-”

“Don't say it!” Phaysis warns her.

“-ride Philly?” Nataline finishes with a wink, Phaysis glares at you, then her “I hate that name” she mutters. Nataline puts and arm around her, laughing, finally Phaysis smiles too.

With your plan ready, you watch the others climb down off the roof as you take to the air, circling overhead until the others are ready. Once they are in position you prepare to act.

All of you stand around a map table with Griselda. She points out the fact that now, “Our positions have been reversed. So we’re starting on Gagetown’s side, and they’re starting on ours from last time. Now, I fully suspect they’re going to bring out the maximum number of tanks allowed. And that means we’re probably going to face self-propelled artillery.”

“Is that bad?” asks Iris.

“Bad? Artillery was one of the major advantages of that midget Napoleon,” says Suvorov. “And he almost conquered Europe with it.”

“Riiiight…” Griselda continues on. “We can’t risk going off-road this time. I hate to be blunt, but none of you have drivers capable of overcoming the tank’s overall weakness to mud, except for the Churchill. But I don’t trust sending heavy tanks alone, especially one as important as the Churchill which today is our flag tank.”

“We will do our best,” says Iris. “As is expected of a lady.”

“Right.” You fold your arms. “So what then?”

“We force ourselves up the road, all five of us in a scattered formation, and hopefully we can make a run on their flag tank,” says Griselda. That’s… honestly not the best plan. But against self-propelled artillery on terrain this difficult to cross? It’s probably the best she could come up with. You won’t argue it for now. “Any questions?” Silence. “Well, alright then.” She checks her watch. “You all got some hours before the match starts. Try and have some fun but be at the Rally Point on time.”

No need to tell you twice. What to do then?

Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You returned from your meeting with the High Elves to the South-East, and you soon learned that Pernites have been stirring trouble. They had taken Spot hostage, and sent an emissary to mock you. You interrogated the emissary, learning that she was the daughter of Verus, a paladin of good standing with the Pernite nation, and much about the combat capabilities of the new Pernite army. You sent Lathrien to liberate the gnolls, a task he was successful at, but resulted in his capture. In your attempt to free him, you met with Verus, exchanged Lathrien for his daughter, and even arranged talks with the Prophet of Pern. You went to the Pernite camp, and were instructed to wait for the arrival of the Prophet in a tent, Verus watching over you.

The Cast:

Vlad Tepish: You, a necromancer of great power, a cunning diplomat and tactician. You have achieved your goal of immortality by learning to shapeshift into a great black dragon.

Melandie: An experienced elven huntress, scout and berserker, her perception is without peer. She still has significant anger issues, but is less likely to express them through wanton murder than in her early youth.

Verus: A paladin of Pern, and an overall reasonable fellow. You do not know much about the man, excepting that he has shown much integrity and reason for a faithful follower of Pern.

Joan: A junior priest of Pern, he has nonetheless managed to raise to a rank of military leadership of this campaign. You know little of the man, but something in his manner was memorable to you.

Housekeeping:

I have decided that Feral Necromancer Quest shall conclude soon, likely with the fortieth installment. I shall resume running quests, but Vlad's story is coming to a close.

My life makes some little sense for the first time in months, and so it is much more likely that I will be able to keep a regular posting schedule.

As you would expect, your time in the Pernite camp feels long and slow. You have nothing but staring at the white canvas of the tent wall and talking to your two companions to pass your time. Your two companions, one of which is not certain that you are not a monster deserving of extermination, and the other seems to be always angry, all the time.

For the first few hours you merely rest. You have been travelling hard, with no sleep for several days now, so a little rest is welcome. You make sure to send a dream to Bathory, so that she knows not to worry, and then you retire to sleep for a while. Not even four hours have passed when you start awake and soon after grow restless from the lack of anything much to do.

You are waiting for the Prophet of Pern. And impressive title, but both in history and in your experience, men with impressive titles often aren't. You know you are ready to face a champion of the god of Light, whether it be on the battlefield or at the negotiating table, but your lack of nervousness only serves to make the time flow more slowly.

>Talk to Melandie. You haven't spoken much for a few years, you being busy with government and family matters, her with- well, you do not even really know how she has been keeping herself busy.
>Talk to Verus. The paladin is your most likely inside ally with the Pernites, and talking to him has been entertaining the few times you've had the chance.
>Invite Verus in and pass time chatting with the both of them. It is less likely you will be able to do anything useful in a casual chat, but it is sure to help you pass the time.
>Leave your body behind and astrally explore the Pernite camp.
